CU syndicate member seeks revision of UG Malayalam MDC citing overemphasis on Left ideologies
Syndicate member P Rasheed Ahmed said the chapters such as 'Janmitham' and 'Karshaka Samaramgal and Bhooparishkaranam' in the syllabus were framed exclusively around the history of Left movements.
He alleged that the syllabus attempts to prove that Kerala's social development was made possible solely through Leftist movements, while completely disregarding the contributions of other govts. Only works by CPM leaders and writers from Leftist thought streams were included for study, he added.
Ahmed noted that MDC, which replaced the second language courses, should have been designed to impart fundamental knowledge of the language and literary sensibility. Instead, nearly 95% of the current syllabus is comprised of subjects such as political science, history and law. The course, he said, has shifted from 'teaching Malayalam' to merely 'teaching in Malayalam'.
He demanded that the Malayalam MDC syllabus should be urgently reviewed by an expert committee, with ideologically biased content removed and restructured to prioritise language and literature.

Proposal for development of Indirammana Kere will be sent to govt soon: DC
Dharwad: A proposal will soon be sent to the state govt for the development of Indirammana Kere at Hulikeri in Alnavar taluk, Dharwad district, said deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu during her visit to the site on Thursday. The DC offered baagina at the tank and noted that the govt is committed to the development of the waterbody, whose foundation stone was laid by then chief minister D Devaraj Urs. Surrounded by scenic beauty, the tank holds great potential to be developed as a tourist spot, she said. Divya assured villagers that a bridge has already been constructed at a cost of Rs 9 crore under the minor irrigation department, thanks to the interest evinced by district minister Santosh Lad. Additionally, a canal has been built at a cost of Rs 6 crore, she said. Earlier, villagers had urged the DC to take steps to transform the tank into a tourist spot, pointing out that people from neighbouring Uttara Kannada and Belagavi districts often visit the tank. The residents raised concerns about encroachment of gomala land in the village. Responding to this, the DC said the tahsildar has been directed to examine the complaint and take steps to clear the encroachment. The villagers also demanded the construction of a small bridge across two streams near the village to ensure easier accessibility to their farms. Built in 1984 on the tributary of Tattihalla, Indirammana Kere supports irrigation in Alnavar and Kittur taluks. The 9.8km-long left bank canal irrigates 1,036 hectares while the 2.9km-long right bank canal irrigates 172 hectares. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). After India-China talks, border traders in U'khand seek early start of business via Lipulekh pass
Pithoragarh: Border traders of Pithoragarh's Dharchula area have welcomed the decision to reopen trade through the Lipulekh pass and urged the govt to start business at the earliest. Suspended since 2020 due to Covid-19, the India-Tibet border trade is set to resume after the two neighbours agreed on Aug 18 to reopen three passes — Shipki La in Himachal, Nathu La in Sikkim and Lipulekh in Uttarakhand. About 265 trade passes -- 69 traders and 196 helpers -- were issued by district administration and "trade volume here is said to be around Rs 30 million", as per the last official record in 2019. Welcoming the move to resume business, general secretary of border trade association, Diwan Singh Raypa, said, "Trading season usually runs from July to Oct, but was earlier extended till Nov, leaving nearly 100 days for govt to facilitate arrangements so that business can resume this year." "Traders' goods are largely dumped in godowns at Taklakot on Tibet's side, which was affecting us. So, govt gave us some subsidy for that," added Jeewan Singh, the association's president. Besides the pandemic, tension with Nepal had also impacted the trade. On May 8, 2020, defence minister Rajnath Singh had inaugurated a 75-km long road connecting Lipulekh pass with Dharchula area in Pithoragarh in order to make the commute easier for Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrims on the Indian took exception to this, claiming that "a part of the road was built on its territory". Months later, Nepalese govt released an "amended" political map, showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura (areas in India) as part of its territory. On Wednesday, Nepal again took exception to Lipulekh, reiterating its claim on Kalapani. The govt of India strongly rejected it. The border trade via Lipulekh has been going on for decades. It was stopped in 1962, and was started again in 1992. In 1981, the Kailash Mansarovar journey started and both trade and yatra were held on the same Darchula-Lipulekh route. Kerala-style law demanded in unisex parlours
Mangaluru: An advocate here has urged the implementation of a Kerala-style law to curb unethical practices occurring under the guise of massage at some unisex beauty parlours and ayurvedic centres. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, advocate Manoraj Rajeev mentioned that a request is being submitted to the chief minister, law minister and opposition leaders through the deputy commissioner, urging elected representatives to take appropriate action on this matter during the assembly session. There were complaints of unethical activities being conducted under the pretext of massage by young women for men in unisex beauty parlours. Apart from Kerala, there is no law in the country regulating how massages should be conducted, the rules to be followed, or the system to be in place in such centres. Consequently, some unisex beauty parlours face police raids. This affects not only those working there, but also those visiting for beauty treatments and their families. Businesses operating for livelihood also face difficulties. Therefore, Rajeev insisted that the Karnataka govt should formulate an appropriate law for this. He added that enforcing a law against illegal activities conducted under the guise of massage would bring them under control. Further, he said that there is a need to establish a high court bench in Dakshina Kannada. However, this requires huge funding and in this context, granting additional powers to senior judges of the district court for adjudicating certain writ petitions within the district court's jurisdiction could resolve many cases through the district court, Rajeev said, adding that a request is being submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the law minister, and opposition leaders regarding this. Advocates Nandini Akhil, Roshni Swarabh, and Shishir Bhandary were present. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
