'We tested the best family hatchback cars on sale – there was one clear winner'

Daily Mirror13-05-2025

A group of car experts have tested every family hatchback on sale and come to a verdict over the best one for a family to buy
Choosing the right car for your family is an important decision, one that is far more complicated than it first appears. Not only must the car be big, it must be affordable, practical, robust, and economical.
The calculation is complicated somewhat if the buyer simply does not want an SUV. If that is the case, then choice is rather thinner on the ground.

Fortunately, there are still some cars out there which are fit for the family, but don't come with enough ground clearance to conquer the Paris-Dakar or the Himalayas.

A group of car experts from renowned motoring publication Top Gear have compiled a list of the top five hatchbacks – cars with a literal hatch at the rear of the car – which are perfect for family ownership.
At the top of their list was the Honda Civic. Priced from between £35,005 and £39,805, the Honda won out for it's economy, practicality, and the fact it was fun to drive.
The experts explained: 'It might be conservative on the outside, but the interior is simply put together and to a high standard. You won't mind long family journeys, and you know that it'll all last for miles and miles.
'There's a strangely complex hybrid setup under the bonnet, but you needn't worry about all that, because the upshot is that the car drives and handles well enough, but won't cost you the earth in petrol bills.'

Coming in second was the Skoda Octavia, which in turn beat the car it's based on, the eighth generation VW Golf, into second with it's German cousin completing the podium in third.
Commenting on the Skoda, the experts remarked: 'There must be a few noses out of join the darkest corporate depths of the VW Group – of the host of cars based on the MkVIII Golf, the Skoda's the best.'
However, they didn't completely rule out the VW Golf despite what they described as a slip in recent years. They ruminated: 'Long the benchmark in this sector, the crown has slipped a little in this eighth generation guise. We wouldn't count the Golf out for long though.'

Although the Honda, Skoda, and VW would make fine family car options, there are still plenty of cars out there if an SUV body shape is a must have. Earlier this year car expert Mike Brewer highlighted one car that stood above the rest as his top pic for those looking for a family SUV.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mike explained why he thought it should be the Nissan X-Trail. He said: 'Just look at it from the exterior, it's got the privacy glass, it's got the roof rails, it's got the chrome door handles, the chrome accents, it looks really smart.
"It's got electric folding mirrors so as you open the car, get in and turn the ignition on the mirrors fold out, which is lovely.
'Leather door cards inside your family car, nice and easy to wipe, absolutely wonderful leather seats. It's got lumber support as well, you've got cupholders everywhere. These Nissan X-Trails are really well equipped."

Dean Harrison clinches maiden Superstock victory with scorching 135mph lap: ‘I'm over the moon'

Harrison was willed on by thousands of fans desperate to see him return to the top step of the podium after a series of near-misses. The Bradford rider, who lives on the island, finished third in Monday's Superbike race and second in the opening Supersport race after leading on the first two laps, but Harrison finally emerged on top. He produced a red-hot final lap of 135.692mph in the shortened two-lap race to take over from Davey Todd (8TEN Racing BMW) and never relinquished his advantage. The 36-year-old was ahead at Glen Helen on lap two by 2.3s and Harrison continued to stretch his lead further to five seconds at Ramsey. He won by 11.656s from Todd, with Michael Dunlop taking third on his MD Racing BMW, 20 seconds further down. 'I've been trying and trying, and everyone will tell you how hard it is to win a TT – to get on the podium is hard enough, never mind win one,' said Harrison. 'It's been a tough week and I've been a bit up and down but I've had a three, two and now one. 'Everyone was waving their arms over the fence and spurring me on and I was digging deeper and deeper as they were waving at me more. 'I just rode as hard as I could, read my boards and I'm over the moon with that. 'I got stuck behind Davo [David Johnson] a little bit on lap one going through Glen Helen, so I was held up a little bit there, but to be fair we've worked so hard all week with Honda and to give Honda a TT win – I'm over the moon,' he added. 'I keep saying that the Fireblade is so fast and we're making the bike better and better every time, and 135mph on a 'stocker is good going.' Dunlop said a problem with the electronics on his BMW didn't help his cause as he sought a first Superstock win since 2014. 'My electronic sensor jammed and I don't know if we've got a gremlin in the bike, but the blipper was working and then sometimes not working,' he said. 'With places so fast here you can't afford not to know if it's working or not.' James Hillier (Muc-Off Honda) was fourth, with Ian Hutchinson (MLav Racing BMW) and Conor Cummins (Burrows/RK Racing BMW) the first six. Former Honda Racing rider Nathan Harrison maintained his fine form with a solid ride to seventh on the H&H Motorcycles Honda ahead Dominic Herbertson (HRRC Adam Hewitt Ltd Honda). Paul Jordan was 12th on the Jackson Racing Honda.

Honda's Harrison claims first TT win in six years

Dean Harrison won his first Isle of Man TT race since 2019 with victory in the Superstock TT on Tuesday. Honda rider Harrison overhauled Superbike TT winner Davey Todd in the two-lap sprint around the 37.7 mile course to win by 11.656 seconds. The race had been due take place on Tuesday afternoon but wet weather postponed the race until the evening and also saw it reduced to two Dunlop, who won the Supersport race on Monday, finished in third. "I got the hammer down from the start," Harrison told TT Plus."I really dug deep and the bike was really good. I've been third and second, so to get another TT win is magic. "I can't thank the team enough. It's been a long time coming, I've over the moon." With a two-lap race and no pit stops, emphasis was placed on a fast start and it was Todd who set the early pace. The BMW rider led by 0.2 seconds by Glen Helen over Harrison, with James Hillier just ahead of Nathan Harrison and Dunlop in third. Todd's lead was up to a second at Ballaugh, and he doubled his advantage by the time he reached the Bungalow. However, it was over the Mountain that Harrison started to chip away at Todd's advantage. The Yorkshire rider pulled back a second-and-a-half to end the lap just 0.4 seconds behind heading onto the second and final lap. Harrison found 2.3 seconds on Todd in the first sector to Glen Helen, and from there he didn't look back as he moved 3.2 seconds clear by Ballaugh Bridge. As Todd battled traffic, Harrison, with clean road in front of him, was able to extend his lead to five seconds by Ramsey Hairpin, and the final margin was 11 seconds. His final lap of 135.692mph was more than enough to claim his fourth victory at the Isle of Man TT and the popularity of his victory was evident by the cheers in the winners' enclosure as he crossed the line. It was a first win for Honda in the Superstock race since Dunlop triumphed in held on to third after battling an electronic issue on his BMW.
