US: S&P 500, Nasdaq end at records after benign inflation data

Business Times19 hours ago
[NEW YORK] Wall Street stocks surged to fresh records on Tuesday after US data showed stable inflation despite worries over President Donald Trump's tariffs, lifting expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.
Major indices spent the entire session in positive territory, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq finishing at fresh records.
'We're in a bull market,' said Adam Sarhan of 50 Park Investments. 'The bulls are strong and getting stronger.'
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 1.1 per cent at 44,458.61.
The broad-based S&P 500 also gained 1.1 per cent to 6,445.76, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.4 per cent to 21,681.90.
The consumer price index rose 2.7 per cent from a year ago in July, the same rate as in June.

While 'core' inflation stripping out volatile food and energy segments accelerated from the month before, analysts described the report as largely in line with expectations.
Analysts said the report confirmed expectations for a Fed interest rate cut, after the latest jobs data pointed to weakening in the labour market.
'Nothing potentially blocks the Fed from likely cutting interest rates in September though we still have one more inflation reading before that and one more jobs report,' said Angelo Kourkafas, senior global investment strategist from Edward Jones.
Kourkafas said it was still likely 'premature' to conclude that there would be no major inflation impact from the tariffs.
Large tech companies were generally higher with semiconductor company Micron Technology and Facebook parent Meta Platforms especially strong. Both piled on more than three per cent.
Boeing jumped 2.9 per cent despite reporting lower commercial plane deliveries in July compared with June. However, the figures were still above those in the year-ago period.
Intel rose 5.5 per cent after CEO Lip-Bu Tan met with Trump, who praised the executive after previously calling for him to step down. AFP

Bessent sees Nvidia, AMD China agreements as a model for others

[WASHINGTON] US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the recent deal to allow Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to resume lower-end AI chip sales to China, on the condition they give the US government a 15 per cent cut of the related revenue, could serve as a model for others. 'I think we could see it in other industries over time,' Bessent said on Wednesday (Aug 13) in a television interview on Bloomberg Surveillance. 'Right now, this is unique, but now that we have the model and the beta test, why not expand it?' Bessent credited President Donald Trump with the 'very unique solution' of allowing Nvidia to expand in China and become a bellwether for Chinese technology, with the US taxpayer getting 'a share of' the reward. The revenue the Treasury receives from the arrangement will go to pay down debt, he said. 'If we could make a substantial debt' repayment, that would then allow for discussions about a programme of sending money to taxpayers, he also said. Asked about reporting that China is urging its companies to avoid the Nvidia H20 processors now allowed for its market, Bessent said 'sure, we can discuss that' with the Chinese. 'But it also tells me that they are worried about the Nvidia chips becoming the standard in China.' China talks On Tuesday, Bessent said that he'd be meeting again with his Chinese counterparts 'within the next two or three months,' speaking on Fox Business. He dismissed the possibility of China emulating other US trading partners in winning tariff relief in return for boosting investments in the US. Sign Up Sign Up When asked if China could make pledges worth billions of US dollars like Japan, South Korea and the EU have as part of their trade agreements, Bessent said 'my sense is no because a lot of the buyout or the funds from the buyout are going to go to critical industries that we need to reshore and a lot of those need to be reshored away from China.' Whether the industry was semiconductors, rare-earth magnets, pharmaceuticals or steel, 'my sense is that isn't what will happen,' Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday. Tech and AI have been among the most high profile of areas of competition between the world's two biggest economies. President Donald Trump has extended a pause of higher tariffs on Chinese goods for another 90 days into early November, a move that stabilised trade ties between the world's two largest economies while they try to forge an agreement. Chinese companies in sectors such as electric vehicles have opened factories abroad to access new markets, a move that could also help them skirt US tariffs. He also indicated that Washington wanted to see measures from China over an extended period to stem the flow of chemicals used to make fentanyl before lowering duties Trump put in place over the issue. 'We will need to see months, if not quarters, if not a year, of progress on that before I could imagine those tariffs coming down,' he said. BLOOMBERG

Oil edges up after US warning on Russia sanctions

LONDON :Oil prices erased losses on Wednesday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions against Russia or secondary tariffs could go up if Friday's meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin does not go well. Brent crude futures edged up 6 cents to $66.18 a barrel by 1243 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 2 cents to $63.19. Before Bessent's comments, both contracts were lower after the International Energy Agency on Wednesday raised its forecast for oil supply growth this year but lowered its demand forecast due to lacklustre fuel demand across the major economies. Still, the price moves were limited ahead of Trump's meeting with Putin in Alaska to discuss ending Russia's war in Ukraine, which has shaken oil markets since February 2022. Meanwhile, in its monthly report on Tuesday, OPEC+ raised its global oil demand forecast for next year and trimmed estimates of supply growth from the United States and other producers outside the wider group, pointing to a tighter market. "Were we to take an aggregate of the respective IEA and OPEC oil demand growth projections for 2025 at their respective bearish and bullish ends, even a modest middle figure, say just north of 1 million bpd, can easily be serviced by non-OPEC supply growth alone at the moment," said independent energy analyst Gaurav Sharma. "So, I don't see a bullish case for oil over the near-term horizon." Meanwhile, crude inventories in the United States, the world's biggest oil consumer, rose by 1.52 million barrels last week, market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday.
