Manohar launches supply of ration through fair price shops
Pithapuram: In an effort to ensure transparency and curb irregularities in the public distribution system (PDS), the Andhra Pradesh government has reintroduced the distribution of essential commodities through fair price shops, announced Minister for Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Nadendla Manohar.
Speaking to the media after launching the ration distribution at a PDS outlet in Pithapuram town on Sunday, the Minister highlighted the government's commitment to revamping the ration system for the benefit of the people.
The State government has taken steps to distribute essential commodities to 1.46 crore families through a network of 29,761 ration shops across Andhra Pradesh, he said. Beneficiaries are now allowed to collect their ration supplies from any nearby shop, not just the one linked to their ration card, he added. He said that this will offer greater convenience and flexibility.
Minister Manohar accused the previous government of misusing nearly ₹1,700 crore of public funds under the guise of doorstep delivery of rations. In contrast, he claimed the current government's revitalisation of ration shops is expected to save Rs385 crore in public funds.
Ration shops will now remain open from the 1st to the 15th of every month, operating in two shifts 8 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm allowing beneficiaries to collect their supplies at their convenience. For 15.6 lakh specially identified beneficiaries, including the elderly above 65 years and differently-abled persons, home delivery will be ensured by the 5th of each month.
To streamline this service, dedicated WhatsApp groups have been formed to monitor deliveries. Dealers have been instructed to upload delivery photos in real time, and any discrepancies in weight or denial of services will result in strict action. Dealers are also advised to ensure the proper functioning of ePoS and weighing machines and to arrange alternate methods in case of tenical issues. The Minister also explained that a new mobile application is being developed to provide real-time updates and transparency in the distribution process.
For quick grievance redressal, QR codes are being installed at every ration shop to allow beneficiaries to directly contact higher officials.
Minister Manohar stated that soon after the new government assumed office, it took firm steps to curb the ration mafia. Tight security has been deployed at ports like Kakinada and Visakhapatnam to prevent illegal rice smuggling to other States. He further revealed that those involved in smuggling activities have been booked under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, with security tightened at all ports across the State.
This initiative marks a significant move toward restoring integrity and efficiency in the State's public distribution system. Kakinada Rural MLA Pantham Nanaji, Former MLAs SVSN Varma, Pendem Dorababu and others participated in the programme.

Vijayawada: Assembly deputy speaker K Raghurama Krishna Raju on Tuesday suggested delinking NTR Vaidya Seva cards from white ration cards to curb smuggling of PDS rice. Raju, who is also the chairman of legislative assembly petitions committee which held deliberations in the assembly committee hall, said they will soon submit proposals to the state govt on the issue. He said linking every govt scheme to white ration cards has led to even those who do not need them obtaining these cards, resulting in the misuse of ration rice and large-scale smuggling. "Senior officials from relevant depts also agree that delinking white ration cards from the issuance of NTR Vaidya Seva cards would yield positive results. There are approximately 1.70 crore families in the state, of which around 1.48 crore have white ration cards. The state govt is spending approximately ₹5,100 crore on ration rice distribution without central assistance. Delinking of rice cards with health cards could save up to ₹2,000 crore," said Raju. He opined that redirecting these funds to education could pave the way for a brighter future for students. Uncertainty looms large over Telangana's Waqf Board's future
1 2 Hyderabad: With uncertainty looming over the existence of the Telangana Waqf Board following the amendment of the Waqf Act 2025, the state govt has sought advice legal advice from the advocate general and law department on whether the existing board should continue. According to official sources, the govt has requested guidance on the matter. Meanwhile, the minority welfare department has reportedly directed Telangana Waqf Board chairman Syed Azmatullah Husseni not to convene any board meetings until further orders. The issue came to the fore after chairman Husseni wrote a letter to the chief executive officer of the board last month, requesting that a meeting be convened. As the amended Waqf Act has come into force and there is no stay on its implementation from the Supreme Court , Telangana waqf board CEO Md Asadullah sought the opinion on the matter. Sources noted that the chairman has been forwarding files to the CEO. Officials said that under Section 14 of the amended Waqf Act, the composition of the board has undergone significant changes. While elected members are allowed to complete their terms, all nominated members are required to step down. The state govt is mandated to reconstitute the board in accordance with the new provision of Section 14. However, the chairman, on his part, argued that the last Waqf board meeting was held in October 2024 and several public issues and grievances are still pending. He asserted that it is in the public interest to address these issues. "The board has every power to take up the issues, take decisions and pass resolutions," the chairman informed the govt.

Rajasthan State employee who was detained earlier arrested for espionage
The Rajasthan Police's intelligence unit has arrested a State government employee on charges of spying for Pakistan. He had been under surveillance for suspicious activities for an extended period. The accused, Shakur Khan, was earlier detained on May 28 and subjected to an intensive interrogation by multiple agencies. Khan, 49, working as an assistant administrative officer (AAO) at the district employment office in Jaisalmer, was allegedly passing sensitive and strategic information to his handlers in Pakistan. He obtained Pakistani visas on several occasions and travelled to Pakistan without reporting to higher authorities. Inspector General of Police (Security) Vishnu Kant said here on Tuesday that Khan was in regular contact with some individuals working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, especially Ahsan-ur-Rahim, alias Danish, and Sohail Qamar. Danish was declared persona non grata by the Union government last month and was asked to leave India immediately. 'During his visits to Pakistan, Khan came in contact with the agents of the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI). He collected sensitive information after returning to India and transmitted it to his Pakistani handlers through WhatsApp and other social media platforms,' Mr. Kant said in a statement. Khan had access to sensitive documents while working in the border district of Jaisalmer. Since the matter constituted a serious security breach, a case was registered under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Khan was arrested, Mr. Kant said. A court in Jaipur, where Khan was produced under strict security on Tuesday, remanded him to police custody for seven days. Pakistani contacts As per the first information report, Khan had several Pakistani phone numbers saved in his three mobile phones, which have been seized and sent for technical analysis. He allegedly shared strategically important videos and images with his handlers on these numbers, but this material had been deleted. A native of Mangliyon Ki Dhani hamlet in Jaisalmer district's Badoda Gaon village, Khan served as a personal assistant to former Minister Saleh Mohammed during the previous Congress regime. Khan's association with Mr. Mohammed has led to a political controversy since his detention. Pradesh Congress Committee president Govind Singh Dotasra said being a personal assistant to a Minister did not constitute a valid ground to implicate the Minister or his family in a crime. 'We have nothing to do with any criminal or anti-national activity. If the police have received some inputs, they should investigate and take action against the accused,' Mr. Dotasra said.
