Norris broke 'rule number one' with Piastri collision
MONTREAL, June 15 (Reuters) - Lando Norris apologised to McLaren and his championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri on Sunday for a Canadian Grand Prix collision he said broke the first rule of racing.
The Briton hit the back of Piastri's car as he tried to overtake three laps from the end, a misjudgement that put Norris out of the race and damaged the Australian's car, albeit without consequence for him.
Piastri finished fourth and extended his Formula One lead over Norris to 22 points.
"Rule number one is to not make a contact with your teammate, and that's what I did," Norris told reporters at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
"McLaren is my family... so when I let them down like this and make a fool of myself like I did today, I have a lot of regret. I'm not proud of myself, I feel bad and I've let down the team.
"He (Piastri) is not going to be happy altogether with what happened. I wouldn't be either if it was the other way around, so I owe him an apology for such a risk... Oscar did nothing wrong here, just myself."
Piastri said Norris had apologised, he appreciated the gesture and there was no bad feeling between them.
"Lando is a very good guy and it is in his character and personality to say what he thinks, even if that is detrimental to himself," added the Australian.
"This is a great quality for Lando. It is good for the team going forward that we can have these conversations and race like this and have things not go the way we want and get through them."
Team boss Andrea Stella said it had been an accident waiting to happen and one the team had expected to deal with at some point.
"We said a few times that it wasn't a matter of if, it was more a matter of when," said the Italian. "And the 'when' is Canada 2025."
Stella said it had been the result of a simple misjudgement, a miscalculation, and a part of racing even if the team never wanted to see their cars collide.
He praised Norris for taking responsibility and apologising to him and to the team and while there would be further conversations, he could count on McLaren's full support.
"It's important the way we respond and we react to these situations," he added. "This will only make us stronger in terms of our internal competition and in terms of the way we go racing.
"We act based on principles and based on principles there should be no contact between two McLarens... luckily there was no double penalty with the points lost for the other car, which had no responsibility in this contact."

The following day, he took a selfie with polesitter Lewis Hamilton's car and in the race the Mercedes man lost the lead before the first corner and finished fourth. In Canada, Rosberg avoided taking a picture of any cars but instead posted a selfie of himself on the start grid… in the exact spot that Norris and Piastri collided – something fans immediately noticed. 'The curse of Nico Rosberg lives on,' one Reddit user stated, while another added: 'Seriously this has to be studied. There's no way there can be this much coincidence.' 'His powers are too dangerous to go unchecked. How can we harness this power?' one fan jokingly asked. 'Bro cursed the guy right there,' was one comment on Instagram, while another read: 'I'm back from lap 67. BRO DID CURSE TURN 1.' Norris instantly accepted full responsibility for the collision, which could have major ramifications on the title race, saying: 'I didn't expect to pass Oscar on the outside into Turn One. It's just, I should never have gone for it, I guess is my complete hindsight thing. 'I thought he was starting to drift a little bit to the right, so I thought I had a small opportunity to go to the left. But it was way too much risk, especially on my team-mate. 'So, happy nothing happened to him. I paid the price for my mistake. 'Our rule number one is to not make contact with your team-mate and it's what I did. McLaren is my family. I race for them, you know, every single weekend. 'I try and do well for them, more than I often try and do well for myself. So, when I let them down like this and when I make a fool of myself in a moment like today, yeah, I have a lot of regret. 'I've let down the team. So, that's going to stay with me for a little while. But at the same time, part of moving on is trying to put it behind you and crack on with the next weekend.' Rosberg, who has previously acknowledged the curse's existence, is fearful that the mistakes are building up for Norris, telling Sky Sports: 'Lando did an amazing first lunge into the hairpin, that was beautiful. As George Russell delivered a faultless drive to win from pole position ahead of Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, Norris banged into the back of Piastri as they duelled for fourth place with three laps to go. The race ended behind the safety car with Kimi Antonelli taking third place – his first podium in Formula One – to complete a strong afternoon for Mercedes. Piastri was able to continue to cross the line in fourth and extend his championship lead from 10 points to 22. Following their collision at the last round in Spain, all eyes were on pole-sitter Russell and second-placed Verstappen at the start in Montreal. Even Verstappen, not adverse to a bold move, was unable to do anything to challenge Russell and the Mercedes man led. Music to the ears of Norris, who made two mistakes in qualifying to start the 10th round of the campaign four places behind his title rival. Norris was on the move on lap 11 to take Fernando Alonso on the back straight for sixth before sailing clear of Lewis Hamilton four laps later. Hamilton endured another poor afternoon after he sustained damage to his Ferrari after he hit a groundhog before taking the chequered flag in sixth. Advertisement Norris started on the hard tyre compound which allowed him to run longer in the race and he assumed the lead on lap 16. 'We need one of those amazing races from you,' said his engineer, Will Joseph. Norris relinquished the lead on lap 29 when he eventually stopped. His second stint on the medium tyres lasted only 16 laps and he when he rejoined the track after his second stop, Piastri was 4.2 seconds up the road. With 11 laps to go, Norris had reduced the deficit to less than a second, and after a few nibbles, he launched his McLaren underneath Piastri at the hairpin. Russell. Verstappen. Piastri held the inside line ahead of Norris to take back the position. Advertisement Norris sensed another opportunity on the run down to the first corner but he thudded into his team-mate to deal a blow to his championship hopes. Russell's win, his first since Las Vegas in November, takes him to within 62 points of Piastri. 'It is amazing to be back on the top step,' Russell said. 'We took the victory following an incredible pole lap (on Saturday).'
