Utd draw Everton, West Ham rout Bournemouth in US tour finale
The Red Devils earned a final point in Atlanta to top the table with seven in the pre-season friendly tournament, having previously beaten West Ham 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1 in the round-robin US tour.
'It's improving,' Fernandes told Sky Sports after the match. 'I think the club is doing the best that they can.
'We needed more competition for the players that were here. We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a little bit more, to have more to do to get into the first 11. I think that's what the club is trying to do, the manager, and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.'
Manchester United finished last season 15th in the Premier League, their worst showing since relegation in 1973-74, managing only 11 wins and nine drawn from 38 matches.
'I think a lot of people have suffered from this,' Fernandes said. 'The fans pay more for the tickets and we really appreciate all the efforts they do for us. 'So it's up to us now players to repay it on the pitch.'
Fernandes said the club is working to improve from team and staff to facilities.
'It's every detail. Every small thing matters,' Fernandes said. 'At this football club, you can't do anything wrong on the pitch and off the pitch because it's too big worldwide.
'The culture of this club was winning. It was there. And we need to bring back that.'
Everton's James Tarkowski brought down Amad Diallo in the penalty area and Fernandes blasted in the shot from the spot to lift Man United ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute.
French-born Senegalese international Iliman Ndiaye equalized for the Toffees in the 40th minute, tapping in off a pass from Senegal's Idrissa Gana Gueye.
Mason Mount, who entered the field barely 10 minutes earlier, took a pass from Fernandes and curled in a shot past Jordan Pickford in the 69th minute to put Manchester United back in front.
But Everton pulled level in the 75h minute when a ball directed back by Diallo deflected off Manchester United Ayden Heaven and into the back of the Man United net for an own goal.
Manager Ruben Amorim inserted newcomer Bryan Mbeumo into his starting lineup, the arrival from Brentford missing earlier matches to finish pre-season training.
Diouf sparks West Ham: Niclas Fullkrug and Jarrod Bowen scored to lift West Ham United over Bournemouth 2-0 earlier, giving the London side two wins from three matches in the Premier League Summer Series.
Spot-on set up passes by Senegalese left back El Hadji Malick Diouf, signed only on July 15, led to both West Ham goals.
'Both goals are down to him, the quality that he's got, you can see that,' Bowen said of Diouf. 'He has only been here a few weeks but you would think he has been here years.
'He's humble. He's a brilliant guy for the group and he's obviously a brilliant footballer as well. We're very excited to see what he can continue to do here.'
Diouf's centering ball found England's Bowen in the box, but he was forced to slide a pass left to German teammate Fullkrug, who fired in a shot from point-blank range in the 24th minute.
Bowen found the net in the 67th minute off a Diouf pass.
Bournemouth had plenty of chances in the first 15 minutes but the Cherries found the woodwork to squander early opportunities.
'What I liked was the character about the group. We didn't have the best start we wanted but we stuck in there,' Bowen said.

John Stones insists Manchester City have the 'fire in our bellies' to regain their Premier League title this season. City surrendered the crown they won in the previous four years to Liverpool during a bitterly disappointing 2024-25 campaign. Wirtz's creativity can make up for Trent loss: Reds' boss Slot
Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid has left Liverpool wanting for creativity but the signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz can help offset that deficiency, the Premier League club's manager Arne Slot said. Liverpool smashed their transfer record in June to sign Wirtz and bolster their attacking options, with the German international having scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. Man United confident €75m target Benjamin Sesko favours Old Trafford move ahead of Newcastle switch
Manchester United have bid €75 million plus add-ons for their long-term target Benjamin Sesko, the 22-year-old Slovenian who plays for RB Leipzig in Germany's Bundesliga. United understand that the player wants to move to Old Trafford and hope that it goes through in the same manner as Bryan Mbeumo's recent protracted transfer. His club, Brentford, wanted others to bid for him and create an auction situation, but United knew all along that the forward desired a move to Old Trafford – even after he had spoken to other clubs. This has not always been the case. United pursued Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong for much of the 2022 summer transfer window. While his club were prepared to sell and the fees were not an issue, De Jong was happy at Barcelona and had little desire to leave – and he remained at Camp Nou. United signed Casemiro from Real Madrid late on in the transfer window instead. The Red Devils face competition for Sesko from Newcastle United who are understood to have been trying to do a deal with his club to force both the player's hand and Manchester United's. The Old Trafford club feel their valuation is right. Newcastle have money to spend, Champions League football to offer but there is an air of desperation given their lead striker Alexander Isak may depart for Liverpool. The Magpies have also missed out on a succession of other targets in this transfer window – including Mbeumo and fellow summer arrival at Old Trafford, Matheus Cunha. It may be that Newcastle, who won a first trophy since 1969 in March, bid so much that Manchester United won't be willing to compete on price – or that Leipzig ask for so much that they price him out of a move this summer. Sesko has a contract at the German club until 2029. That Manchester United can afford to bid for the player after two big outlays already this summer is down to their cash and PSR [profit and sustainability rules] position being improved by Marcus Rashford going on loan to Barcelona, with his full wages paid. There were also sell-on fees for Anthony Elanga, Alvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele. The transfers of Cunha and Mbeumo will also be paid over multiple instalments with payments spread. United have also experienced a reduction in the wage bill since January with loan exits and wider club costs cut. United have tried to sign Sesko three times before. He was the number one target as recently as last year, a player considered a top-quality long-term option. Even then, United reckoned that he would cost €75m, but there were difficulties dealing with his agent who did not want Sesko to move to England when he was too young. They believed that if he continued to play well in Germany then United would return with a far more lucrative payday down the line. With two English teams now bidding for the player, they may have got that right.
