Surveen Chawla says actors need to gain weight for South cinema: 'I was told you are too thin, nothing would bounce'
Actor Surveen Chawla started her acting journey with television shows like Kahin To Hoga and Kaajjal, and later earned recognition for her performances in Punjabi and Hindi cinema. In a recent interview with Hauterrfly, Surveen spoke about losing roles due to the 'TV actor' tag and recalled being asked to gain weight to work in South cinema. Surveen discussed the label of 'television actor' and recalled losing films because of it. She remembered people telling her 'you are exposed' and said, 'I was told, don't do this for some time. You should not be seen. You go down South, you need to put on weight; you come back here (to Hindi cinema), you need to lose weight.'
When asked if actors really need to put on weight to work in South cinema, Surveen said, 'Yes, I was told you are too thin, slim because you won't have bosoms. Kuch hilega nahi (Nothing will jiggle), nothing will bounce. Now it's done a little more sophisticatedly. In my time, they were not so sophisticated. They told me to my face, so I gave it back to their face.'
Surveen featured in popular television shows like Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kahin To Hoga, and Kaajjal before making her Bollywood debut with the film Hum Tum Shabana in 2011. Over the years, she made her mark in Punjabi and Hindi cinema with films like Taur Mittran Di, Saadi Love Story, Singh vs Kaur, Hate Story 2, Parched, and more.
Apart from this, she has also been part of several popular web series such as Sacred Games, Decoupled, and Rana Naidu. She was most recently seen in the series Criminal Justice 4. The show also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Asha Negi, Shweta Basu Prasad, Mita Vashisht, and Zeeshan Ayyub, among others, in key roles. 'It was a very sensitive scene," Madhavan said. 'There's this moment where I make my daughter dance through the night. She reaches a point where she can't hold it anymore and urinates. In the original version of the film, the approach to the scene was different. But here, I realized that even as a villain, if I looked at her during that moment, it would send out a completely different message. I needed the audience to feel disgust—not pity or justification." Madhavan explained how he changed his physical performance to reflect that discomfort. 'So, I wrapped myself in a blanket, deliberately avoiding looking at her. That decision not only worked for the character but gave me relief as an actor. I could step away emotionally while still staying true to the role. I simply tell the mother, 'Can you go help your daughter?'" He further added, 'There were many such moments during filming that made me deeply uncomfortable. But I had to find ways to stay authentic while protecting myself emotionally." Shaitaan, directed by Vikas Bahl, is the Hindi adaptation of the 2023 Gujarati film Vash. It stars Ajay Devgn, Jyotika, and Janki Bodiwala alongside Madhavan in a dark and sinister role. The film, which follows a family held hostage by a mysterious man who exerts mind control over their daughter, was both a critical and commercial success, grossing over ₹100 crore at the Indian box office. Thug Life Box Office Collection Day 1: After days of controversy, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life finally released at the silver screen on Thursday. According to industry tracker superstar Kamal Haasan's latest film garnered an estimated ₹ 11.67 crore India net on its first day for all languages. Apart from this, the movie had an overall 48.72 percent Tamil Occupancy on Thursday and an overall 5.73% Hindi Occupancy for 2D version. For the IMAX 2D version, Thug Life had an overall 32.86% Tamil occupancy, an overall 21.92% Telugu Occupancy and an overall 7.17% Hindi Occupancy. Thug Life had an overall 34.25 percent Tamil Occupancy on Thursday for 4DX version. According to report of The Hindu, Thug Life might see a hefty loss of up to ₹ 40 crore as its Karnataka release is in limbo. Assam teen arrested for death threat to city rapper and demanding one crore extortion
Navi Mumbai: An 18-year-old college student was arrested in Assam for sending a death threat message to city rapper Mohammad Bilal Shaikh, also known as Emiway Bantai, and demanding Rs 1 crore in extortion. The student, Arnav Ramen Kumar Haloi, claimed to be Goldy Brar, an aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and the alleged mastermind of the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. The threat message was sent on May 25, coinciding with the release of an online teaser for a music video in tribute to Moose Wala. ACP Mayur Bhujbal said that Haloi, a first-year student from Sonitpur district, Assam, was arrested by the NRI coastal police team on June 1, six days after an FIR was registered for the death threat and extortion demand. Haloi previously sent threat messages to two famous singers in Bihar and Punjab, but they did not lodge police complaints, which may have emboldened him to target rapper Shaikh. He does not have a criminal record and claimed he was not associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. This is being verified by obtaining his mobile CDR details. Haloi stated that his intention was to make quick money by sending death threat messages to extort large sums from famous rappers and singers. An FIR was registered at the NRI coastal police station on May 27 by rapper Shaikh's manager, Pooja Kuila, who received the death threat message on May 25. This was just hours before Emiway Bantai released a music video in tribute to Moose Wala, as a teaser was posted online. The threat message was received while Shaikh was recording a song at his Seawoods studio on the morning of May 25. The message, claiming to be from Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, warned that rapper Emiway Bantai would be killed if he failed to pay Rs one crore within 24 hours. The message also mentioned US-based Rohit Godara, another alleged key member of Bishnoi's gang, suspected to be involved in Moose Wala's murder. ACP Bhujbal stated that the message sender's mobile tower location was traced to Sonitpur district in Assam. The NRI coastal police team went to Assam on May 30 and sought the help of local police to find Haloi's residence address, from where he was arrested on May 31. He was produced before Dhekiajuli court in Sonitpur district, Assam, and his transit remand was obtained. Haloi was brought to Navi Mumbai on June 1 and produced before Belapur JMFC court, which remanded him to police custody until Thursday. An extension of his police custody for two days was obtained as the police are retrieving his previous text messages, which he might have deleted after sending threat messages to others as well.
