What would success be for Killie this season?

Manager Stuart Kettlewell believes success can be measured in three ways as he prepares for his first Premiership game in charge of Kilmarnock on already topped their League Cup group, with a second-round tie against Dundee United to come in August, the former Motherwell and Ross County boss is clear on what a positive season looks like for the Rugby Park side, who host Livingston in the season opener."Your league position, a cup run and the potential of selling a football player," he explained."We talk about ways to make football clubs grow and earn money and for the wheel to keep turning. There are only three ways that that can happen."From a manager's perspective, your league position, being as high as it possibly can be, a cup run and that player development to sell a player are the three goals, that's the main ones."Kettlewell was reluctant to pinpoint specific aims in terms of reaching the top six or initially focussing on Premiership safety this term, but did suggest the former may be the initial goal."It's safe to say that we have lofty aspirations of where we want to be," he said."As long as my players and the staff and everybody at the football club understands what that looks like, what success is, what failure looks like, then that's really all I'm concerned about. Sometimes those goals can shift as well."Sometimes it's a scenario where you do that a little bit better and you think that you can push boundaries even further than what might be expected. "I think it's safe to say that the goals that we all set will be difficult to obtain, but we think also achievable."

Celtic want 'to come out blocks strong' in title defence

Right-back Alistair Johnston says Celtic want another fast start to the season as the champions strive to retain the Premiership Rodgers' side kicked off last term with seven successive league wins and only dropped four points in their opening 16 games as they charged clear at the kick off the new campaign at home to St Mirren on Sunday and will find out their Champions League play-off opponents the following day."Three points count now as much as they do at the end of the season," Canada international Johnston told Celtic TV."When we look back at last season, we had a good start and that made a difference come the end of the season."If you do your work early you can take a lot of pressure off, especially when the season gets really busy in the winter."We know how important it is to come out of the blocks strong, and this year we have Champions League qualifiers as well, so it's a big month for us from the get-go."Johnston says unfurling the league flag this weekend will give Celtic's new signings "an understanding of what the minimum requirements are at this club".He added: "It's also motivation from day one because we want to do that again. You're expected to win trophies and that's what it's all about."

Goodwin calls for calmer & sharper United

Jim Goodwin wants to see a sharper and calmer Dundee United tonight as they bid to avoid a European shock in lead UNA Strassen 1-0 from the home leg of the Conference League second-round qualifier and boss Goodwin said: "I thought they finished the game strongly at Tannadice."I don't know whether there was a little bit of nervousness and anxiety creeping in from our players."We discussed that after the game. We need to be a little bit calmer in those situations and not be slashing at things as much and try and get a bit more control."But they didn't catch us by surprise the other night. We prepared for a difficult game. I think they're a really well-coached team. They've got some really good, experienced players."The pleasing aspect of last week was we limited them to only two shots on target. We had eight or nine shots on target and should have taken at least another two or three of those good opportunities. We've tried to work on that during the week and hopefully that will show in the game."Defender Vicko Sevelj is wary of Strassen's quality but convinced United will advance."We learned are really composed on the ball and can play good football," said the Croat."It will be a very tough game but we'll give everything for this shirt and I think we'll go through. That's a big achievement for us."
