Surrey dominate Durham, Thunder beat Bears
The game against Surrey began badly for Durham, who saw both openers bowled inside the first five overs - Suzie Bates and Mady Villiers both dismissed by Ryana MacDonald-Gay.From 29-3, Hollie Armitage led a revival, adding 40 with Bess Heath (27) and 38 with Mia Rogers, and although she went to 50 off 49 balls in the last over and Katherine Fraser hit the final ball of the innings for six, their score did not look enough.So it proved as Wyatt-Hodge and Bryony Smith matched each other shot for shot in bringing up a 50 partnership in the fourth over.Wyatt-Hodge launched Katie Levick over mid-wicket for a maximum, the first of two sixes in her innings to go with 11 fours, but the stand came to an end on 94 when Smith was caught in the deep off Phoebe Turner for 44 from 28 balls.Replacement Kira Chathli opened her account with a six and made an unbeaten 19 from 13 before Wyatt-Hodge ended the game by cutting Bates to the point boundary.
Bears come up short despite Wraith knock
Emma Lamb was back in the Lancashire side against the Bears following England duty but it was not a happy return as she was bowled through the gate for five by Issy Wong in the first over.They struggled to 31-4, batting in a steady drizzle, before a 69-run partnership between Ailsa Lister and Australian Alana King which ended when the former was lbw for 36 as she tried to sweep Hannah Baker.King made 21 before hitting Millie Taylor (2-25) to deep mid-wicket but Norris lofted a six over mid-off as she steered Thunder to 162-7.Bears made a positive start in reply as Davina Perrin made a rapid 34 before being bowled by one from Grace Johnson which kept low.Charis Pavely contributed 27 but they were losing momentum at 101-6 in the 14th over when Wong was bowled by Norris as she tried to make room to force the ball through the off side.Wraith, though, kept them in the game, clearing the ropes and hitting four fours as she reached 50 from just 29 balls, but wickets continued to fall at the other end and she lost the strike midway through the last over as Thunder squeezed home. "We have had a couple of tough ones in the last couple of games, so to get a win on the board is brilliant and we are right back in the mixer," Lancashire skipper Ellie Threlkeld said.

Alexander Isak refuses to play for Newcastle again in bid to force through Liverpool transfer
Alexander Isak's agent has told Newcastle United he does not want to play for the club again as the striker looks to force through a move to Liverpool. That was the catalyst behind manager Eddie Howe's decision to order Isak to train alone and his admission last weekend that the player is not in the right frame of mind to be considered for selection. Despite the threats to go on strike, Newcastle are yet to receive an official transfer request from the player, which would be the next logical step if Isak is adamant he has played his last game for the club – although that could change in the coming days. Despite his poor attitude and behaviour, Newcastle have chosen not to fine the player for his actions, something they would be entitled to do if he was refusing to play. They are also baffled by the threat that he will not play for the club again, even if he is denied a move to Liverpool, given he is under contract for another three years and there is a World Cup next summer in which he will hope to play for Sweden. In a fresh development on Tuesday morning, Newcastle announced they had allocated Isak his usual number 14 squad number for the upcoming season, in another sign they intend to stick to their position that last season's top goalscorer is not for sale. Howe was as diplomatic as he could be when asked about Isak's future last weekend, hinting that the player is refusing to participate in training or games, without explicitly saying it. Instead, he claimed the player was not in the right frame of mind to be involved, as much as he would like him to be. Rather than blame Isak, Newcastle are pointing the finger at the player's representatives for the latest move to try to force them to sell against their wishes. Newcastle have maintained a steadfast position all summer that the 25-year-old is not for sale, but have been forced to at least consider the terms for his departure in light of the striker's volatile behaviour. A senior source told Telegraph Sport over the weekend that the only way they could allow Isak to leave is if Liverpool make a bid in the region of £150m and they are able to sign two strikers of suitable quality to replace him. The main issue is Newcastle's recruitment team – having missed out on Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko – do not believe there are two strikers on the market who meet their needs. Liverpool have also intimated they will not offer that sort of money for a player they know is desperate to join them. Newcastle continue to be frustrated in their attempts to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, but he was always seen as a replacement for Callum Wilson who left earlier this summer. They are also interested in signing Leicester City's Bilal El Khannouss and Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey, but neither are linked to the Isak's situation. As a result, Newcastle continue to insist Isak is not for sale with one source on Sunday evening insisting the 'transfer is completely off the table'. That may well have sparked a fresh offensive from Isak's camp to try to alter that stance. Liverpool had a bid worth around £110m rejected more than a week ago, the strength of the rebuttal prompting a briefing they would not return with an improved offer unless they were encouraged to do so by Newcastle. They are yet to receive any encouragement from the Magpies hierarchy who, led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, are determined not to be bullied by a rival club or the player or his agent. The deadlock is set to continue and there was little sign of an imminent shift in Newcastle's position despite Isak's behaviour. Isak has still not said a word in public about his desire to leave the club, suggesting he is still keeping his options open in case he is not allowed to leave. What sort of player Isak will be if that happens remains to be seen and the damage done to his reputation on Tyneside is severe. Supporters are furious at what they perceive to be a lack of loyalty and appreciation for everything they – and Howe – have given Isak in the three years he has been at St James' Park. The club's former captain, Alan Shearer, has been damning in his assessment of the situation. 'Newcastle's pre-season has been a nightmare,' he said in his BBC column. 'They have had a disastrous transfer window, missing out on every one of their top targets, and on top of that they have got Isak's situation hanging over them. 'One way or another they have to resolve it, but that won't be easy. Isak wants to leave St James' Park and join Liverpool, but he cannot be sold if they don't get anyone in to replace him. It's not just one new striker Newcastle needs. Callum Wilson moved on so the reality is that if they don't get two centre-forwards in, Isak does not go anywhere. 'That is still a possible scenario and, if he is still at Newcastle when the window closes, things get interesting because he will want to play – he could be playing for his World Cup place with Sweden. There are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes surrounding Isak, but over the next two or three weeks we will find out a lot more about how things could pan out.'

World player of the year Ellie Kildunne intends to emulate Lionesses star Chloe Kelly by ensuring her name is printed on fans' shirts following the Women's Rugby World Cup. The Harlequins full-back is brimming with confidence ahead of her country's quest for global glory on home soil and has taken inspiration from England's footballers retaining the European Championship title. Arsenal forward Kelly played a starring role in the Euro 2025 triumph in Switzerland after propelling herself into the limelight by scoring the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley. Kildunne is key to the Red Roses' ambitions of lifting silverware at Twickenham next month and hopes the team can follow in the Lionesses' footsteps by becoming household names and raising the profile of women's sport. Kildunne cemented her status as a poster girl for the tournament by being crowned world player of the year following a standout 2024 which brought 14 tries in nine Tests. 'I see pressure as as privilege and I definitely think it's a good thing. 'I'm feeling strong and confident – the most confident I've ever felt, so I'm ready and raring to go.' After the many key departures this summer, a lot of pre-season predictions will inevitably tip us for I think they are course it was a massive blow to lose Thomas Frank, captain Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo, who was the only one expected to leave, while Yoane Wissa's absence has been main hope for the campaign is that Keith Andrews' appointment as head coach proves to be a masterstroke and leaves the pundits feeling I said in my last column, nobody can know whether Andrews, a head coach for the first time, will prove to be good at his new job - only time will tell. However, the stats show that last term he was an excellent set piece coach - another role he had never done I doubt we will match last season's top-half finish, we have enough about us and enough good players to end up well clear of any trouble. In the circumstances, that would be an fear for the season though is that we may struggle to score goals and that could cost us some and Wissa scored 39 between them last season and, while Kevin Schade will hopefully find the net as regularly as he did at times in 2024-25, it could take Igor Thiago, in effectively his first full campaign with us, a while to adjust and get up and and any potential glut of injuries could see us looking over our shoulders defence, though, is stronger than last season with no departures and the full return of Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry, which is like having two new signings at the back.
