Curtis Blaydes: UFC Baku fight vs. newcomer Rizvan Kuniev 'doesn't help me at all'
In his first appearance since challenging for the interim heavyweight title last year, Blaydes (18-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) will welcome newcomer Rizvan Kuniev to the promotion. UFC on ABC 8 (ABC, ESPN, ESPN+) takes place Saturday at Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan.

"My expectations for the fight this weekend are same as always: I expect to win," Blaydes told reporters at media day.
While Blaydes aims to get back into the win column after losing an interim title bid against Tom Aspinall at UFC 304, the heavyweight wrestler doesn't see the matchup against Kuniev (13-2-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) as one that will get him closer to title contention.
"This fight doesn't help me at all," Blaydes said. "This guy is unranked. So, I could knock him out with a flying knee – it doesn't matter."
It's rare that a promotionally ranked top-five fighter would face an unranked fighter, but circumstances made it necessary for Blaydes. While Kuniev may not be a name that will help him move back up the ladder, it will help his bank account. Since his pay is the same whether or not there's a number next to his opponent's name, Blaydes decided it was time to collect a paycheck.

"If you look at the availability of guys, there wasn't anyone available," Blaydes said. "Who wants to wait? I haven't had a fight since last July. I'd like to make some money this year."
Blaydes recognizes that Kuniev is a threat inside the cage, but he views all heavyweights as such due to one-punch knockout power. If he's able to avoid that big shot and find a finish of his own, "Razor" Blaydes would love to get back into position to fight for the title soon, but he knows he'll have more work to do.
"I would love to fight for the title," Blaydes said. "That would be another $800 grand in my pocket, but it's not gonna happen, so I'm not even gonna put that in my mind. Having that expectation would just lead to me being disappointed, and I don't want to be disappointed. So, I'll be realistic: I'll probably need another fight."

UFC 319 results: Matches to make for ‘du Plessis vs. Chimaev' main card winners
UFC 319 went down last night (Sat. Aug., 16, 2025) inside United Center in Chicago, Ill., which saw Khamzat Chimaev dominate Dricus du Plessis for 25 minutes to become the undisputed Middleweight champion of the world (see it again here), while Lerone Murphy ruined Aaron Pico's UFC debut by knocking him out in the very first round via a spinning elbow (see it again here). Speaking of spinning elbow finishes, Carlos Prates did the same thing one fight prior, becoming the first person to ever finish Geoff Neal inside the Octagon, in the process (video replay here). Sorry, 'Fluffy,' but you are going to have to wait a bit longer to get your chance to drown the new 185-pound champion because Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho are set to collide at UFC Paris on Sept. 6, 2025 to determine who gets first crack at trying to dethrone Chimaev. Imavov is currently ranked No. 1 in the division and is on a four-fight win streak, with his last win being a technical knockout (TKO) over Israel Adesanya. As for Borralho, he is on a 16-fight unbeaten streak and is undefeated at 7-0 inside the Octagon, good enough to put him at No. 6 on the rankings. After ruining Aaron Pico's UFC welcome party, Murphy upped his stock by improving his record to 17-0-1, which will earn him a Top 5 spot. As far as a title shot, he may have very well locked it down because division champion, Alexander Volkanovski, was receptive to granting him a shot at the strap by the end of the year. If the promotion doesn't like that idea, they may book Murphy up against No. 1 ranked Evloev, who is also undefeated at 19-0. Interestingly enough, Evloev was supposed to face Pico before he bounced out of the fight. Prates got two of his four requests granted by Dana White last night following his spectacular win over Neal, as the UFC CEO not only gave him an extra $50K to play with, but also reserved a spot for him at the upcoming UFC Rio event in October. Prates called fore a showdown against former division king, Leon Edwards, and I don't see why it shouldn't be made. Edwards is currently on a two-fight losing streak, and while I usually don't like paring up fighters going in opposite directions, this one sort of makes sense because it's the new guard taking on the old. If Prates can take down Edwards, his march toward a title shot shortens quite a bit. Again, this is who he 'should' fight next, but Prates 'could' very well get Michael Page, since the two men are keen on fighting one another on the card. After his win over Jared Cannonier — who fought for the Middleweight title just three years ago — Page said he wasn't quite down with Welterweight, though he wouldn't mind staying put at 185 pounds if there was fight out there was the fun and exciting, and a matchup against Adesanya fits the bill perfectly. Adesanya has lost three straight fights, with his last win coming in April 2023. While 'The Last Stylebender' is obviously going downward in his career at the moment, he is still ranked in the Top 5 and would make for a fun matchup against 'Venom.' Both men love to stand and bang and both are two of the best showmen in the game today. Call me crazy, but this would make for a great five-round main event. But should UFC matchmakers go ahead and book Page against Prates, I wouldn't be mad at that, either. After nearly two years on the sidelines, Elliott returned with a vengeance, submitting former RIZIN Bantamweight champion, Kai Asakura, with a rear-naked choke in the second round of their Flyweight bout. Elliott is now 4-1 in his last five fights and could be staring at a Top 10 spot following his huge win over Asakura. Up next, a fight against Kape would be fun. Kape is 6-1 in his last seven fights and needs to get back into action after he was forced out of his fight against Brandon Royval, which went to Joshua Van, who upset Royval to become the new No. 1 ranked fighter in the division. Michael Page '100 percent' down to fight Carlos Prates at UFC Rio de Janeiro
CHICAGO – To many, the idea of fighting dangerous striker Carlos Prates in his home country of Brazil might not be too appealing. However, it is for Michael Page. Both Page and Prates competed and won at Saturday's UFC 319 with Page outpointing veteran Jared Cannonier at 185 pounds, and Prates viciously knocking out Geoff Neal at welterweight. After Prates's finish, the Brazilian called for a spot on the UFC Fight Night event scheduled to go down in Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 11, which UFC CEO Dana WHite said he'd grant. The missing piece here is a willing dance partner, but Page is more than willing to fill that role. "100 percent, 100 percent," Page said at the UFC 319 post-fight press conference when asked if he'd be down to fight Prates. "You're not hitting me with that spinning elbow, I'm telling you that right now. But yeah, 100 percent, that's a great fight. It's those kinds of fights that I want, those kinds of fights I'm calling on. If he's happy, I'll happily put my hand up, and I would love to go to Brazil. I've had fans in Brazil for many years. I remember being called the 'U.K. Anderson Silva,' which is a massive compliment. I have a load of fans in Brazil, and I still haven't managed to get over there." Although the event is not too far away, that's no problem for Page. Despite fighting the full 15 minutes, unlike Prates, who got a first-round finish, Page said he's healthy and ready to prep for a fight. "No damage – no real damage," Page said. "A little sore leg slightly, but that's normal when people try to go for your legs and stuff, kicking your legs. Nothing. I'll be fine in a week. That sounds good to me."

Baisangur Susurkaev says he'll be middleweight champ within two years after UFC 319
CHICAGO – Baisangur Susurkaev met with MMA Junkie and other media members Saturday after his win over Tom Nolan at UFC 319. Susurkaev (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) got put through some first-round adversity to close out the preliminary card at United Center in Chicago, but ultimately made good on his massive pre-fight betting odds as a more than 10-1 favorite in the middleweight bout against Nolan (9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) when he tapped him with a second-round rear-naked choke. Susurkaev was making his UFC debut, but it came only four days after he won a fight – and the adoration of UFC CEO Dana White – on DWCS to earn a contract. He said he wanted to be on UFC 319 as an undercard fight for his countryman Khamzat Chimaev, and White obliged. Then Susurkaev obliged with his second win in four days. And that DWCS bout? That one came on four days' notice, as well, as a fill-in. Now that Susurkaev has made a big name for himself early, he doesn't want to slow down too much. He's eyeing one more fight this year – and maybe a second. "I'm hoping for New York (in November). I really would like to fight in September, but I do feel like I have an injury in my foot, so I don't know if I'll be ready in time," Susurkaev said. But he knows the trajectory he wants to take. And even though Chimaev won the middleweight title a few fights after Susurkaev won his bout, he plans on having that belt one day, too. Chimaev has had high praise for Susurkaev, as well – and even said the 24-year-old fighter is better than him. "I don't think he really means it when he says it," Susurkaev said. "Of course I'm not better than him. He's the best. "In two more years, I'm going to be champion. I don't need it fast. One month, two months to get ready for the next fight, and I'm ready.
