KUCHING (May 21): A total of 758,483 out of the 886,288 eligible recipients for the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) have received assistance via the S Pay Global e-wallet, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He stated that as of May 13, around 85 per cent of eligible Sarawakians have received the assistance, which covers three categories: households, singles, and senior citizens.
'Among the recipients, 94 per cent or 387,260 from the household category have received the assistance, followed by 80 per cent or 287,0458 from the single category, and 74 per cent or 114,464 from the senior citizen category,' he said.
He was responding to Royston Valentine (GPS-Tellian), who raised questions about the number of SKAS recipients to date, by category and the measures in place for those without access to smartphones or the application.
On the efforts to include eligible individuals who were left out of the original name list, Uggah said the government had allowed them to submit appeals within a specified period.
'We opened an appeal period from Feb 1 to March 31, 2025.
'Once their names are verified and included in the list, the assistance will be disbursed to them through the e-wallet.'
He added that an additional allocation of RM100.7 million has been requested to ensure that all eligible individuals who were previously excluded will receive the assistance they are entitled to.
To ensure that assistance is fully disbursed to SKAS recipients, Uggah also said the state government will continue to assist them in activating their respective S Pay Global applications.
'For any technical support related to S Pay Global, users may contact S Pay Global Customer Service via email at [email protected] or by calling 082-224599.
'They may also seek assistance at Sarawak Service Centres, District Offices, and ADUN Service Centres in their respective areas.' douglas uggah embas DUN s pay global SKAS

Sarawak business owner proudly flies national flag

Doing it right: Liew, putting up the Jalur Gemilang at the family's business at India Street, Kuching. — ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star KUCHING: For Bernard Liew, displaying the Jalur Gemilang as part of National Day celebrations is an act of patriotism. 'It's all about the Merdeka spirit. We're proud to be Malaysians. 'We're also proud to be Sarawakians who live together in harmony and mutual respect,' he said. Liew was putting up a new flag to replace an older one at his family's business premises at India Street here. It's their practice every year to put up the Jalur Gemilang alongside the Sarawak state flag for National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations. Liew, 38, said it was important to put up the flag correctly but added that mistakes should not become a controversy. He said that Merdeka month was a time for celebrating together, not politicising unintentional mistakes. 'If I happen to see a flag that is displayed wrongly, I will remind the person to put it up the correct way. 'There's no need to turn it into something controversial,' he said. Liew added that the Jalur Gemilang's star and crescent should be at the top when putting up the flag. 'The flag should have 14 stripes and the star has 14 points,' he said.

Call on Nadma to provide more Bailey bridges for Sarawak as standby facilities in emergencies

He said this was crucial so the state government is prepared to respond in the event of bridges or roads being cut off or collapsed during disasters. 'To date, Sarawak through the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has received three Bailey bridges from Nadma – one was received earlier in January in Miri, which was installed at Sungai Bale, Long Banga in Bario and today we received two units, which will be installed in Baram. 'These bridges are helpful in our efforts to repair bridges that were damaged last year,' he said in a press conference after the 'Handover Ceremony of Modular Steel Bridges' and 'Launch of the Senari Port Vehicle Yard' at Senari Port here yesterday. Meanwhile, Uggah said over 200 bridges and routes across Sarawak have been identified as needing repair or replacements, with 19 projects already tendered and 10 more to be tendered under Public Work Department (JKR) and Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) programmes. He said these locations included Baram, Kakus, Skrang, several locations in Belaga and Murum, and the identification process came after a 15-hour journey from Miri to Bario to assess the condition of bridges in the area. 'Many of the bridges, especially temporary ones built by logging companies in the past, are no longer structurally sound and are now in a very dilapidated state.' Uggah said the state government had decided to take over village roads, former logging roads and some active timber roads in the area to convert them into state roads, so that Malaysia Road Records Information System (Marris) allocations can be used for maintenance. Also present were MIPD deputy ministers Datuk Aidel Lariwoo and Dato Majang Renggi; Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala; and Nadma director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah. bailey bridge Douglas Uggah Embas emergency situations Nadma

Hope Place representative Yong Tiong Yieng (left) with Voon and her daughter during a delivery of supplies. KUCHING (Aug 5): Hope Place Kuching is providing basic food aid to a single mother of two struggling to make ends meet. The non-profit organisation recently visited Voon Mei Fong, 47, who lives in Demak Laut here. During the visit, Voon shared that her marriage fell apart as she strove to escape from domestic abuse. However, she was grateful her children aged six and 11 did not go through any abuse. As she has no transport, Voon aspires to find a job which does not require her to travel far. Presently, she is unemployed. 'Since her separation from her husband, Voon's elder sister has been supporting her as much as she could. However, with Voon being unable to secure a stable income, the burden is too much,' said Hope Place. Voon said her in-laws have been helping to send the children to school every day, and the house they are staying in belongs to her in-laws. 'But financially, Voon and her children still face an uncertain future,' it added. Donations can be made via Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160) or the S Pay Global QR code available on its Facebook page. Receipts will be issued upon request.
