Who is Giovanni Battista Re? Everything we know about the Cardinal leading the Pope's funeral
The 91-year-old Dean of the College of Cardinals has been appointed with leading Pope Francis' funeral in Vatican.
Who is Giovanni Battista Re?
Giovanni Battista Re was born in Borno, Italy on January 30, 1934.
He was ordained a priest in Brescia in 1957.
Giovanni was a professor at the Brescia seminary and graduated with a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian.
He then joined the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1961 to train for a career in diplomacy.
He joined the Roman curia in 1963, marking the start of his career at the Vatican.
According to the Holy See Press Office, he worked as a personal assistant to Archbishop Giovanni Benelli after serving on missions in Panama and Iran.
He served as the Substitute for General Affairs of the Vatican's Secretariat of State for over ten years, overseeing the day-to-day activities of the Holy See.
In 2001, he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal.
From 2020, Cardinal Giovanni has been the Dean of the College of Cardinals - a body of the highest ranking members of the Catholic Church who, in a secretive process known as a papal conclave, elect a new pope.
However, only those under 80 years participate in the secret voting which means Cardinal Giovanni will be excluded.
Giovanni presided over the Pope's funeral on April 26.
Cardinal Battista said Francis was "a Pope among the people, with an open heart towards everyone".
The Cardinal said: "He established direct contact with individuals and peoples, eager to be close to everyone, with a marked attention to those in difficulty, giving himself without measure, especially to the marginalised, the least among us."

Italy's Giorgia Meloni's side-eye goes viral as she's seated next to Trump during crunch talks
Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni appeared to give side-eye to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday as they attended a high-stakes meeting in the East Room with President Donald Trump. Meloni and Merz were among the European leaders who flew to Washington to back up Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was receiving a debrief from Trump after the president's meeting Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump is attempting to end the war in Ukraine. During his Oval Office meeting with Zelensky, Trump stated that a ceasefire deal wasn't necessary ahead of a broader peace agreement. Afterward, Zelensky and the other European leaders gathered around a table in the East Room for a meeting. Merz - and later French President Emmanuel Macron - pressed Trump on the ceasefire issue. 'Let's try and put pressure on Russia, because the credibility of this effort, these efforts we are undertaking today, are depending on at least a ceasefire from the beginning of the serious negotiations, from next stop on,' Merz told Trump. Between Merz and the American president sat Meloni - who was captured on camera making several odd expressions with her eyes as the German chancellor went on. 'So I would like to emphasize this aspect and would like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting, wherever it takes place,' Merz said. Last month Meloni got called out for dramatically rolling her eyes amid a conversation with Macron at the G7 in Canada. A year before, at the G7, she got caught rolling her eyes after then President Joe Biden was late for the third day in a row. The 48-year-old has served as the prime minister of Italy since October 2022 - a particularly lengthy time for an Italian leader. She came into office as a far-right conservative and thus is more politically aligned with Republican Trump than some of her European counterparts. Going around the table, Trump called Meloni 'a really great leader and an inspiration over there.' 'She's served now, even though she's a very young person, she's served there for a long period of time relative to others,' the president marveled. 'They don't last very long,' he laughed. 'You've lasted a long time. You're going to be there a long time,' Trump said. Finnish President Alexander Stubb watched as reporters shouted questions toward Trump, Zelensky and the leaders as they were ushered out by White House wranglers. 'You do this every day?' Stubb asked Trump. 'All the time,' the U.S. president answered. Meloni then interjected. 'But he loves it, he loves it,' she said dramatically, then adding how she doesn't like engaging with the Italian press. Trump then told Meloni that Stubbs was a 'very good golfer, you know.'

Trump offers assurances that US troops will not be sent to help defend Ukraine
The Republican president, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders held hours of talks at the White House on Monday aimed at bringing an end to Russia's war against Ukraine. The White House meeting (Alex Brandon/AP) While answering questions from journalists, Mr Trump did not rule out sending US troops to participate in a European-led effort to defend Ukraine as part of security guarantees sought by Mr Zelensky. Mr Trump said after his meeting in Alaska last week with Vladimir Putin that the Russian leader was open to the idea of security guarantees for Ukraine. But asked on Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends what assurances he could provide going forward and beyond his term that American troops would not be part of defending Ukraine's border, Mr Trump said: 'Well, you have my assurance, and I'm president.' Mr Trump would have no control over the US military after his terms ends in January 2029. The president also said in the interview that he is optimistic that a deal can be reached to end the Russian invasion, but he underscored that Ukraine will have to set aside its hope of getting back Crimea, which was seized by Russian forces in 2014, and its long-held aspirations of joining the Nato military alliance. 'Both of those things are impossible,' Mr Trump said. Mr Putin, as part of any potential deal to pull his forces out of Ukraine, is looking for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as recognition of Crimea as Russian territory.

Popular seaside town baffles locals by proudly flying EU, Polish & French flags – but NOT the Union Jack
Residents were left baffled by the bizarre bunch of flags SEA THIS Popular seaside town baffles locals by proudly flying EU, Polish & French flags – but NOT the Union Jack Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WELSH council is bizarrely flying the EU, Polish, Ukrainian, French and Irish flags - but not the Union Flag. Seaside town Llandudno has a dozen flagpoles along its popular promenade but none are currently flying Britain's red white and blue. 6 The flag of the Falkland Islands is one of the flags being flown in Llandudno Credit: 6 The EU flag was also flown over the small seaside town Credit: 6 The Ukranian flag was seen spotted flapping in the wind along the promenade Credit: The St George's Flag and the Welsh Red Dragon are also featured alongside a range of flags from around the world. Llandudno resident Martin Edwards, 60, told The Sun: 'We left the EU, so why are we flying that? 'I just find it really strange. Why are we flying the Polish flag? That's just bizarre. 'I just think it must have been deliberate, somewhere along the line, a deliberate choice was made to exclude the Union Jack. 'We have a very spectacular promenade with a whole line of flagpoles on there. 'It's been an ongoing trend. I wouldn't be surprised if it was left wing councils wanting to ditch the United Kingdom identity. 'My wife is from Latvia and they wouldn't dream of having a town hall without the national flag of Latvia.' The Union flag and Welsh flag are usually flown outside Llandudno Town Hall during the summer season. Locals noted their absence this year however with the council saying the mistake was down to "staff changes." The local authority said it would see the Union and Welsh flags raised as quickly as possible. Starmer wades into flag row after SECOND woke council vows to remove St George's cross Minutes from a meeting of the Civic Sub Committee from September 2023 reveal the full list of flags to be flown along the seafront - but the Union Flag is not included. The minutes read: 'Members considered a procedure for the flying of flags on the Town Council flagpoles on the Promenade and IT WAS RESOLVED that the flags of the following would be flown on an annual basis from May to September: Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, Falklands, European Union (EU) and that other flags in stock would be flown in rotation on the final flag pole.' It was also noted in the meeting that some residents had 'expressed confusion' as to why the EU flag was being flown after Brexit. The council meeting minutes said that the flag was there 'as a welcome to the many EU visitors to and EU residents of Llandudno'. The Union Flag and the Welsh flag were previously flown outside the town hall - but have not been put up this year. A spokesperson for Conwy County Borough Council said: 'The Union flag and Welsh flag are usually flown outside Llandudno Town Hall throughout the summer season. 'Unfortunately, due to staff changes, this task was overlooked this year, we'll arrange for the flags to be raised as soon as possible.' 6 The small seaside town is only home to roughly 20,000 people Credit: 6 For some bizarre reason the Swiss flag was flown over the town Credit:
