Director Gopi Puthran opens up about the overwhelming success of Mandala Murders, now the No. 1 Netflix series in India and among the global Top 10 non-English shows.
YRF Entertainment's psychological crime drama Mandala Murders is riding high on critical acclaim and audience love. The series has stormed to the top of the Netflix India charts, becoming the No. 1 trending show in the country. Not just that, it has also broken into the global Top 10 in the non-English series category on the platform — a major feat for a homegrown thriller.
The man behind this success, director and creator Gopi Puthran, is understandably thrilled. Speaking about the overwhelming response, Puthran shared, 'Originality of imagination has been the cornerstone for content that breaks out. From Mardaani to Mandala Murders, I have tried to do something new, and I've been empowered to push the envelope with every single project at YRF. I'm delighted with the response that Mandala Murders is getting from the audience."
Calling the show 'risky" and 'ambitious," Puthran revealed that he set out to build a show that would challenge the viewer's mind and perceptions. 'I wanted to create a binge-able, mind-bending, genre-defying series with Mandala Murders. It was risky and very ambitious, and I'm very happy to see the initial response to the series," he said.
A self-confessed fan of psychological thrillers, Gopi says the idea for Mandala Murders came from his love for dark, moody dramas that blur the line between reality and imagination. 'I'm a big fan of crime dramas that leave you on the edge of what is real, what is imagination and what is occult — if it exists in today's world," he explained.
He cited shows like True Detective, The Sinner, Twin Peaks, and Sharp Objects as inspirations. 'They explore how the mind can push people to the edge of belief and disbelief. If Mandala Murders is doing that to audiences in India with a story and a concept rooted in our culture, it is truly delightful."
With strong performances, a haunting narrative, and visual storytelling that challenges convention, Mandala Murders is quickly cementing itself as a must-watch in India's evolving streaming landscape. Yatamanyu Narain

Shabana Azmi, Rajesh Khanna worked with incomplete scripts during Nasihat shoot, Kader Khan was writing in another studio: ‘We didn't know when the second page would come'

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi and late actor Rajesh Khanna collaborated on several films, including Avtaar (1983), Amar Deep (1979), and the 1986 action drama Nasihat. In a recent interview, Shabana shared an anecdote from the sets of Nasihat that highlighted the stark contrast between working in mainstream commercial cinema and the more structured world of parallel cinema. In a recent interview with Chanda Kochhar, Shabana Azmi opened up about her film Nasihat and said, 'There was a time when Rajesh Khanna and I were working in a film and we were doing the first page of a scene, and we didn't know when the second page would come. Because it was being written by Kader Khan in another studio. He was an actor, but he was also writing this. So, when that page would come, then we'd know where it's going.' She further recalled how parallel cinema required a complete script because of the small budgets. 'A lot has changed. But, I had got a taste of this even earlier while working in Shyam Benegal's films – films that are referred to as art cinema or parallel cinema. Their budgets were so small that they had to have a complete script. They couldn't just go along ki ab paisa milega, ab karo. They had to be prepared about everything. So, that has helped me,' the 74-year-old added. 'Shooting for 'Chalo Bulaawa Aaya Hai' for Avtaar was filled with hardships. During those days, there were no helicopter services, we had to trek to reach the temple. There were no toilets on the way. It was an extremely difficult situation,' she said. The actor continued, 'Can you imagine Rajesh Khanna, a superstar, standing in queue with Dalda dabbas? It was also extremely cold at that time. We used to sleep on floors in dharamshalas. We had mattresses with about 12 layers of blankets. We used six layers of blanket to cover ourselves, and we were still cold. At that point in time, Rajesh Khanna couldn't be like 'I am a superstar'. We all did it in the spirit.' On the work front, Shabana Azmi was last seen in the Netflix web series Dabba Cartel and will next appear in the film Lahore 1947.

Fuji Singer KWAM 1 Placed on No-Fly List After Airport Drama Unfolds

Last Updated: The drama unfolded during boarding for a flight to Lagos on Tuesday when aviation security personnel asked KWAM 1 to hand over a flask, suspecting it contained alcohol Popular Nigerian fuji singer King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, has been placed on the country's no-fly list following a dramatic confrontation at Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The directive, issued by Nigerian Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, comes after KWAM 1 allegedly blocked a ValueJet aircraft from taxiing on the tarmac. The drama unfolded during boarding for a flight to Lagos on Tuesday when aviation security personnel asked KWAM 1 to hand over a flask, suspecting it contained alcohol. The singer reportedly refused and allegedly spilled the contents—later confirmed as alcohol—on one of the officers. He was subsequently deboarded. Video footage circulating on social media, including one shared by Keyamo, shows KWAM 1 attempting to physically obstruct the aircraft as it began to move. The singer had to crouch to avoid being struck by the plane's wing. In a social media post on X Thursday, Keyamo confirmed that the singer stood in front of the aircraft on the tarmac, blocking its taxiing, after being denied boarding. Keyamo condemned the entire episode as 'a case of temporary loss of sanity and control on both sides," and likened KWAM 1's behaviour to a hostage situation. 'From all the details so far received, my preliminary impression is that it was obviously a case of temporary loss of sanity and control on both sides which could have led to serious fatalities," the Nigerian minister noted. Keyamo further emphasised that whether the flask contained water or alcohol was irrelevant compared to the seriousness of blocking an aircraft. 'It is the physical blockage of the aircraft from taxiing that is the reprehensible conduct here which akin to a hostage situation," he added. Following the incident, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority also suspended the licences of both the captain and pilot involved. KWAM 1 is an iconic figure in southwest Nigeria, renowned for his traditional fuji music—a genre rooted in the Yoruba community. He is also a close affiliate of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, having performed at numerous party rallies and the presidential inaugural ball in May 2023.
