All-Star pitcher Jacob deGrom to miss scheduled start for Texas Rangers due to shoulder fatigue

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Texas Rangers are going to skip Jacob deGrom's scheduled start this week because of shoulder fatigue, but the club said it is merely managing his workload and he is not expected to spend time on the injured list.
The five-time All-Star, who was supposed to start Wednesday night in Kansas City, was examined in Texas by Dr. Keith Meister, and the checks came back clean. That means deGrom could make his next start as soon as next week.
The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has pitched 140 1/3 innings across 24 starts this season, going 10-5 with a 2.76 ERA. That is by far the most innings deGrom has thrown since 2019, when he eclipsed 200 for a third consecutive year with the New York Mets.
The right-hander missed most of the 2022 season with a stress reaction in his shoulder. He underwent his second Tommy John surgery the following year, and made it back in time to make three brief starts last September.

Adli becomes latest player to leave Leverkusen after joining Bournemouth

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Morocco winger Amine Adli became the latest player to leave Bayer Leverkusen after completing a move to Bournemouth on Thursday. Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Lukas Hradecky have also left this summer, from the team that went undefeated in domestic competitions in winning the Bundesliga and German Cup in the 2023-24 campaign but didn't capture a trophy last season. According to a BBC report, the transfer fee was 29 million euros ($33.8 million). The 25-year-old Adli was often used as an impact substitute in the league for Leverkusen, where he scored 23 goals in 143 competitive games, but typically started cup games. Adli joined Bournemouth on a deal until 2028 and said of his four-year spell at Leverkusen: 'The special time in this club has shaped me as an athlete and as a person. I will never forget them.' Leverkusen has a new coach this season in Erik ten Hag, who has replaced Xabi Alonso. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP soccer:

Australian Will Genia retires from rugby after a 110-test career that included 3 World Cups

SYDNEY (AP) — Three-time Rugby World Cup player and 110-test Australian veteran Will Genia announced his retirement from the sport on Thursday at the age of 37. Genia confirmed his retirement on his Instagram page, telling followers he will transition into the role of skills coach at Japanese rugby side Kintetsu with long-time teammate Quade Cooper. Genia will finish his career as the seventh most-capped Wallaby. In November 2018, he became the 10th Australian, and the second scrumhalf after George Gregan, to reach 100 tests when he ran out against England at Twickenham. He finishes his career with a Super Rugby title, a Tri-Nations title, a Rugby Championship title and a European Rugby Challenge title with Stade Français, as well as making the 2015 Rugby World Cup final. 'From walking in to Ballymore at the end of 2006 as a kid, to travelling the world chasing a ball, it has been more than I ever thought it would be, so much so that it feels like a dream is all it should be,' Genia wrote. Cooper was one of the first to pay credit to his long-time playing partner. 'What a ride my brother. Who would have guessed way back then,' Cooper responded on Genia's Instagram page. 'It's funny because we always seemed to find each other through changes in coaches (who I mostly clashed with) to countries, teams and now the other side. It's been a pleasure and grateful to have done it with you.' ___ AP rugby:
