KUCHING (Aug 6): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas urged the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to provide more modular steel bridges (Bailey bridges) to Sarawak to be kept as standby facilities.
He said this was crucial so the state government is prepared to respond in the event of bridges or roads being cut off or collapsed during disasters.
'To date, Sarawak through the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has received three Bailey bridges from Nadma – one was received earlier in January in Miri, which was installed at Sungai Bale, Long Banga in Bario and today we received two units, which will be installed in Baram.
'These bridges are helpful in our efforts to repair bridges that were damaged last year,' he said in a press conference after the 'Handover Ceremony of Modular Steel Bridges' and 'Launch of the Senari Port Vehicle Yard' at Senari Port here yesterday.
Meanwhile, Uggah said over 200 bridges and routes across Sarawak have been identified as needing repair or replacements, with 19 projects already tendered and 10 more to be tendered under Public Work Department (JKR) and Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) programmes.
He said these locations included Baram, Kakus, Skrang, several locations in Belaga and Murum, and the identification process came after a 15-hour journey from Miri to Bario to assess the condition of bridges in the area.
'Many of the bridges, especially temporary ones built by logging companies in the past, are no longer structurally sound and are now in a very dilapidated state.'
Uggah said the state government had decided to take over village roads, former logging roads and some active timber roads in the area to convert them into state roads, so that Malaysia Road Records Information System (Marris) allocations can be used for maintenance.
Also present were MIPD deputy ministers Datuk Aidel Lariwoo and Dato Majang Renggi; Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala; and Nadma director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah. bailey bridge Douglas Uggah Embas emergency situations Nadma

Sarawak receives 3 Bailey bridges from Nadma to boost rural connectivity, disaster response

Completed Bailey bridge across Sungai Tutoh, opened before Christmas 2023. MIRI (Aug 13): Sarawak has received three Bailey bridges from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to boost rural connectivity and disaster response, according to the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR). One of the modular prefabricated steel bridges is currently being installed to replace a collapsed bridge in Long Banga. The other two, which were officially handed over during a ceremony at the Senari Port on August 5, remain on standby for emergencies. According to a statement on JKR Sarawak's official Facebook page, the initiative reflects the cooperation between Nadma and the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to enhance preparedness and enable rapid disaster response. 'JKR Sarawak is responsible for the implementation of construction and installation of these bridges to restore access and amenities for affected communities,' the department said. The portable, prefabricated truss bridge – first developed during World War II for military use – is renowned for its quick assembly, high load capacity, and adaptability to civilian purposes, including replacing damaged or washed-out bridges. Its design allows assembly without specialised tools or heavy equipment, making it invaluable in restoring rural lifelines in Sarawak following floods or other disasters, which have become more frequent in recent years. The move comes after recent tragedies and repeated infrastructure losses due to natural disasters in rural Sarawak. The urgency for such infrastructure was underscored by a tragic incident earlier this year when a primary school teacher from SK Long Jekitan and his nine-year-old daughter drowned after their four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle was swept away by strong currents in Baram. They were attempting to cross Sungai Sengayan in Ulu Baram after a bridge damaged in an earlier flood had yet to be replaced. In another case, a flood in 2021 destroyed a bridge across Sungai Tutoh on the road to Long Seridan in Ulu Tutoh, Baram. The replacement permanent bridge was completed and opened to the public before Christmas in 2023. Bailey bridges miri Nadma rural

Rewilding project at Sg Lemidin signifies long-term mangrove restoration

Len Talif steals a glance at the camera while planting a tree during the ceremony at Sungai Lemidin, held to mark the launch of SFC's 'mangrove rewilding' project. — Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (July 29): Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has launched an on-the-ground 'mangrove rewilding' project at Sungai Lemidin in Kuching Wetland National Park, which will involve the planting of 2,000 mangrove trees across two hectares of degraded wetland area. The initiative is part of the corporation's long-term plan to restore the vital mangrove ecosystems and also to strengthen Sarawak's environmental resilience against climate change. According to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh, the restoration project reflects the state's commitment to safeguarding biodiversity, while promoting sustainable development. 'This effort shows what we can achieve through cooperation and long-term planning. 'Our natural heritage is a valuable asset, and it is our responsibility to restore and protect it for future generations,' he told reporters after officiating at a tree-planting ceremony, meant to mark the launch yesterday. Len Talif also said that the project launch was held in connection with the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, observed annually on July 26. 'The date highlights the importance of mangrove forests in supporting marine life, protecting shorelines and serving as natural carbon sinks.' Meanwhile, in a press statement, SFC stated that this rewilding effort meant to be aligned with Sarawak Biodiversity Master Plan, which was launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg earlier this year. 'The plan was developed in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malaysia and outlines a whole-of-government approach to biodiversity conservation.' SFC also said that the project meant to support Sarawak's Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which places environmental sustainability and green growth among its key development pillars. 'Mangrove restoration contributes to these goals by improving biodiversity, creating green jobs and building ecological resilience in vulnerable coastal regions. 'It will continue to monitor the restoration site and explore the expansion of similar efforts to other suitable locations across the state. 'The initiative is also supported by Mubadala Energy through a collaboration agreement signed in November last year,' said SFC.
