"Why no revision for 8 years?": Manickam Tagore demands Centre revise income limit of OBC non-creamy layer
New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Wednesday slammed the Centre for not making an upward revision in the income limit to determine the OBC non-creamy layer, which currently remains at Rs 8 lakh.
The Congress MP said that this 'neglect' affected 'lakhs of families who are denied rightful access to education and job opportunities due to an outdated income cap'.
'Despite multiple demands, the income limit to determine the OBC non-creamy layer remains at Rs 8 lakh -- unchanged since 2017. As per the response from the Minister of Social Justice (dated 13 May 2025), there is no proposal under consideration even now. Why is there continued discrimination towards BCs? Inflation and income levels have risen over the years, but the criteria for availing OBC reservation benefits have not been updated. This neglect affects lakhs of families who are denied rightful access to education and job opportunities due to an outdated income cap. Why is the Government ignoring OBC welfare? Meanwhile, in a matter pertaining to reservations for OBCs in Maharashtra, the Supreme Court orally remarked that reservations in the country are akin to a railway journey, where those who are already inside the train are now resisting the inclusion of others.
'Reservation business in this country has become like a railway. Those who have entered the coach, entered the bogey, they don't want anyone else to enter.', the top-court judge said, implying that such are the claims made by the petitioner before it.
Senior Advocate Gopal Sankarnarayanan, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the assessment of social backwardness is relevant for constitutional reservations under Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution of India. However, he contended that this criterion has nothing to do with regard to electoral reservations, which, as per the Supreme Court's ruling in the Krishnamoorthy case, require a separate determination of political backwardness.
At this juncture, Justice Surya Kant remarked, 'When you follow the principle of inclusivity, the States are bound to identify more classes. There will be social backwards class, politically backwards class, and economically backwards classes. Why should they (any class) be deprived of the benefit? Why should it be confined to one particular family or group?'
The Court was hearing a plea filed by one Mangesh Shankar Sasane, who raised the issue of OBC reservation granted in elections merely on the basis of social backwardness without ascertaining political backwardness of the concerned persons. (ANI)

Govt releases over Rs 800 crore for development works across city
New Delhi: Delhi govt on Friday released funds to civic bodies for several development works across the city. While Municipal Corporation of Delhi received Rs 820 crore, NDMC got Rs 8 crore and the Cantonment Board Rs 5.5 crore. Rs 50.8 crore was released for biomining activities at the three landfill sites in Delhi under the first instalment of the basic tax assignment for the financial year 2025–26. This amount will help in the speedy activity of biomining at these sites and facilitate the reduction in mounds of garbage, said MCD. For the Okhla landfill site, Rs 20.3 crore was released, for the Bhalswa landfill site Rs 20.8 crore, and for the Ghazipur landfill site Rs 9.7 crore was released. She said, "Our aim is to transform Delhi into a modern and developed capital, and local bodies play a key role in that journey. Keeping that in mind, our govt released the first instalment of funds: Rs 820 crore to MCD, Rs 8 crore to NDMC and Rs 5.5 crore to the Cantonment Board." Gujarat Congress general secy held over post on Opration Sindoor
The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, Rajesh Soni, was on Friday arrested by the Gujarat Police Cyber Crime Cell over an alleged objectionable social media post on Operation Sindoor, officials said even as GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil criticised the move. According to police officials, Soni allegedly made disparaging statements about the Armed Forces in his post. Cyber Crime Cell Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Sharma told The Indian Express, 'Soni was booked under BNS Sections 152 (endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India) and 353 (making, publishing or circulating statements that could lead to public mischief) for demoralising the army.' SP Sharma confirmed that earlier in the day, Soni was detained from his home in Ahmedabad and subsequently placed under arrest. He was produced before court, which then sent him to judicial custody. Demanding 'immediate bail' from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for 'social leader and political activist' Rajeshbhai T Soni, GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil said, 'Last night, just like a terrorist is being caught, Rajeshbhai T Soni was arrested by Gandhinagar Cyber Crime. Ludhiana: AAP minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond criticised the BJP and Congress for their "alliance" against AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora in Ludhiana West. "BJP has conceded defeat and is urging voters not to support AAP. Their fear of Sanjeev Arora's clean image is evident," Sond said. He also slammed the "unethical tactics" of the Congress and BJP, which, he claimed, were aimed at diverting attention from Bharat Bhushan Ashu's "corruption scandals." He urged residents to choose honesty and development by electing Sanjeev Arora. In a scathing attack on the Congress and Ashu, AAP leader Neel Garg accused them of engaging in "sympathy-driven theatrics."
