'So far, so good' - Nathan Collins enjoying life under Keith Andrews after being named Brentford captain

Irish Examiner2 days ago
Republic of Ireland international Nathan Collins says being named Brentford's new captain is a dream come true, and is relishing the challenge of leading his side through a period of change.
Collins was officially named as the Bees' new skipper on Saturday, stepping into the role previously held by Christian Norgaard, who left this summer to join Arsenal.
He celebrated his new post with a well-taken headed goal against local rivals Queens Park Rangers in a pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon, as Brentford ramped up their preparations for the new Premier League campaign.
The 24-year-old has already captained his country in the absence of Seamus Coleman, and says leading his club side at a young age is something he is immensely proud of.
'It's a dream as a kid to be able to captain a team in the Premier League,' Collins said after his side's 1-0 victory.
'I'm excited for the challenge. I'm looking forward to it. It's an easy group to captain. I have a lot of good people, a lot of experienced people here that I can bounce off and use for information or whatever I need. I'm going to enjoy it.
'I'd like to think the way I play football, I'm a leader in general, so I don't want to have to change too much.'
After several years of consistency under former boss Thomas Frank, this summer has seen significant change at the west London outfit.
Frank has departed to take over as the new Tottenham Hotspur head coach, and has been replaced in the dugout by his former set-piece coach, and Collins' fellow Irishman, Keith Andrews.
'I've had him since under-15s in Ireland, so I'm sick of him,' Collins joked when asked about working under Andrews.

'So far, so good. I'm enjoying it. His ideas are good. The lads he's brought in are playing with a lot of good, new ideas.
'It's going to be different. It's going to be fresh from what Thomas has given, but it's an exciting challenge.'
Collins might boast plenty of experience for his age, but was certainly not the only choice to be the club's new captain.
Andrews has added former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to his squad this summer, while long-serving players Ethan Pinnock, Mathias Jensen, and Rico Henry would also have been considered.
'I've seen him really develop as a human being,' Andrews explains on why he has placed his trust in Collins.
'He's very, very mature for his age. There's a lot of experience for his age and his standards are very, very high.
'He's very ambitious and he has the full respect of not just the players, but all the staff. We have a lot of leaders in our squad but Nathan, for me, was the right decision.'
Along with former captain Norgaard, meanwhile, last season's top scorer Bryan Mbeumo has also left this summer for Manchester United, and there remains uncertainty around the future of second top goalscorer from the last campaign Yoane Wissa, who was left out of the friendly against QPR amid uncertainty around his future.
'Of course, you're always disappointed to lose players of that quality,' Collins admits.
'They deserve the opportunity. What they've done for us last season, what they've done for Brentford as a whole is unbelievable.
'They deserve these opportunities. This club moves on. We get on with it.
'We have new players coming in for those positions, new players who want that shirt, who want to fight for that position. It's a new challenge. Someone else has to step into that role.'
Key to Brentford's rise from League Two to the Premier League has been their ability to replace players who move on. When the club sold Ollie Watkins in the Championship, they replaced him with Ivan Toney, whose goals helped fire Brentford to the top flight.
And Collins has the utmost confidence that the club can do it again this season, even if Wissa should follow Mbeumo and Norgaard out the door.
'In football, it moves quick,' he said. 'Players move on, managers move on. It happens quickly and you have to get your head around that.
'In this club, we've bounced back. There's a lot of good people in the background who are in the same job, helping and pushing us. It's an exciting challenge this season.
'We all know Wissa. He's a lovely lad. He's a good guy. Even around the changing room, he's a good personality. It's up to him what he wants to do.
'It's not going to affect us too much on the pitch. If he's here, great. If he's not, then we move on. It's up to him. It's his decision. No one else can help him with that. We'll see what happens.'
Collins himself has also been linked with other clubs this summer, including a possible reunion with Frank at Spurs, but says he is firmly focused on helping steer Brentford through this period of change.
'My focus is here,' he said. 'We're ready to go for the season. One more friendly, get a full 90 in that and be ready and raring to go for Nottingham Forest.'

In the CIES football observatory, Baleba is valued at up to £76million, though it is understood Brighton have no intention to sanction a sale for the rising star this summer, with Seagulls chief Paul Barber denying that an approach had been made at all. Barber said: "There is always going to be interest in our players. Manchester United have not been in touch with me, speculation is speculation. "Carlos is a fantastic talent and we hope he will be here for years to come. But it's subject to the dynamics of the football world, which is not always predictable." United are on the hunt for a dynamic midfielder to go in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 pivot after unconvincing displays by Manuel Ugarte in pre-season, with his display against Everton coming in fro particular scrutiny. Baleba was one of the Premier League's top ranked midfielders last season for tackles, blocks, interceptions and recoveries, while his progressive carries and forward passing numbers were also impressive. And such is the fervour for United to sign Baleba - who exclusively told SunSport about his ambition to win the Ballon d'Or - that the thought of getting the deal over the line has seen some of the Red Devils faithful make some stunning promises. Baleba made his international debut for Cameroon last year and has played in seven games for the Indomitable Lions so far. And his high ambitions of winning football's ultimate individual prize is sure to go down well with Man Utd fans and transfer chiefs as they look to bring the club back to its former glory. He told SunSport in an exclusive interview: "Declan Rice, Matheus Cunha, Joelinton, they've all told me I've got it in me. I want to win the Ballon d'Or like Rodri. Advertisement "I watched him during the Euros and before his injury I played against him and time I got the ball, he was right in front of me. Advertisement 'But I need to stay focused, stay calm, not rush, and not let what people write get in my head. If I keep working hard, I can be like Luka Modric or Toni Kroos, I just need to stay grounded." Baleba's journey to football stardom is nothing short of remarkable. He tragically lost his mother three years ago just as he got his breakthrough European move to French side Lille. But he explained the pain of his loss drives him forwards to be the best version of himself. Baleba continued: "It was very difficult for me because I didn't see my mum. I wanted her next to me, but when I signed for Brighton, she wasn't here. Advertisement 'That's why the first season was really hard. I thought about her a lot. But I vowed that I would be the best version of myself and go as far as I can in my career." His English is still a work in progress, but he's proud of the steps he has taken to settle in, even if the British weather isn't always his cup of tea. He added: "I love it here, to be honest. My favourite English food is the English breakfast, if I'm allowed to say that! But the weather is the only issue, it changes all the time." 9 Advertisement TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Viktor Gyökeres labours as Arsenal fall short against Villarreal and Pépé

Arsenal 2 Villarreal 3 New season, same old Arsenal? On an evening when Viktor Gyökeres was meant to announce himself as the solution to all of Mikel Arteta's problems, instead it was a figure from Arsenal's past who stole the show. At £72m – £8m more than they may end up paying for the Sweden striker – Nicolas Pépé was an expensive Arsenal signing, a few months before Arteta replaced Unai Emery in 2019. Most of the fans who packed out the Emirates Stadium for this pre-season friendly will not have many fond memories of the Ivory Coast international's spell in north London, but he clearly had a point to prove here. Pépé's early goal and strikes from Karl Etta Eyong and the former Tottenham loanee Arnaut Danjuma sealed an impressive win for Villarreal, and left Arteta with plenty of questions to resolve before Arsenal's opening game of the season next weekend against Manchester United. Gyökeres, who is the headline act of a spending spree that could exceed £200m, looked short of match fitness as he toiled up front for 62 minutes. Only the introduction of the 15‑year‑old Max Dowman for his first senior appearance at the Emirates Stadium could lift the mood as he won a penalty that allowed Martin Ødegaard to make the scoreline more respectable. But there were more reasons to be fearful for Arsenal's fans as they aim to improve on finishing as Premier League runners-up for a third successive season. There had been a sense of anticipation in the late summer air as they queued patiently at the club shop before kick‑off, with several already sporting Gyökeres's new replica No 14 shirt. Having made his debut last week as a substitute against Spurs in their 1-0 defeat in Hong Kong, the Sweden striker is still playing catch‑up having stayed away from pre-season with Sporting as he attempted to force through his move. But he was included in a strong starting lineup, with Ethan Nwaneri deputising for Ødegaard alongside the new signing Christian Nørgaard and Mikel Merino in midfield. The match programme featured pictures of all six of Arsenal's summer arrivals on the cover, with Martín Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga on the bench Arteta used his programme notes to express his belief they 'will add quality and depth to the squad, which is what we are going to need throughout the season'. Areteta added: 'We know what our targets are and what we want to achieve this season – there is a big belief in our ability to achieve that. We have been very, very close the last few seasons and the whole team is going to determine whether we achieve that or not.' It was Nwaneri, who has signed a new contract this summer, who caught the eye early on. A cross from Merino that was meant for the forehead of Gyökeres instead found Bukayo Saka at the back post and he could not direct the ball on target. But with only Gabriel Magalhães missing from his first-choice back four, Arteta will be concerned with how easily Villarreal established a 2-0 lead. Pépé, who joined Villarreal last year on a free transfer and is set to be joined by the former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey after he agreed an initial one-year deal, was unlucky when his shot came back off the post before he eventually forced the ball past David Raya when Arsenal failed to clear. The Spaniard was left fuming with his defence when Etta Eyong doubled the Spanish side's lead just after the half-hour, although Nørgaard immediately pulled one back from a corner. Like last season when they struggled from a lack of creativity, that seemed to be Arsenal's best chance of scoring as Gyökeres was forced to live off scraps before the break. Mosquera and Zubimendi were summoned for the second half and there was an immediate improvement. Gyökeres finally had a sight of goal when played in by Merino but his shot was well saved by Luiz Júnior. It needed Dowman, who has been hailed as a 'special talent' by Arteta despite his tender years, to save some face after Danjuma had raced clear to make it 3-1, although Madueke missed the decisive penalty in a post‑match shootout. 'Max is moving so fast – even last year when he was training with us, he was doing these kind of things and now he is doing them in the games,' said Arteta. 'The efficiency he shows in every attacking action is incredible and he deserves more chances.' On Gyökeres, Arteta added: 'Every day in training he is getting a really good feeling and connection with all the other players who are going to help him. He hasn't trained for a team for two months and, on Saturday, he will take another step and be in a very good position.' Guardian

Son Heung-min completes move to Los Angeles FC for record MLS fee

Son Heung-min has ended his 10-year stay at Tottenham after making the "hardest decision ever" to leave for Los Angeles FC in a record Major League Soccer transfer. It was revealed on Saturday that Son would depart Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances and months after he captained the club to Europa League glory. After an agreement between Tottenham and LAFC was struck for a deal in excess of £20m, the 33-year-old arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday and a day later he has finalised his transfer, which is the highest fee paid by an MLS club for a player. In a post to Spurs fans on Instagram, Son, who has signed an initial two-year deal with LAFC with options for a further two, wrote: "How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go. "It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. "I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. "I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. "I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. With pride and honour." Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. After a tough debut campaign the South Korea captain went on to become one of the club's best ever players and made himself a Premier League great in the process. Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. The Chuncheon-born attacker also won the league's Golden Boot award in the 2021-22 season after scoring 23 times and he sits 17th in the list of all-time scorers in the division with 127 goals. Under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, Son's consistent displays helped turn Tottenham into genuine title contenders but silverware continued to allude them after a second-placed finish in 2017 was followed by a Champions League runner-up spot two years later. Whilst various members of Pochettino's team left not long after the Argentinian's winter departure in 2019, Son stayed to work under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte before he was tasked with leading a new era by Ange Postecoglou. Postecoglou named Son as his captain in the wake of Kane's high-profile switch to Bayern Munich and Hugo Lloris' departure from the first team and after a rollercoaster two seasons under the Australian, they achieved the holy grail together on 21 May. Son was consigned to a place on the bench in Bilbao for the Europa League final against Manchester United following an injury-affected campaign, but was introduced to make his final competitive appearance for Spurs to help them win 1-0 and end a 17-year wait for silverware. It etched Son's name into the history books as he became only the fourth captain in Spurs' history to lift a European trophy after Danny Blanchflower, Alan Mullery and Steve Perryman. The popular South Korean will renew acquaintances with Lloris and move to Los Angeles, which boasts one of the largest Korean populations in the world, ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States.
