VeeFriends, Bowman Baseball Highlight Big Week in Card Releases
Hey Collectors,
On Monday night our friends at Wheelhouse hosted an event here in LA, and the crew from Goldin came packing heat! Among the items they had on display? A signed check from Abe Lincoln, a pair of game-used Reebok Pumps worn by Shaq, a copy of Superman #1 and a T206 Honus Wagner . Museum pieces, all of them.

I don't have T206-level money, and security was watching me like a hawk, so I guess I'm going to have to keep ripping packs, hoping to hit something big the old fashioned way.
Good thing there were a few big card releases just yesterday…
Yesterday Topps Chrome VeeFriends, created by Gary Vaynerchuk, hit shelves (and sold out within minutes). The set is headlined by the ultra-rare ERUPT! cards. With odds as steep as 1 in 3,000 hobby packs—and 1 in 9,000 for blasters—these chase cards are among the rarest in the set, featuring high-end parallels like Black Lava (/10) and Superfractor 1/1s. The launch marks a major step in VeeFriends' evolution from digital NFT to tangible collectible, blending scarcity, storytelling, and artistic impact, and with Hobby Boxes selling for 2x retail, early interest is as strong as Alpha Alligator .
Also releasing yesterday? 2025 Bowman Baseball, and this year Topps included a new element, with the Red Rookie program. These special cards, marked with a red RC logo, unlock prizes if the featured player wins a major award—like Rookie of the Year—or eventually reaches the Hall of Fame. It's a long game, but there's real short-term upside. Using data compiled by Max Arterburn from Prospects Live , Mike Metzler narrowed the 30-player checklist to just four with real ROY potential in 2025: Jackson Jobe, Jacob Wilson, Roki Sasaki, and Dylan Crews. Pull a Red RC of the player who wins this year's ROY, and you'll be in line for $100 from Topps. A $1,000 prize can be yours if the player ends up in the Hall, but you'll have to wait a while to cash in.
Caitlin Clark's cultural and collectible dominance continues into 2025, with the return of her Crunch Time cereal to all Hy-Vee locations across the Midwest. Originally launched in Iowa in 2024 and flipped for five times retail on eBay, the limited-edition cereal still commands $20–$30 per box on the secondary market. With all of Clark's proceeds going to her foundation, the product exemplifies the blend of star power, scarcity, and social impact driving her market appeal. However, for all of the posts and stories we read about this cereal, not ONE mentioned how Crunch Time tastes…
Following a record-breaking 2024 season (led, in part, by Crunch Time Cereal's Caitlin Clark), the WNBA's 2025 rookie class enters a booming collectibles market fueled by rising viewership, historic attendance, and increased demand for women's sports cards. Headlined by No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers—whose Bowman 1st PSA 10s are already surging—this class includes international standout Dominique Malonga, high-scoring forward Kiki Iriafen, versatile guard Sonia Citron, and media-savvy Hailey Van Lith. With the WNBA preseason now underway, we'll start seeing which of these rookies will dominate on the court and in the card market.
For the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, Formula One swapped its usual driver parade truck for full-size, drivable F1 cars made entirely out of Lego bricks — a first-of-its-kind spectacle born from F1's growing partnership with Lego. Each of the 10 life-size cars required around 400,000 bricks and was constructed over three weeks at Lego's 'big builds' factory in the Czech Republic, complete with electric powertrains, hydraulic brakes, and custom steering systems. Designed to carry two drivers, the cars, of course, also featured fully accurate team liveries and sponsor details. Can't forget that Visa logo!

James Gunn Might've Just Teased Story Details for His Superman Sequel — GeekTyrant
A now private behind the scenes video called Adventures in the Making of Superman briefly showcased Gunn's rough storyboards at the 2:18 mark. In them, Superman, Supergirl, and Krypto are seen flying together. Below them? A panel featuring a bald head covered in lightbulb-like nodes, a not-so-subtle tease that longtime fans will recognize as Brainiac. Even if that image wasn't meant to spoil anything, or if they were early storyboards, it's clear Gunn has been thinking about Brainiac for a while. He even admitted he considered using the iconic villain in Superman before deciding on Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult. For those unfamiliar, Brainiac is one of Superman's most formidable foes. Created in 1958 by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, he's evolved over the decades, sometimes depicted as a green alien, other times as a highly advanced AI or cyborg. No matter the version, Brainiac is all about acquiring knowledge, usually by shrinking cities from across the universe and bottling them like cosmic souvenirs. One of those cities is the Kryptonian capital, Kandor. If Superman gave us Lex Luthor, Brainiac is the logical next step. The villain's never made it to live-action film, which is wild considering his status. That's like The Riddler not showing up in any Batman movie until now. But Brainiac's debut might come with emotional weight. In the 2008 Superman: Brainiac comic by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, Superman and Supergirl manage to defeat Brainiac, but not before Jonathan Kent suffers a fatal heart attack while Clark is off saving the world. If Gunn is pulling from this story, we could be headed toward a tearjerker moment. Superman is now available on home release, and Supergirl will hit theaters on June 26, 2026. As for the sequel? We'll just have to wait and see what Gunn has got planned.

Omaha forward Deng Mayar, 22, dies in drowning
Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Omaha's Deng Mayar, a 22-year-old forward who recently transferred from North Dakota, died during a weekend drowning in Herriman, Utah, police announced. "Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng's passing," Mavericks men's basketball coach Chris Crutchfield said in a news release. "After competing against him for two years, we were elated to add him to our team and he made tremendous progress this summer. Deng was a joy to be around and made our culture better. "We will miss him greatly. Jodi and I, along with our entire program, send our hearts and prayers to Deng's family, friends and teammates." The Herriman Police Department said Sunday in a news release that officers responded to a 911 call at 5:40 p.m. local time Saturday at Blackridge Reservoir, with reports of two individuals in distress. "Sa Mafutaga, 21, was able to make it to shore, but saw that Deng Ador (Mayar), was still struggling in the water," police said. "Mafutaga reentered the reservoir in an attempt to assist [Mayar] but was unable to do so. Bystanders then entered the water to aid Mafutaga, who was treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital by Unified Fire Authority. He is expected to recover." Police said Mayar went underwater about 35 yards from the shore. Unified Fire Authority and the South Jordan Fire Department water rescue teams started search efforts. The Utah Highway Patrol dive team's submersible robot found Mayar at 10:40 p.m. He was recovered by divers about 20 minutes later, but was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation and the Blackridge Reservoir will remain closed until further notice. Mayar appeared in 42 games, including 15 starts, over the last two years at North Dakota. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last season. The Magna, Utah, native is survived by his parents and six siblings. "We are devastated to learn of Deng's passing," University of Nebraska at Omaha chancellor Joanne Li and athletic director Adrian Dowell said. "On behalf of our university community, our love and sincere condolences are with his family during this difficult time. We also wish his friends and teammates in Omaha, North Dakota, and Salt Lake City family, peace as they process this tragic loss."
