New York Police Mourn Their "Very Best" Cop Killed In Manhattan Shooting
"Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today," the NYPD wrote on X.

The 36-year-old was a Bronx resident and immigrant from Bangladesh who had served in the NYPD for three and a half years. He was assigned to the 47th Precinct and remembered by colleagues, city leaders, and state officials as a model officer and devoted public servant.
Governor Kathy Hochul also praised Islam and called him "the very best of New York." She said, "An immigrant from Bangladesh, he joined the NYPD to protect his city and gave his life doing so."
She mentioned that he is survived by his wife, two young sons, and a third child on the way. "We hold his family in our prayers tonight," she added.

New York mayor Eric Adams also offered heartfelt condolences following the his death.
"Last night, I spoke with Officer Islam's father and learned that he was his only son," the mayor wrote on X, adding, "Though I serve as mayor, I am also a father. I thought of my own son, and the unbearable pain I would feel if our roles were reversed."
"Children are supposed to bury their parents. Parents aren't supposed to bury their children," before concluding the post.
Earlier in the day, Mr Adams also announced that all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaff throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-mast until further notice.

The shooting occurred on the morning of July 29 at 345 Park Avenue, when 27-year-old Shane Tamura entered the lobby and fatally shot Officer Islam. Reports say at least four people were killed during the incident before the shooter turned the gun on himself.

‘Migrant worker sent to Bangladesh booked in neighbouring country for illegal entry'
A migrant worker from West Bengal, who was pushed into Bangladesh by security agencies, has been booked for 'illegally entering' the neighbouring country, State's Migrant Welfare Board chief Samirul Islam said on Tuesday. Mr. Islam, who is also a Trinamool Congress MP, was referring to the detention and 'pushback' of Amir Sheikh from Kaliachak. He was picked up from Rajasthan in May this year and sent to Bangladesh. 'Interestingly, there was no way to repatriate Mr. Amir except through legal intervention, as he had been tagged under a case involving illegal entry into Bangladesh. Amid such a situation, the Central government is now trying to repatriate Mr. Amir to his Malda home to save face and avoid the legal blow for the illegal pushback,' the chairperson of migrant welfare board posted on social media. Earlier this month, the father of Mr. Amir filed a habeas corpus petition before the Calcutta High Court and the court has sought response from Rajasthan government and Union government. The matter is likely to come up for hearing later this week. Imprisoned for weeks A video of the 19-year-old migrant worker has also surfaced on social media where he can be seen in tears seeking help for repatriation. According to his parents, Jiyem Sheikh and Renu Bibi, he was picked up by the police from Rajasthan in May 2025 and sent to Bangladesh by security agencies and was kept in prison for a few weeks. The parents have produced all documents including their passport, shared a video in which their son is narrating his plight asking for help and sought intervention from district officials. But their son is yet to come home. Hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrants have faced alleged detention and harassment in different States across the country and asked to produce documents to prove they are not Bangladeshi nationals. Some of the migrant workers were also pushed into Bangladesh but later repatriated with the help of Indian authorities, Mr. Islam said. The Trinamool Congress has blamed the Central government for the plight of Mr. Amir, who continues to languish in a prison in Bangladesh.

Kerala woman's alleged suicide over ‘forced' conversion triggers row
The alleged suicide of a 23-year-old woman in Kerala's Ernakulam district after she was allegedly tortured by a man and his family who insisted that she convert to his faith has triggered a row, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. The woman, a college student Sona Eldose, was found dead at her home in Kothamangalam town on Saturday, The Hindu reported. The police had initially registered a case of unnatural death. However, a purported suicide note was recovered, following which the police on Monday arrested the man, and charged him with abetting suicide and physical assault. The man was identified as 24-year-old Ramees. Ramees, a part-time employee at the Kochi airport, had also been picked up by the police two weeks earlier on allegations of 'immoral trafficking', The Indian Express reported. Basil, Eldose's brother, told reporters that Ramees and his sister met in college. She was earlier willing to convert her religion and marry him, he said. 'But three months ago, our father died, and the marriage could only be held a year later,' the newspaper quoted him as saying. He claimed that Eldose changed her mind about converting after Ramees was caught for alleged trafficking. 'But he was insistent and wanted to stay at a religious centre at Ponnani [in Malappuram district] for two months,' Basil said. 'They even made arrangements to take her there. When she refused to go, Ramees and his family members tortured her after detaining her at their house.' In her purported suicide note, Eldose claimed that she had forgiven Ramees after he was caught for alleged trafficking and that she was ready for a registered marriage without the religious ceremonies. 'But he wanted me to convert,' The Indian Express quoted her as purportedly saying in the note. 'After taking me out of my home under the pretext of registering the marriage, he lodged me at his house, where his family members insisted that I should convert. When I refused, they tortured me.' The woman eventually returned home and allegedly died by suicide. Unidentified police officers told the newspaper that Eldose had sent the note to Ramees' mother on Saturday. She also informed her own mother, who, upon returning home, found that Sona had died. After the incident came to light, the Kerala Hindu Aikyavedi, a Hindutva outfit, and the Syro-Malabar Church described it as a case of 'love jihad', The Indian Express reported. Love jihad is a Hindutva conspiracy theory that Muslim men trick Hindu women into romantic relationships with the aim of converting them to Islam. The Union home ministry has told Parliament that Indian law has no provision defining such a term. V Babu, the state chief of the Kerala Hindu Aikyavedi, claimed that the 'secular' society in Kerala was busy criticising the film The Kerala Story even though it reflected the truth. The film, which released in May 2023, claims to depict how women from Kerala were converted to Islam and recruited by the Islamic State terror group. The filmmakers initially claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had joined the Islamic State, but when asked for evidence, they altered the trailer to state that the movie was a 'compilation of the true stories of three young girls'. Critics have accused the film of spreading misinformation and inciting communal hatred. The Syro-Malabar Church said that political parties should show the courage to oppose all tendencies that pose a threat to secularism, the newspaper reported. 'It is sad that girls still fail to understand the religious extremists who make use of genuine love as a weapon of betrayal,' it said in a statement. 'It is expected that the law will take its course. Or, are we going to see the law taking the course of certain organised forces?'

But, they were unwilling to cooperate with that request. Amid all this, Ramees was arrested in connection with an immoral trafficking case. When Sona came to know about it, serious issues began to surface in their relationship,' Basil told TNIE. 'Even after knowing about his profligacy, she still chose to stay with Ramees. Because, she was that committed to their relationship,' Basil said in a broken voice. 'Following that incident, Sona stood firm on her decision not to change her religion, and she wanted a registered marriage. Their common friend and her husband from Adimali helped make the arrangements. But at the last moment, Ramees backed out of those plans and told her that the preparations for the marriage were being arranged at Aluva registrar's office. And under the pretext of taking her for the registration of marriage at Aluva, Ramees took Sona with him, but instead of going to the registrar's office, he took her to his house in Aluva. There, with the support of his parents, relatives, and close friends, he locked her inside a room. She was only released after she threatened to inform me,' Basil said. 'She was so afraid of her safety that she didn't even drink a drop of water from that house before returning,' he added.
