Netflix star warns his new period drama will ‘wake people up'

Daily Mirror7 hours ago

A beloved British star has previewed his next role in a scandalous period drama hitting screens this week
Actor James Purefoy believes his new series will strike a chord with the current political landscape despite being set nearly 100 years ago.
The British star, recently best known for portraying Remi Milburn in Netflix 's hit comedy-drama Sex Education, takes on a crucial role in U and U&Drama's Outrageous, premiering later this week.

Based on the life of Nancy Mitford, Bridgerton star Bessie Carter steps into the role of the iconic writer during her family's rise to notoriety in the 1930s.

With the Second World War looming, Nancy's relationship with her sisters begins to fracture when they start to develop radically opposed political views.
When their father, David Freeman-Mitford (played by Purefoy), known to the girls as 'Farve', is forced to tighten his belt, some of his daughters begin to rub shoulders with British Fascists, believing them to be the answer to the country's growing financial woes.
Speaking exclusively to Reach at Outrageous' London premiere, Purefoy admitted: 'I think, because of the times we live in, I'm not sure how outrageous it is.
'Because I think everybody's quite used to what's going on in terms of very polarised politics, populist leaders doing unbelievably outrageous things.
'So, it's outrageous in the sense of, that's kind of where it started.'

Written by Sarah Williams, Outrageous marks itself out from other period dramas from the first episode as it's not afraid to delve into the seedier corners of aristocratic life in the 20th Century.
While Nancy hones her talents as a writer, her sisters Diana (Joanna Vanderham) and Unity (Shannon Watson) became more involved in the rise of fascism in the UK, much in the same way families have been splintered by politics in recent years.

'Sometimes it takes a show to come along to show us where we are now by looking through the lens of us now from 1933,' Purefoy continued.
'And I think people are going to find that fascinating, they're going to go 'Oh my God, this really is like where we are now'.
'What's, for me, outrageous, is that those people then didn't have the benefit of hindsight. Fascism, the logical conclusion, the only way it ends up, is with the industrial slaughter of millions of people.

'They didn't know that then. But those who flirt with fascism, the iconography, the language, the words of fascism now, they know where it ends up. And they should be very careful playing with that fire.'
The actor concluded by issuing a warning to those planning on watching the series that they might have their viewpoints challenged.
'Perhaps, hopefully it will wake people up to go, 'Woah, that's not a road we want to go down again!'' he says.

Touching on his role within the series, Purefoy explained that much of his character was lifted from Uncle Matthew, a prominent figure in Nancy Mitford's works believed to be heavily based on her own father.
'He's an interesting story, Farve,' Purefoy says. 'Uncle Matthew is a very boisterous, slightly cartoonish figure who's brutal with his children.

'And, yes, Farve is pretty brutal with his children but I find him quite a sad figure. Because he pretty much loses everything as the show goes on.
'And he's just not equipped for the modern world at all. He's lost a lot of money [during] the Wall Street Crash and that's not coming back fast enough.
'I find him a really, deeply upsetting man in a lot of ways because he's someone who's quite lost in the modern world. He's just not equipped for it.'
U's latest venture is an essential watch for fans of Downton Abbey and other period dramas, so make sure this scandalous and gripping new series is on your radar this week.
Outrageous premieres Thursday, 19th June on U, U&Drama and BritBox.

Love Island feud breaks out as Meg's savage row with Malisha splits the villa – forcing Alima to step in

LOVE Island has been split following Meg Moore's brutal row with bombshell Malisha Jordan. Meg lashed out at Malisha after she asked Dejon Noel Williams to go for a chat in The Hideaway. 7 7 7 Malisha was branded "disrespectful" by furious Meg, who is coupled up with Dejon, and they ended up in a slanging match. During the row, Malisha told Meg to "grow up" and called her an "idiot, to which Megan Forte Clark snapped back. In tonight's episode, Malisha was shown crying following her argument with Meg as she raced back inside the villa. Hot on her heels was Almia Gagio who was quick to comfort her. Then, creating a new and obvious division, Almia stormed outside to confront Meg and the other girls for speaking to Malisha the way they did. Speaking to Megan FC, she said: "That was not nice to see all the shouting." Megan replied: "She called Meg and idiot so I piped in." Meg then attempted to validate her fury by explaining to Alima that she felt Malisha was "disrespectful" for asking Dejon to The Hideaway. "I didn't even want to argue with her," Meg claimed. But Alisha told her: "I know it's not nice to see your boy getting pulled up left, right and centre but at the same time, we can be nice to boys and we can be nice to the girls as well." Love Island fans slam Meg for 'trying to be iconic' as she furiously confronts rival and villa descends into chaos Meg replied: "I completely agree but coming in here with the energy she had last night and sat with Dejon having just had a date with him, starting to argue with the girl he's in a couple with and shouting your mouth off at me and calling me an idiot, that's not a good impression." Standing firm, Alima said: "It's more like, let's try and be nicer to people because that was crazy to watch." Shakira Khan, who had been listening to Meg and Alima, then came over to fight Malisha's corner as well. "I genuinely don't think she was being disrespectful going to The Hideaway, it's no different to The Terrace." Love Island fans have heaped their praise on Alima and Shakira for standing up for Malisha. Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: "Alima was so sweet for checking the girls and Shakira backed it." Another added: "I love girls like Alima and Shakira. all the others are following Meg for what?" And a third said: "Love that Alima went to Meg straight after comforting Malisha and told her that she was in the wrong and even told Megan she was wrong for adding her 2 cents. Also love that Shakira went in to back Malisha." 7 7 7 7

Lily Allen breaks her silence after being spotted on a 'date' with James Norton

Lily Allen has returned to social media after she was spotted looking cosy with actor James Norton, with the pair said to be 'enjoying each other's company' over the weekend Singer Lily Allen has posted on social media for the first time since being spotted looking cosy with British actor James Norton. The mum-of-two, whose marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour ended earlier this year, looked happier than ever as she spent some time with the Happy Valley actor over the weekend. Lily, 40, and James, 39, were spotted enjoying each other's company over the weekend, sparking rumours of a budding romance. The Smile hitmaker looked radiant in a black mini skirt and white t-Shirt as she spent time with James at the Lido Festival in East London on Saturday. ‌ James, who recently became single after parting ways with his model girlfriend, is also rumoured to be on Raya, where he has reportedly matched with Lily. The two were spotted at the festival, opting out of the VIP section to enjoy acts like Charli XCX among the crowd with cans on non-alcoholic beer. ‌ At one point, Lily was seen leaning into James, and the two appeared to be at ease with each other, with James visibly giggling at her antics. Festival-goers were reportedly doing double takes upon spotting the pair together as they sipped on alcohol-free beverages. Following the snaps circulating online, Lily returned to social media on Monday afternoon - but failed to address the rumours she has a new man in her life. The singer-turned-actress instead used her Instagram Stories to promote the latest instalment of her BBC podcast series with Miquita Oliver, Miss Me? Earlier in the day, Instagram's very own Gossip Girl DeuxMoi shared a message from a fan that was at the Chari xcx afterparty that claimed "Lily Allen [was] getting very cosy with James Norton". "Good for Lily especially after that drama with David," one Instagram user penned in the comment section, with another adding: "Alright Lily. What a rebound." ‌ Lily admitted she struggled in the wake of her split from American actor David after the former couple called it quits in December, ending their four-year marriage. Rumours swirled earlier this year that David had been unfaithful during their marriage, with claims of him being seen on a celebrity dating app while still wed to Lily. David has yet to respond to the allegations of infidelity or using a dating app during his marriage. In a candid admission during a live podcast recording at the Hackney Empire in London back in March, Lily reflected on the split and confessed to the audience, "I am not over it." ‌ She further revealed, "I am sort of running away. Maybe I will have a nervous breakdown." Meanwhile, David has also opened up about his personal struggles, admitting to having let himself go "physically and emotionally." His comments came shortly after he confirmed the split by appearing without his wedding ring on the red carpet at the Thunderbolts premiere. When questioned about the split, David initially responded with a mere "Oh boy," but later explained his decision to remain tight-lipped, citing his desire to protect the people involved and the reality of his life. In an interview with GQ Magazine, David expressed his reluctance to engage with the surrounding hype, which he believed was based on "hysterical hyperbole."

In 2012, a teenage girl wanted to invite some friends to her sixteenth birthday party in her hometown of Haren, Groningen, Netherlands. She created an event on Facebook, intending for it to be a private gathering. However, she accidentally set the invitation to public, meaning anyone could see it and RSVP. What happened next was completely unexpected and soon became a cautionary tale about the power and unpredictability of social media. read more on netflix NETFLIX & CULL Netflix reveal huge list of movies and TV shows being axed next month Like in the Hollywood movie Project X — released just months earlier, depicting a wild, out-of-control high school party — Dutch teenagers began to share and spread the Facebook event. In the film, the party quickly spirals into chaos, with hundreds of people showing up, leading to excessive drinking, drug use, property destruction, violence and a full-scale police intervention. It ends with the main characters facing serious consequences, including legal trouble and financial ruin due to the damages caused. Project X was reportedly loosely inspired by a real-life event in 2008 in Melbourne, Australia, where a teenager threw a massive party while his parents were away. He promoted it on social media and over 500 people attended, resulting in property damage and police involvement. Back in Haren in 2012, the Facebook invite for the birthday party quickly went viral, with thousands of people RSVPing. Despite being warned about the potential scale of the gathering, local authorities underestimated how big the event would become and failed to prepare adequate security or crowd control measures. When the day of the party arrived, a massive crowd descended on the small town. 3 A massive crowd turned up at the supposedly private party Credit: Alamy The situation rapidly escalated from a harmless gathering to a full-blown riot. There was widespread disorder, vandalism, looting and clashes with police. The town of Haren suffered major property damage and the event made headlines across the Netherlands and beyond. Trainwreck: The Real Project X An episode of Netflix's Trainwrecked documents this extraordinary sequence of events. Using interviews, archival footage and social media posts, it pieces together how a simple Facebook mistake led to total chaos. It also examines the role of the Project X movie in inspiring teens to attend the party — blurring the line between fiction and reality. Episodes of Trainwreck started dropping on Netflix on June 10, 2025, with The Real Project X available for streaming from July 8.
