Premier: DBKU, MBKS must embrace digital economy vision to stay relevant
KUCHING (Aug 1): Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) must align their policies and operations with Sarawak's digital economy vision.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed local authorities must evolve in line with rapid technological advancements.
'I urge DBKU and MBKS to embrace this aspiration so they remain significant and relevant to the digital needs of the people.
'They must transform their engagement and public perception, including in terms of policy, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation,' he in a speech for the 37th Kuching City Day celebration at Pangkalan Sapi, Petra Jaya today.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas delivered the speech for the celebration themed 'Smart City of Unity, Embracing A Sustainable Future'.
Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak is positioning itself as a key digital economy player in the region, with the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 (SDE 2030) laying the groundwork for inclusive, responsible, and sustainable socioeconomic growth.
'To achieve this goal, the Sarawak government launched the SDE 2030, which is a key component of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). It aims to shift the entire economy and society from a conventional economy to a technology-driven sustainable economy,' he said.
He said the plan focuses on five strategic pillars — economic growth priorities, digital business development, public sector and services transformation, frontier technology adoption, and strengthening digital economy fundamentals including governance, cybersecurity, talent development, digital skills, research, and entrepreneurship.
He said the government places strong emphasis on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and 5G to boost productivity, improve efficiency, drive innovation, and enhance quality of life in Sarawak.
Highlighting the importance of city councils in this transformation, Abang Johari said DBKU and MBKS can play a vital role in implementing the state's Sustainability Blueprint 2030.
'On May 29, we launched the Sustainability Blueprint 2030, which outlines 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies, and 111 actionable plans to drive Sarawak's transition to a green and low-carbon economy.
'Sarawak is determined to lead Malaysia and the region in climate action and sustainable development. This is not Sarawak's journey as this is our contribution to the future generations.
'As for DBKU and MBKS, both of the cities can play a critical role in implementing the Sarawak Sustainable Blueprint 2030 by aligning the policies, urban planning and community programmes. This blueprint may also be integrated into Local Development Plans, Low-Carbon Initiatives in Urban Areas, Waste and Water Management Innovations, Community Education and Engagement, Nature-Based and Carbon Projects, Green Economy and Innovation, and Digital and Smart City,' he said.
Abang Johari also underscored the importance of community involvement in local council initiatives, saying citizens have a role in shaping their surroundings.
'We should participate in local council events, provide feedback, and support the local authority agenda. By doing so, we help shape the future of our neighbourhoods.
'Local authorities are the backbone of a well-functioning community. Without them, our towns and cities would not run smoothly. Let us appreciate their efforts and work hand-in-hand with them to create a better living environment for everyone,' he added.
The Premier also congratulated Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Hilmy Othman and Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng for their leadership, and thanked all DBKU and MBKS staff for their dedication towards making Kuching a liveable and loveable city.
He also paid tribute to former mayors whose leadership contributed to the city's progress: Datuk Song Swee Guan, Datuk Chan Seng Khai, Datuk Chong Ted Tsiung, Datuk James Chan, Datu Dr Yusoff Hanifah, Datu Awang Ehsan Joini, Datuk Madehi Kolek, Datu Abdul Hamid Yusof, Datuk Abang Atei, Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, and Datu Junaidi Reduan. 'Riseap envisions a future where traditional Islamic values are amplified through smart technology, and where preachers are digitally empowered while maintaining a strong identity,' he said. He was opening the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (Riseap) International Youth Leadership Training 2025 at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Saturday. The ceremony was graced by Governor Tun Musa Aman, while Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was represented by Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. Abang Johari, who is also Riseap President, said the event was a continuation of the International Da'i Training held in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year in collaboration with the International Da'wah Institute Perkim Kuala Lumpur (IDIPKL) and the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim). He said the week-long course would equip participants with the knowledge, values and practical skills required to meet the challenges of contemporary da'wah (Islamic outreach) and leadership. Some 22 youth representatives from 13 countries are attending, including Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Samoa. Tracing the history of Riseap, Abang Johari noted that it was founded on Nov 11, 1980 by first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, with the vision of uniting Muslim minorities across East Asia and the Pacific. From its 17 founding members, Riseap has now grown to include 52 organisations from 24 countries and territories, making it a vital regional platform for cooperation, solidarity and youth development. Abang Johari said Riseap has always championed unity (ukhuwah), empowerment and Islamic education, while also encouraging the use of Islamic social finance instruments such as Baitulmal and Waqf to support community growth and self-reliance. He stressed that one of Riseap's top priorities was the nurturing of young representatives who are spiritually grounded, socially responsible and globally aware. Abang Johari also encouraged member bodies to continue refining Islamic education curricula in ways that are suited to their own communities, emphasising inclusivity and collaboration. He said the programme in Sabah serves as a platform for delegates to exchange ideas, strengthen bonds of friendship and build mutual understanding between Islamic non-governmental organisations and other religious groups. Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari added to Sarawak tourism calendar from 2026
MUKAH: The Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari will be officially included in Sarawak's tourism calendar starting next year. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this move aims to position the event as a major attraction for international anglers. He highlighted the event's role in strengthening Tanjung Manis' contribution to the state's second wave of economic development. 'Recognition at the state level will enable more structured planning and at the same time allow international participants to prepare earlier,' he said. Abang Johari spoke at the closing ceremony of the Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari at the Tanjung Manis Express Terminal. He noted that fishing, golf, and marathons could elevate Tanjung Manis' global profile. The state government has invested RM70 million in artificial reefs from Telok Melano to Lawas. These reefs aim to boost fish breeding and protect local waters from foreign trawlers. Abang Johari stressed the need for stricter enforcement and Sarawak Coast Guard support to safeguard marine resources. Tanjung Manis will be a key focus in Sarawak's second-wave development, integrating food security, tourism, and carbon economy initiatives. Plans include expanding the local airport to accommodate larger aircraft. Belawai will be developed as a coastal tourism hub with hotels, homestays, and a golf course. Ecotourism will also be strengthened to attract more visitors. From next year, AirBorneo will operate flights bringing tourists from Korea and Japan. This is expected to boost the local economy through food, cultural, and nature-based tourism. Strategic Collaboration To Develop Abandoned Land For Rice Planting
MUKAH, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Strategic collaboration between the private sector and local landowners can be an effective model for developing idle land for commercial padi cultivation that provides a win-win situation for both parties, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The approach, he said, is not only able to generate consistent income for landowners, but also allows cultivation to be carried out in a modern and large-scale manner. "Otherwise, the land will lie idle due to the high cost of cultivating it by the residents themselves. With the presence of the private sector, cultivation can be carried out in a modern approach using machinery and this creates economies of scale," he explained. He told reporters after visiting the Community Padi Cultivation Project undertaken by the Kuala Rajang Islamic Welfare Trust and Padihead Sdn Bhd at Ta Ann Padihead Padi Farm, in Tanjung Manis today. According to Abang Johari, private companies will make investments by providing modern machinery and technology to cultivate the land owned by the residents. Abang Johari said the use of machinery not only speeds up the padi planting process, which is within 50 minutes per hectare, but is also able to increase yields to three seasons a year. The project in Tanjung Manis, which is being developed on an area of 800 hectares, is expected to be able to produce about four tonnes per hectare for two planting seasons a year. He said the same model has great potential to be expanded to other areas, including Kuala Rajang, which has a potential area of 260 hectares. 'If we can plant 14,000 hectares throughout Sarawak, rice production can reach about 240,000 metric tonnes, enough for domestic consumption. If the area is increased by another 14,000 hectares, the amount can be doubled to 480,000 metric tonnes, of which the surplus can be exported,' he said.
