The 91-year-old Dean of the College of Cardinals has been appointed with leading Pope Francis' funeral in Vatican.
Who is Giovanni Battista Re?
Giovanni Battista Re was born in Borno, Italy on January 30, 1934.
He was ordained a priest in Brescia in 1957.
Giovanni was a professor at the Brescia seminary and graduated with a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian.
He then joined the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1961 to train for a career in diplomacy.
He joined the Roman curia in 1963, marking the start of his career at the Vatican.
According to the Holy See Press Office, he worked as a personal assistant to Archbishop Giovanni Benelli after serving on missions in Panama and Iran.
He served as the Substitute for General Affairs of the Vatican's Secretariat of State for over ten years, overseeing the day-to-day activities of the Holy See.
In 2001, he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal.
From 2020, Cardinal Giovanni has been the Dean of the College of Cardinals - a body of the highest ranking members of the Catholic Church who, in a secretive process known as a papal conclave, elect a new pope.
However, only those under 80 years participate in the secret voting which means Cardinal Giovanni will be excluded.
Giovanni presided over the Pope's funeral on April 26.
Cardinal Battista said Francis was "a Pope among the people, with an open heart towards everyone".
The Cardinal said: "He established direct contact with individuals and peoples, eager to be close to everyone, with a marked attention to those in difficulty, giving himself without measure, especially to the marginalised, the least among us."

Who else is attending the Pope's funeral?
The Pope's funeral is expected to draw world leaders and thousands of mourners from around the globe.
This includes President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
No10 said Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will also attend the funeral, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Prince William is also to attend on behalf of the King, Kensington Palace announced.
King Charles and Queen Camilla previously paid tribute to the Pope in a touching statement.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa are also expected to attend.
This surge in famous visitors to the tiny 0.44sqkm country has prompted one of the most complex security operations ever to be launched.

'Let's try and put pressure on Russia, because the credibility of this effort, these efforts we are undertaking today, are depending on at least a ceasefire from the beginning of the serious negotiations, from next stop on,' Merz told Trump. Between Merz and the American president sat Meloni - who was captured on camera making several odd expressions with her eyes as the German chancellor went on. 'So I would like to emphasize this aspect and would like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting, wherever it takes place,' Merz said. Last month Meloni got called out for dramatically rolling her eyes amid a conversation with Macron at the G7 in Canada. A year before, at the G7, she got caught rolling her eyes after then President Joe Biden was late for the third day in a row. The 48-year-old has served as the prime minister of Italy since October 2022 - a particularly lengthy time for an Italian leader. She came into office as a far-right conservative and thus is more politically aligned with Republican Trump than some of her European counterparts. Going around the table, Trump called Meloni 'a really great leader and an inspiration over there.' 'She's served now, even though she's a very young person, she's served there for a long period of time relative to others,' the president marveled. 'They don't last very long,' he laughed. 'You've lasted a long time. You're going to be there a long time,' Trump said. But asked on Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends what assurances he could provide going forward and beyond his term that American troops would not be part of defending Ukraine's border, Mr Trump said: 'Well, you have my assurance, and I'm president.' Mr Trump would have no control over the US military after his terms ends in January 2029. The president also said in the interview that he is optimistic that a deal can be reached to end the Russian invasion, but he underscored that Ukraine will have to set aside its hope of getting back Crimea, which was seized by Russian forces in 2014, and its long-held aspirations of joining the Nato military alliance. 'Both of those things are impossible,' Mr Trump said. Mr Putin, as part of any potential deal to pull his forces out of Ukraine, is looking for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as recognition of Crimea as Russian territory.

Starmer wades into flag row after SECOND woke council vows to remove St George's cross Minutes from a meeting of the Civic Sub Committee from September 2023 reveal the full list of flags to be flown along the seafront - but the Union Flag is not included. The minutes read: 'Members considered a procedure for the flying of flags on the Town Council flagpoles on the Promenade and IT WAS RESOLVED that the flags of the following would be flown on an annual basis from May to September: Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, Falklands, European Union (EU) and that other flags in stock would be flown in rotation on the final flag pole.' It was also noted in the meeting that some residents had 'expressed confusion' as to why the EU flag was being flown after Brexit. The council meeting minutes said that the flag was there 'as a welcome to the many EU visitors to and EU residents of Llandudno'. The Union Flag and the Welsh flag were previously flown outside the town hall - but have not been put up this year. A spokesperson for Conwy County Borough Council said: 'The Union flag and Welsh flag are usually flown outside Llandudno Town Hall throughout the summer season.
