Up Next: Ride-Easy Plan To Decongest NH-5

Time of Indiaa day ago
Chandigarh: In a bid to address growing traffic congestion on National Highway 5 (NH-5), the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has invited bids to appoint a consultant for detailed study of a 4.5-kilometre stretch from Hallomajra Roundabout to the Chandigarh boundary in Zirakpur.
This initiative marks the second phase of the central government's efforts to decongest one of the busiest corridors in the region.
The ministry has informed the Chandigarh administration about invitation of bids to hire a consultant. Sources said that the selected consultant will also advice the ministry on the most suitable method of easing traffic on the 4.5-kilometre stretch. Such measures could include a flyover or underpass.
Besides, heritage considerations will also have to be kept in mind.
"We have received information that the ministry of road transport and highways has started the process of hiring the consultant by inviting bids for the plan to decongest NH 5 till the Zirakpur boundary from Hallomajra or Poultry Farm roundabout. The Chandigarh administration will provide support to the consultant as per requirement. Information about the exact time frame of the study and DPR is yet to be received but it seems that after allotment of work, it may take six to eight months to complete the exercise.

The report will be submitted to the ministry for a decision. The study will not be confined to a flyover but will also assess the possibility of an underpass," a senior official of the Chandigarh administration told TOI.
Experts believe that approval of the Rs 240 crore flyover at sectors 29/31/Industrial Area Phase 1 and Phase 2 will ease traffic at Hallomajra or Poultry Farm roundabout. The exercise to decongest traffic from Hallomajra or Poultry Farm roundabout to the Punjab border will come as additional relief for commuters.
Box: Heritage considerations
Since the Chandigarh Master Plan 2031 does not recommend bridges and flyovers in the city due to heritage considerations, sources in the Chandigarh administration said that the consultant will have to keep this aspect in mind while preparing the DPR to ease traffic till the end of the Chandigarh boundary. "Approval for the Rs 240 crore flyover was delayed repeatedly in past. In the second phase exercise, the ministry and Chandigarh administration will have to keep all aspects in mind while planning any flyover or underpass to decongest traffic till the Chandigarh boundary," sources said.

Oben Rorr EZ Sigma launched at ₹1.27 lakh with smart features, fast charge

EV startup Oben Electric has launched the Rorr EZ Sigma, its latest electric motorcycle targeted at urban commuters, at an introductory price of Rs 1.27 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 3.4 kWh variant. The 4.4 kWh variant is priced at Rs 1.37 lakh. These prices are valid for a limited period, after which they will rise to Rs 1.47 lakh and Rs 1.55 lakh, respectively. Positioned as a next-generation commuter motorcycle, the Rorr EZ Sigma features hardware and software upgrades over the earlier Rorr EZ model. Key additions include a reverse mode, a 5-inch TFT display with built-in navigation, trip meter, and real-time alerts for calls, messages, and music. Oben has also introduced ergonomic changes such as a redesigned seat and new colour schemes. The Oben Rorr EZ Sigma will compete with a growing field of electric motorcycles and premium electric scooters aimed at urban commuters. In the electric motorcycle category, its closest rivals include the Revolt RV400, priced around Rs 1.39 lakh (ex-showroom, varying by state subsidies), offering a range of approximately 150 km, a top speed of 85 km/h, and features such as a swappable battery and artificial engine sound. Another contender is the Hop Oxo, priced in the Rs 1.35 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh range, delivering up to 150 km range and 90 km/h top speed, targeting younger, style-focused urban buyers. The model is powered by Oben's in-house LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery technology, which the company claims offers greater temperature tolerance and lifespan. Both variants deliver a top speed of 95 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 40 km/h in 3.3 seconds. The IDC-certified range is up to 175 km, with three ride modes – Eco, City, and Havoc – and fast-charging support (0–80 per cent in 1.5 hours). Madhumita Agrawal, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Oben Electric, said, 'The launch of Rorr EZ Sigma represents a decisive step forward in our journey to shape the future of city commuting. With this model, we've gone beyond incremental upgrades to address the deeper expectations of today's commuter, combining intelligence, comfort, and reliability in a motorcycle that's built for India.' Bookings have opened at Rs 2,999, with deliveries scheduled to begin on 15 August. Test rides are currently available at Oben Electric showrooms nationwide. The vehicle is also being made available via Amazon. The Rorr EZ Sigma includes safety and connectivity features such as Unified Brake Assist, geo-fencing, battery theft lock, and a Driver Alert System. Riders will also get a one-year subscription to the updated Oben Electric app, which offers GPS-based location tracking, remote diagnostics, ride analytics, and charging station discovery across a claimed network of over 68,000 stations. The company is also offering an optional 'Battery Protect 8/80' warranty plan at Rs 9,999, covering eight years or 80,000 km. Oben manufactures the Rorr EZ Sigma in-house and says it has streamlined distribution to reduce delivery timelines.

Sundaram Midcap Fund clocks 24.1% CAGR over 23 years since its launch

Sundaram Mutual Fund's midcap scheme, Sundaram Midcap Fund, has completed 23 years, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.10 per cent since its launch, the fund house said in a statement. Sundaram Asset Management Company, a major player in the fund management space with a retail focus, had assets under management (AUM) of Rs 73,405 crore. Along with its subsidiary Sundaram Alternate Assets Ltd (SAAL), the AUM stood at Rs 80,463 crore as on 30 June 2025. The statement said that over the 23-year period starting in July 2002, the fund has emerged as a strong compounder. A Rs 1 lakh investment at the time of launch would be worth approximately Rs 1.4 crore now, delivering a CAGR of 24.1 per cent. Similarly, a monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) of Rs 10,000, totalling Rs 27.5 lakh over the same period, would now be worth around Rs 4.71 crore with an extended internal rate of return (XIRR) of 20.7 per cent, it said. 'At the heart of the fund's success is a consistent focus on businesses with scalable growth, passionate leadership, and strong financials. We aim to stay invested in companies that can outpace their industries through cycles,' said Bharath S, Head – Equities, Sundaram Mutual. Over the years, while the strategy has evolved to reflect India's formalising and consolidating economy, the fund's core belief in identifying high-growth midcap businesses early has remained unchanged. A balanced blend of near-term visibility and long-term structural levers — backed by appropriate position sizing — has been key to navigating volatility, it added. 'Risk controls remain a hallmark of the strategy, with active monitoring of liquidity, stock exposure limits, and portfolio concentration. This has helped the fund manage downside effectively during uncertain market conditions,' the statement said. As of 30 June, the asset management business closed the year with assets under management of Rs 80,501 crore (over 80 per cent in equity), and consolidated profits from the asset management businesses stood at Rs 45 crore in Q1FY26, compared to Rs 29 crore in Q1FY25. The company is part of Sundaram Finance, established in 1954. It has today grown into one of the most trusted and diversified financial services groups in India, providing financing for commercial vehicles, cars and utility vehicles, tractors and farm equipment, construction equipment, SME finance, and a range of working capital products for financing diesel, tyres, insurance, as well as working capital for SMEs. Through its subsidiaries and group companies, the company offers home finance, loans against property, mutual funds and investment management solutions, and the full range of general insurance products and services. It has a nationwide presence of over 700 branches, over 100,000 depositors, and over 500,000 lending customers.
