Microsoft's Copilot Will Browse the Web With You in New Update

(Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. is embedding the Copilot AI assistant deeper into its browser, betting that users will find the service helpful when sorting through information and navigating the web. Can This Bridge Ease the Troubled US-Canadian Relationship? Budapest's Most Historic Site Gets a Controversial Rebuild Trump Administration Sues NYC Over Sanctuary City Policy The new Copilot Mode for Microsoft Edge was announced on Monday, with the company characterizing it as an experiment. When the feature is enabled, opening a new browser tab will bring together Microsoft's AI assistant and web search in a single text box. Copilot will be able to read information across browser tabs. That could mean helping you evaluate a set of hotel-room options, say, or finding and resuming previous browsing sessions. The software, which will be able to respond to spoken instructions, also can pull out information from web pages, including cutting through the ads and backstory on a recipe to bring up ingredients and step-by-step instructions. The move is part of a broader shift, with AI tools supplanting traditional web features. Chatbots have already become a substitute for web search, and many technologists say such products are likely to start replacing browsers as the default way some people navigate the internet. Alphabet Inc.'s Google has also worked to embed its Gemini assistant into the Chrome browser. Earlier this year, the company added a so-called AI Mode to web search. 'We're witnessing a turning point in how we interact with the web,' Sean Lyndersay, a Microsoft vice president who leads Edge product development, said in a blog post. Edge users could previously summon a more limited Copilot by clicking on the omnipresent pinkish-blue swirl logo at the top of the browser. The new Copilot Mode will require customers to opt in, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said. It can be disabled in Edge's browser settings. Chrome gives you another reason to use it for online shopping

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google has announced a new Chrome feature that allows users to easily gain insights into a store's reputation and product quality. The tool provides an AI-generated summary that pulls data from Google Shopping and other review sites. The feature is limited to users in the US. Even if you're a prolific online shopper, it can be difficult to figure out exactly which stores you should and shouldn't trust. One way to do this is to check the store's reviews on Google to see what other customers have to say about it. Luckily, Google is now making this easier to do, so you don't have to leave the site you're browsing to see its reviews. In a post on the Google blog, Chrome Product Manager Archit Agarwal announced a new feature for the browser that lets you see reviews for a store by using the site information tool. 'We're introducing store reviews to Google Chrome in the US to make your online shopping experience safer and more efficient,' Agarwal wrote. Google Users in the US can access this feature by clicking on the icon to the left of the site address. The tool will bring up an AI-generated summary of reviews, along with the ability to view all the customer reviews in a new window. The feature doesn't only use data from Google Shopping, but also insights from popular review websites. The AI-generated summary covers aspects like the store's customer service, product quality, shipping, pricing, and returns policy. This will make it easier to quickly obtain information about a store's reputation. The move follows other improvements to the browser that make it an appealing option for online shoppers. For example, Google's shopping insights feature makes it easy to track the price of a product you're interested in. But since these features are limited to certain regions, you might want to use Chrome extensions to bolster the browser's functionality in the meantime. Follow

Google Chrome adds AI-powered store summaries to help US shoppers

Google on Monday announced an update to its Chrome web browser that will introduce AI-generated store reviews to U.S. shoppers with the aim of helping to determine the best places to make a purchase. The feature, which will be available by clicking an icon just to the left of the web address in the browser itself, will display a pop-up that informs consumers about the store's reputation for things like product quality, shopping, pricing, customer service, and returns. The currently English-only feature will generate the summaries based on reviews from partners, including Bazaarvoice, Bizrate Insights, ResellerRatings, ScamAdvisor, TrustPilot, TurnTo, Yotpo, Verified Reviews, and others. The feature will initially be available to Chrome on the desktop. When reached for comment, Google could not confirm if or when AI summaries would come to mobile devices. Image Credits:Google Google says the goal with the summaries is to provide a safer and more efficient shopping experience. However, the feature also helps Google better compete with other AI features rolled out by retail giant Amazon, which has been using the new technology to summarize product ratings and reviews, help customers find clothes that fit, get product recommendations and comparisons, and more. The changes arrive as Google, for the first time in many years, is facing a potential competitive threat to Chrome's dominance in the global browser market. New AI-powered browsers like Perplexity's Comet, The Browser Company's Dia, Opera Neon, and perhaps a challenger from OpenAI, have the search giant thinking about how to infuse AI more directly into its own web browser. For example, Google is developing an AI agent that would be able to take control of Chrome for you to take actions on your behalf. Plus, the company recently added support for its Gemini AI assistant in Chrome for Gemini subscribers. The move is also a part of a broader initiative underway at Google to make it more of a modern-day shopping platform for consumers. Already, the company has tapped AI to help customers locate the products they're interested in, get personalized product recommendations, virtually try-on clothes, and has been developing tools for better price-tracking, shopping in Google's AI Mode, and AI-powered agentic checkout. (The latter two were announced at this year's Google I/O developer conference. Google recently announced that getting outfit and room inspiration in AI Mode would roll out this fall.)
