
PlayStation prices to rise in US as tariffs bite
Tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump hike the cost of goods brought into the US, leaving companies like Japan's Sony to decide whether to pass that on to consumers.
"Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment," Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis said in a post.
After initially being threatened with a 25% hike, Japan negotiated a 15% tariff with the Trump administration.
"As a result, we've made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US," the company said.
The new price for PS5 will be $550, with a "Digital Edition" priced at $500 and a Pro version for $750, according to Tomatis.
In May, Sony warned it was considering tweaking prices in the US, estimating that tariffs could wind up costing the company about $680m in the fiscal year.
American companies are feeling the crunch, too.
New York-based cosmetics giant Estee Lauder recently estimated the impact of the new tariffs at around $100m for the 2026 financial year and plans to adjust its prices to offset the additional cost.
US snack giant PepsiCo could increase prices of its soft drinks about 10% to mitigate effects of US tariffs, particularly those on imported aluminum used to make drink cans, according to trade magazine Beverage Digest.
Meanwhile, California-based energy drink maker Monster Beverages is considering raising prices due to a "complex and dynamic customs landscape," according to chief executive Hilton Schlosberg.
The Commerce Department this week said the US broadened its steel and aluminum tariffs, impacting hundreds more products that contain both metals such as child seats, tableware and heavy equipment.
Since returning to the presidency, Trump has imposed tariffs on almost all US trading partners.
Though the impact of Trump's tariffs on consumer prices has been limited so far, economists warn that their full effects are yet to be seen.
Some businesses have coped by bringing forward purchases of products they expected will encounter tariffs. Others have passed on additional costs to their consumers, or absorbed a part of the fresh tariff burden.

The Irish Times view on the US/EU trade statement: some certainty on tariffs
It is unlikely that for as long as US president Donald Trump is in power the environment for trade will ever be settled. Potential chaos will always be around the corner. However, it is important to recognise the better days, too, and yesterday falls into this category. The agreed EU/US statement on trade – following the handshake deal more than three weeks ago between Trump and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen – is first of all important in and of itself. Initially expected within days of the meeting in Scotland, its nonappearance had raised fears that both sides were not on the same page. Now, an agreed piece of paper with important details has been signed off in Brussels and Washington. And some of the detail suggests that the EU side may have got more from the deal than some have suggested. Time will tell. In particular, a commitment to cap tariffs on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors at 15 per cent removes some uncertainty. There had been fears of higher tariffs in these areas following special studies being undertaken on them by the Trump administration. READ MORE Presuming the deal sticks, this will not now happen, while some areas of pharma will be excluded altogether. That said, as with other sectors, tariffs impose costs on consumers and producers and are a no-win policy approach. The 15 per cent tariffs on many exports – and the expectation of something similar on pharma – will be a burden on exporters. They will also damage the US economy and push up prices. Trump's tariff agenda is still bad news for Ireland and uncertainties remain about the impact of his wider industrial policy. But the codification of large elements of the US/EU deal at least keeps this process on track and avoids a transatlantic trade war. It also gives some more clarity to key sectors of the economy and raises hopes that the worst can be avoided. More battles and uncertainty remain ahead, but the publication of the joint statement is a positive step.

US court overturns $464m civil fraud penalty against Trump, calling the sum 'excessive'
A US COURT has thrown out a $464 million civil penalty against President Donald Trump imposed by a judge who found he fraudulently inflated his personal worth, calling the sum 'excessive' but upholding the judgment against him. Trump's son, Don Jr, has labelled it a 'massive win'. Judge Arthur Engoron ruled against Trump in February 2024 at the height of his campaign to retake the White House, which coincided with several active criminal prosecutions. Engoron went on to order the mogul-turned-politician to pay $464 million, including interest, while his sons Eric and Don Jr. were told to hand over more than $4 million each. The judge found that Trump and his company had unlawfully inflated his wealth and manipulated the value of properties to obtain favourable bank loans or insurance terms. Alongside the financial hit to Trump, the judge also banned him from running businesses for three years, which the president repeatedly referred to as a 'corporate death penalty.' On Thursday, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court upheld the verdict, but ruled that the size of the fine was 'excessive' and that it 'violates the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution.' Advertisement 'Massive win!' State Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the initial case, could now appeal to the state's highest court, the New York Court of Appeals. Following the initial verdict, Trump subsequently sought to challenge the civil ruling as well as the scale and terms of the penalty, which has continued to accrue interest while he appeals.
