Ankara (Turkiye), Jul 23 (AP) Turkiye and Britain on Wednesday signed a preliminary agreement for the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkiye, a significant step in Ankara's efforts to modernise its air fleet.
Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and his British counterpart, John Healey, inked a memorandum of understanding during a defence industry fair in Istanbul, Turkiye's Ministry of National Defence said.
NATO member Turkiye has long aimed to buy 40 Eurofighter jets, which are built by a consortium of British, German and Italian companies. Germany reportedly initially opposed the sale but later reversed its position. Britain led negotiations on behalf of the consortium.
A Turkish defence ministry statement said the memorandum takes the two countries 'one step closer to a full agreement on the Typhoon." 'Both Ministers welcome signature as a positive step towards bringing Turkiye into the Typhoon club and share a mutual ambition to conclude the necessary arrangements as soon as possible," it added.
Turkish officials have said that they are still negotiating over pricing and technical terms, saying that they have received an initial offer and expect to submit a counter-proposal.
Turkiye is also developing a domestic fifth-generation fighter jet, the KAAN, which is slated to be operational in 2028. (AP) SKS NSA NSA

'You'll Sit There For Next 20 Years': Shah Snaps As Oppn Heckles Jaishankar During Op Sindoor Debate

Amit Shah said the opposition had faith in a foreign country rather than India's foreign minister, which is why they are sitting on opposition benches. Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack at the opposition parties for disrupting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's address in Lok Sabha on Monday, saying they would rather believe some foreign country than the country's own foreign minister. As opposition parties interrupted Jaishankar's speech, Shah got up and said, 'They (Opposition) don't have faith in an Indian Foreign Minister, but they have faith in some other country. I can understand the importance of foreigners in their party, but that does not mean that they should impose this on House proceedings." 'This is the reason why they are sitting there (opposition benches), and will remain sitting there for the next 20 years," the Home Minister further said. Shah's furious response came after members of opposition parties began heckling Jaishankar and raised slogans, while the External Affairs Minister was defending the diplomatic measures taken by India before and during Operation Sindoor, in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Shah rose again during Jaishankar's speech to chastise the Opposition for interrupting his speech and promised to expose their lies in the House tomorrow. 'When their Speakers were talking, we were listening to them patiently. I will inform you tomorrow how many lies have been told by them," he said. 'They are not able to listen to the truth… Even we can repeatedly interrupt speeches in the House, but when such an important issue is being discussed, and the EAM is speaking, does repeatedly disturbing him suit the opposition? Speaker sir, you should make them understand or else we will also not be able to make our members understand anything later," he said. The Operation Sindoor debate has taken centre stage on Monday, with the Opposition demanding answers from the government over India's May 7 to 10 operation against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Opposition also looks to corner the government over the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed in cold blood. Continuing the debate on Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will initiate the discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Amit Shah will be the first speaker tomorrow in the Lok Sabha. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Something like 10 or 12 days': Donald Trump slashes Putin's deadline of 50 days to end Ukraine war; says ‘very disappointed in him'

File photo: US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin (Picture credit: PTI, AP) US President Donald Trump has announced to shorten the deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, signalling growing frustration over a lack of progress on a ceasefire. Speaking in Scotland on Monday during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said he would no longer wait the full 50 days he had initially offered Putin earlier this month. "I'm disappointed in President Putin, very disappointed in him," Trump said, as quoted by news agency AFP, adding, 'We're going to reduce that 50 days to something like 10 or 12. I think I already know what's going to happen.' Ukraine praised Trump for saying he would cut the 50-day deadline. "Thanks to President Trump for standing firm and delivering a clear message of peace through strength," Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak said on social media, adding, "When America leads with strength, others think twice." Trump had originally warned Putin of severe economic penalties if the conflict wasn't halted by early September. These included 100 percent secondary tariffs on Russia and its trading partners, a move that would force any country continuing trade with Moscow to pay a steep price to sell goods in the US. This could affect nations like India and China, which still maintain trade relations with Russia. Trump told reporters at Turnberry that the decision to shorten the timeline was made because ceasefire hopes had repeatedly collapsed. 'We thought we had that settled numerous times,' he said, 'and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever — you have bodies lying all over the street.' The US President has in recent weeks begun expressing unusually harsh criticism of Putin. 'There's a bit of an issue with him,' he remarked, as per Politico. Although Trump has had several discussions with the Russian leader, even claiming they came close to ceasefire terms five times, little concrete progress has been made. Trump also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stating that a ceasefire there was 'possible' and urging international partners to share the responsibility. He criticised Hamas for reportedly stealing aid and added, 'It's not a US problem. It's an international problem.'

Arunachal: Civil-military fusion meet sets roadmap for border development

Agency: Itanagar, Jul 28 (PTI) In a significant move to boost coordination and address critical development and strategic concerns in Arunachal Pradesh's border district of Anjaw, the first-ever civil-military fusion meeting was held at Hawai on Monday. Key outcomes included a proposal to institutionalise a joint coordination committee, discussions on boosting local livelihoods through Army procurement, and plans for regular fusion meetings to fast-track initiatives. Anjaw Deputy Commissioner Millo Kojin called for deeper collaboration between the civil administration and the Army, noting the latter's vital role in emergency logistics and development support, an official statement informed here. He emphasised aligning efforts with the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Arunachal, and highlighted ITBP's Mission Himveer as a model, where 30 per cent of supplies are procured locally, for the Army to emulate. Kojin also proposed setting up CSD canteens in remote areas, offering skill development to youth, and supporting Agniveer recruitment through awareness drives. Administrative challenges like manpower shortage and road erosion in Mompani were also flagged. Commandant of the 82 Mountain Brigade, Brigadier Jaspreet Singh, stressed the Army's 'whole-of-nation' approach and urged the civil administration to support tourism promotion, especially in Walong. He called for joint efforts in improving Agniveer application rates through local outreach and motivation. Deputy Commander of the Brigade, Col Deepak Kataria, raised concerns about power shortfalls in Walong and Kibithu, poor banking access, and limited helicopter services affecting both tourism and emergency response. He pressed for urgent repair of key FSB routes (14, 16, and 17) and solid waste management systems to improve civic infrastructure. Lt Col Vinay Kumar shared progress under Operation Sadbhavna, including workshops for skills and healthcare, and plans to set up AI and Robotics Labs in the area. Captain Neeraj from Sparrow 82 Mountain Brigade proposed launching a community radio centre in Walong, seeking administrative help for infrastructure and licensing.
