Ramanan pledges RM100,000 to boost school facilities in Sungai Buloh
The allocation involves SMK Sierramas and SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara, each receiving RM50,000 for the construction of covered walkways, new classrooms, canteen repairs and other basic facilities in urgent need of maintenance.
Ramanan, who is also PKR vice president, said the initiative aims to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment in line with the growing number of students and current educational needs.
'We want the children of Sungai Buloh to have access to the best education. Their schools must be equipped with safe, student-friendly facilities. This is an investment in the nation's future,' he said when officiating the programme today.
During the event, he also announced that over 10 outstanding SPM 2024 students from both schools will receive Special Education Incentives from Yayasan Bank Rakyat next week in recognition of their academic achievements.
Ramanan also personally contributed RM6,000 to SPM Excellence Award recipients from SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara.
On the improved School Average Grade (GPS) for the 2024 SPM results at both schools, Ramanan said it reflects the combined efforts of teachers, parents and students.
'These efforts show the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency's ongoing commitment to strengthening the education ecosystem — not only in terms of infrastructure, but also in recognising the efforts and achievements of students,' he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — MCA today voiced concern over the Education Ministry's proposal to fine or jail teachers caught vaping or smoking on school grounds, saying the move risks punishing educators without addressing the root causes of the problem. MCA education consultative committee deputy chairperson Felicia Wong Yin Ting said the proposed penalties — fines of up to RM10,000 or a maximum two-year jail term under the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024 — must be weighed against the realities faced by teachers. 'Imposing heavy fines and imprisonment as the implied first and only option for vaping offences among already overburdened and under-rewarded teachers appears disproportionate,' she said in a press statement today. 'In some cases, vaping may be an unhealthy coping mechanism for stress rather than a deliberate act of defiance against professional standards,' she added. Wong also said schools are dealing with 'far more serious' challenges such as teacher shortages, bullying, and sexual misconduct; which she viewed as posing a greater concern for student wellbeing than incidents of teachers vaping on school grounds. 'These critical issues require urgent, sustained attention and resources from the education ministry, yet they often remain under-addressed,' she said. Citing Khazanah Research Institute data from April 2024, Wong said nearly three-quarters of Malaysian education graduates earn below RM2,000, with only a small fraction exceeding RM3,000. She added that in 2023, 6,394 teachers opted for early retirement, up from 5,306 the previous year, with many citing disinterest in their roles alongside family, health, and workload factors. Wong urged the government to consider measures such as counselling, mandatory training or suspension before custodial sentences, and to invest more in teachers' mental health, remuneration and working conditions. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek yesterday said teachers caught smoking or vaping on school grounds could face fines of up to RM10,000 or a maximum two-year jail term. She said the Ministry of Education will not tolerate such behaviour as it breaches the Malaysian Teacher Standard and sets a negative example for students.

‘This cannot go on if country is to progress': Speaker slams MPs over shouting match, cursing in Parliament
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — A commotion sparked by a war of words among several Members of Parliament today drew the ire of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, who described the incident as 'highly embarrassing'. 'What is this? What kind of elected representatives are you? Very shameful of you all, shameful. You're adults, not children, to be quarrelling like this,' he said. The incident followed a verbal clash between government and opposition MPs after the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) by Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN–Marang). Chong Zemin (PH–Kampar) stood up citing Standing Order 36(1) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, stating that the PAS president did not touch on 13MP at all in his debate. This led to a commotion lasting about seven minutes, involving, among others, opposition MPs Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (Arau), Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (Bachok), Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (Besut) and government MP RSN Rayer (Jelutong), while Suhaizan Kaiat (PH–Pulai) was chairing the session. MCMC said the statements were taken at its headquarters yesterday. A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized. 'We will not compromise with any party that mocks or belittles the national anthem, in line with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which requires all citizens to show respect for it,' MCMC said in a statement. MCMC did not reveal the identity of the two individuals. However, its probe comes two days after a Malaysian Chinese social media 'influencer' apologised for taking out his phone to record a video as the national anthem was being played at an event. Choo Hao Ren acknowledged that his actions, caught on video in a clip that went viral, were inappropriate and that he should have sung the national anthem solemnly and with respect. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh nevertheless called for punitive action against Choo for disrespecting the national anthem and the country.
