Surrey dominate Durham, Thunder beat Bears
Surrey continue to set the pace in the women's T20 Blast as punishing batting by England's Danni Wyatt-Hodge ushered them to a comfortable nine-wicket win over Durham at The Oval.After restricting the visitors to 141-5, they made it four wins out of four by reaching 143-1 with 43 balls to spare, Wyatt-Hodge hitting the winning boundary to finish with 74 not out from just 36 balls.In Sunday's other game, Lancashire Thunder picked up only their second win in five matches as Tara Norris made an unbeaten 33 and took 3-25 to help them beat Bears by five runs.Chasing a target of 163, the home side needed 14 off the final over at Edgbaston, but could only muster eight, with Natasha Wraith finishing on 57 not out from 36 deliveries, the highest score of the match. The game against Surrey began badly for Durham, who saw both openers bowled inside the first five overs - Suzie Bates and Mady Villiers both dismissed by Ryana MacDonald-Gay.From 29-3, Hollie Armitage led a revival, adding 40 with Bess Heath (27) and 38 with Mia Rogers, and although she went to 50 off 49 balls in the last over and Katherine Fraser hit the final ball of the innings for six, their score did not look enough.So it proved as Wyatt-Hodge and Bryony Smith matched each other shot for shot in bringing up a 50 partnership in the fourth over.Wyatt-Hodge launched Katie Levick over mid-wicket for a maximum, the first of two sixes in her innings to go with 11 fours, but the stand came to an end on 94 when Smith was caught in the deep off Phoebe Turner for 44 from 28 balls.Replacement Kira Chathli opened her account with a six and made an unbeaten 19 from 13 before Wyatt-Hodge ended the game by cutting Bates to the point boundary.
Bears come up short despite Wraith knock
Emma Lamb was back in the Lancashire side against the Bears following England duty but it was not a happy return as she was bowled through the gate for five by Issy Wong in the first over.They struggled to 31-4, batting in a steady drizzle, before a 69-run partnership between Ailsa Lister and Australian Alana King which ended when the former was lbw for 36 as she tried to sweep Hannah Baker.King made 21 before hitting Millie Taylor (2-25) to deep mid-wicket but Norris lofted a six over mid-off as she steered Thunder to 162-7.Bears made a positive start in reply as Davina Perrin made a rapid 34 before being bowled by one from Grace Johnson which kept low.Charis Pavely contributed 27 but they were losing momentum at 101-6 in the 14th over when Wong was bowled by Norris as she tried to make room to force the ball through the off side.Wraith, though, kept them in the game, clearing the ropes and hitting four fours as she reached 50 from just 29 balls, but wickets continued to fall at the other end and she lost the strike midway through the last over as Thunder squeezed home. "We have had a couple of tough ones in the last couple of games, so to get a win on the board is brilliant and we are right back in the mixer," Lancashire skipper Ellie Threlkeld said.

England chase down huge total of 197 to beat West indies by four wickets and seal T20 series victory
Harry Brook hailed England's new-found unity after they pulled off a huge chase in Bristol to win the second T20 international by four wickets, and set up the chance of a second clean sweep over a dispirited West Indies. On a day of 25 sixes at Bristol's petite Nevil Road, England knocked off a target of 197 with an impressive nine balls to spare to take a 2–0 lead into Tuesday's third and final match in Southampton. Only once before had they successfully chased more to beat West Indies – and they could probably have hauled in 20 more. Having lost eight white-ball games in a row as Jos Buttler 's regime came to a sorry end, England have now won five in succession, and are playing with some of the verve that characterised Eoin Morgan 's time in charge. 'It feels like we're a group of mates,' said Brook. 'We're just going out and having fun. The results are awesome but we're really enjoying ourselves. 'At the end of games, we go round in a circle and Baz [McCullum] asks if anyone has anything to say, and so far someone has stood up each time and said something. That's a great way of showing how the team is at the minute. We feel a proper togetherness.' With 105 needed off nine overs, England needed all the camaraderie they could get, having struggled to make headway against the left-arm spin of Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein, who landed at Heathrow only seven hours before the start, after finally resolving his visa issues in his native Trinidad. At that stage, it looked as if the West Indians might grab their first win of the tour, but Brook changed the mood by carving Romario Shepherd over deep backward point for an astonishing six. And while wickets continued to fall, including Jos Buttler for an inventive 47 off 36 balls and Brook himself for 34 off 20, it was the over that opened the floodgates. Tom Banton slog-swept his first ball for six off Roston Chase, then heaved Motie over long-on. And the fun continued in the 16th over when Jacob Bethell deposited Alzarri Joseph over fine leg, hit him down the ground on to the roof of the residential apartments, then carved him for over point for six more. It was the kind of innings that made his likely omission from the first Test against India later this month all the more absurd, with Ollie Pope favourite to keep his place at No 3 after taking 171 off Zimbabwe in the one-off Test at Trent Bridge. By the time Bethell reverse-scooped Joseph to short third man, he had contributed 26 off 10 balls and put England in the driving seat. Banton's unbeaten 30 off 11 ensured they stayed there. Despite hitting 10 sixes to West Indies' 15, they managed the chase superbly. 'That's where the depth in batting is perfect,' said Brook. 'The way Bants went about his business, having never batted in the middle order, was awesome. With the boundaries just 60 metres all the way round, we thought they were about 20 or 30 short, and we knew we could get some big overs in.' As if to prove his point, England managed 49 between the start of the 14th and the end of the 16th, a spell that included six sixes. It meant Ben Duckett's 18-ball 30 to get the chase going was all but forgotten. The biggest over of the day, however, had been the 19th of the West Indian innings, when Jason Holder and Shepherd took 31, with five sixes, off Adil Rashid. But with next year's T20 World Cup taking place in India and Sri Lanka, England are determined to pack their side with spinners. Brook had only two quicks at his disposal, and one of them – Brydon Carse – had already bowled his four overs. But while Rashid went the distance – conceding 59 in all, comfortably the most of his long career – the strategy has so far brought them two wins out of two in differing conditions at Durham and Bristol. Perhaps England's trump card with the ball, though, was the left-arm pace of Luke Wood, playing his first international since September 2023. Wood took a wicket with the game's first ball, spearing a yorker into the pads of the left-handed Evin Lewis, and conceded only four runs in his first two overs. He later bowled Johnson Charles for 47 in bizarre fashion, the ball ricocheting between the batsman's legs as he attempted a scoop, and held an athletic catch on the boundary to see off the dangerous Rovman Powell. A smiling Brook described Wood as 'another option to add to our armoury'. It won't always be this way, but everything the new captain is trying right now is paying off.

A four-wicket triumph in Bristol means Harry Brook has played five, won five since becoming permanent white-ball captain. 2 Quite a contrast from the stats when he took over from Jos Buttler - England had lost their previous seven matches. But his winning sequence looked in serious danger until Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton hoisted a string of sixes to propel England towards their target. England were chasing 197, which was a lot more than looked likely before Rashid delivered the 19th over of West Indies' innings. Jason Holder struck the first three balls for sixes, then came a single before Romario Shepherd sent the final two deliveries over the boundary. It was the second-most expensive over in history for England - behind only Stuart Broad's famous maximum 36 to India's Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Rashid would not normally have bowled the 19th over but England's policy of fielding only two specialist seamers means they are having to shuffle their bowlers differently. Last week, Buttler described Rashid as the most irreplaceable player in England's squad. He was right, too, but even the best bowlers can take punishment in these days of power-hitting, monster bats and short boundaries. The Windies ransacked 75 from their final four overs but still England overhauled their total with nine balls to spare. With an aggregate of 395 runs, it was the highest-scoring match in T20 international history without an individual fifty. 'We knew there would be maybe three big overs but I'm always pretty chilled. We feel like we're a bunch of mates going out and having some fun. 'The depth in our batting is perfect. Having Bethell and Banton coming in late and sealing victory was great.' After Jamie Smith perished early, there were contributions all down England's order but it was the late flurry by Bethell and Banton that accelerated the win. Bethell struck Alzarri Joseph for three sixes in a single over - over long leg, dead straight and over point. True 360 degree batting. Banton struck his first ball for six and finished 30 not out from just 11 balls. Earlier, left-arm seamer Luke Wood, in his first England appearance since September 2023, had Evin Lewis lbw with the first ball of the game. Wood finished with 2-25 from his four overs and was Player of the Match. The Windies struggled to reach top gear and stalled in the middle overs until the late assault on Rashid. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein's visa was finally granted and he went straight into the team after landing at Heathrow at 7.30am yesterday following an eight-hour flight from the Caribbean. England won the 50-over series 3-0 and are 2-0 up in the T20s. The final match is in Southampton on Tuesday.
