Surge in Pune Metro ridership following PMPML fare hike as commuters opt for cheaper & faster travel
According to official data, Pune Metro has recorded an 11% increase in footfalls during the first 16 days of June as compared to the first 16 days of May this year. The daily ridership has grown by an average of over 16,000 passengers, amounting to a total of over 1.13 lakh additional commuters using the Pune Metro this month.
Transport experts note that the shift from buses to the metro marks a significant change in commuter preferences, particularly on routes where the difference in fares is substantial. For example, a PMPML bus ride from Pimpri to Ramwadi now costs ₹50 whereas the same journey via metro costs ₹35. Similarly, metro travel between Pimpri and Swargate is now ₹10 cheaper than that by bus.
Vaishali More, a Hinjewadi-based office worker, said, 'I used to travel by PMPML buses every day but the recent fare hike has made it unaffordable. With the metro, not only is the fare lower, but the ride is faster and more comfortable. I reach work on time without the stress of traffic or overcrowded buses.'
Apart from lower ticket prices, several commuters are also drawn to the metro's air-conditioned coaches, punctuality and smoother travel experience — a stark contrast to the frequent delays, congested roads, and overcrowding associated with PMPML buses.
Meanwhile, PMPML officials have refuted the claim that the fare hike is the sole reason for declining bus ridership. N Garade, traffic planner at PMPML, said, 'We cannot directly link the decrease in PMPML ridership to fare hikes.'
Echoing the sentiment, Hemant Sonawane, director of administration and public relations at PMPML, said, 'Metro ridership is definitely increasing, but attributing it entirely to our fare revision would be inaccurate. Factors like the onset of the monsoon and reopening of colleges are also contributing.'
PMPML revised its fare structure citing mounting operational losses. The authority discontinued old passes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, introducing new weekly passes priced at ₹70 and ₹150. Monthly pass rates were also increased, further impacting regular passengers.

Maha cabinet approves Rs 18 crore to make air travel from Solapur to Pune & Mumbai feasible
Kolhapur: The state cabinet approved Rs 18 crore to ensure air travellers from Solapur can travel to Pune and Mumbai at a subsidised rate of Rs 3,240 per seat, covering 100% of the operational cost of the service. The refurbished Solapur airport commenced flight operations with the Solapur-Goa route. However, despite several efforts, airline operators were hesitant to provide regular air services from Solapur to Mumbai and Pune, citing unaffordable ticket prices as the airport is not included in the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme for regional connectivity. To make air travel between Solapur and Pune and Solapur and Mumbai viable, state govt decided to grant a subsidy per seat to offset operational losses and make air travel affordable for people. "For one year, govt will provide a viability gap funding subsidy of Rs 3,240 per seat with a total budget of Rs 17.9 crore. After one year, the airport will come under the UDAN scheme and, thereafter, the state will grant 20% of the travel fares as per the UDAN scheme guidelines, and the viability gap funding will cease to exist," said the cabinet decision. A Goa-based airline currently operates flights on four days of the week — Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — from the Solapur airport. The flight lands at Mopa airport. A senior airport official said, "The discussions are on with other private air service providers to start services for connecting flights between Solapur, Pune, and Mumbai. The mid-size airplane (60 seater) will be deployed along the routes." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Piloted flights of UAE's flying taxi to start in the coming days
Archer Aviation, the US-based eVTOL aircraft manufacturer, has announced that piloted flights of its flying taxi service in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will start in the coming days. 'We expect the first piloted flight to take place within days. We've got a lot of confidence that we'll be in there soon,' Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said on Monday during the investor call after the second quarter results. Goldstein expressed confidence that Archer remains on track to launch the flying taxi service later this year in the UAE. Archer had signed definitive agreements with Abu Dhabi Aviation and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office for the launch of the world's first flying taxi service. As part of the deal, Archer delivered its first Midnight aircraft to the UAE and commenced its flight test program in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. 'Over the next several months, firstly, we're going to deliver an aircraft to the UAE later this summer. We'll start by doing some incremental testing out there, like validating performance in the higher temperature environment. Then we'll move on to improving routes on our intent networks in Abu Dhabi on the broader UAE, and then ultimately working towards sharing passengers again with Abu Dhabi Aviation,' Goldstein said. Archer's Midnight aircraft is fully electric and emission-free and it is designed to handle short-haul urban journeys, such as airport-to-downtown commutes. It is expected to slash travel times, reduce road congestion and offer a quieter and sustainable transportation alternative. In June, Archer conducted the first test flight of the air taxi, which took off from the helipad of Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal and cruised above the Abu Dhabi Marina. ADIO, in collaboration with @ehang and @multilevelgroup, hosted a landmark test flight of an autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Abu Dhabi.@saviabudhabi @gcaauae Learn more: — Abu Dhabi Investment Office (@InvestAbuDhabi) June 13, 2025 Ahead of the commercial launch, in July UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) had allowed the use of existing helipads for take-off and landing of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft (eVTOLs).

IndiGo's VC arm to back early-stage startups, gain early innovation edge
MUMBAI: India's largest airline, IndiGo, is expanding far beyond flying through its corporate venture capital (CVC) arm, IndiGo Ventures. The new entity is zeroing in on aviation and allied startups to grow the airline's ecosystem and keep pace with emerging innovations. 'It gives us early visibility and foresight into the innovations startups are pursuing and, where possible, allows early deployment of those ideas into the IndiGo ecosystem," Neetan Chopra, founder and director of IndiGo Ventures, told Mint in an exclusive interaction. Established in August 2024, the ₹450 crore fund was designed to bridge the gap between the slower pace of large corporations and the agile, rapid funding cycles typical of startups, said Ankit Sharma, managing partner at IndiGo Ventures, who was also present at the interaction. IndiGo Airlines anchors the fund with a ₹300 crore commitment, while other group entities and founders have contributed ₹150 crore. Operating under a Category AIF licence, the fund can raise up to ₹600 crore in total, with the remaining ₹150 crore expected to be raised within two years, in line with Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) regulations. InterGlobe Aviation, IndiGo's parent, reported a 20% drop in net profit to ₹2,176.3 crore in Q1FY26, from ₹2,728.8 crore a year earlier, while consolidated revenue grew 4.7% to ₹20,496.3 crore. According to its FY25 annual report, IndiGo also made a direct investment of ₹12 million into the VC arm. IndiGo Ventures targets early-stage companies, primarily pre-Series A to Series B rounds, aiming to hold 5-10% stake, Sharma said. While aviation is the core focus, the fund also explores adjacent sectors such as travel, cargo, logistics, and enterprise SaaS for airlines. The airline carried around 400,000 tonnes of cargo in FY25, reflecting the growing importance of this segment. Consumer startups are also a key focus, particularly those that improve the end-to-end passenger experience, said Sharma. This comes as the airline reported an 11.6% increase in passengers carried year-on-year, reaching 31 million in the first quarter of FY26. 'We're focused on three main areas for our startup funnel: aviation, travel and allied sectors, and consumer," Chopra said. 'Our goal is to ensure that IndiGo benefits as a consequence of these investments." Closing India's aerospace gap Aerospace manufacturing is another crucial area of interest. 'While India is one of the largest buyers of airplanes, it currently contributes less than 1% to aerospace component manufacturing," Sharma said. 'That gap has led to increased focus and activity in this sector over the last six to nine months." The fund's first investment in July, was in Jeh Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based startup with headquarters in Atlanta that specializes in high-precision, flight-critical engine components. The investment amount was not disclosed. Since then, Jeh Aerospace has secured $100 million in long-term contracts and raised an additional $11 million in a Series A round led by Elevation Capital and General Catalyst. The company produces components for tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers to major players like Airbus and Boeing. "Ultimately, this comes back to us in the form of an airplane," Sharma explained. This strategic investment positions IndiGo to 'influence product development, secure preferential pricing, and potentially share in Jeh's export-driven growth," said Pragya Priyadarshini, managing director at Primus Partners, a management consultancy firm in Delhi. Boosting maintenance capacity IndiGo is simultaneously investing ₹1,100 crore in a new MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, expected to be operational by early 2028. The airline currently has MRO facilities in Delhi and Bengaluru. The new facility is intended to boost in-house maintenance capacity and reduce reliance on external providers. 'MRO operations and startups like Jeh have the potential for strong synergies," Sharma noted. 'Companies like Jeh are still young startups, but by the time our manufacturing facilities are up and running, these companies will have scaled." Faster access to locally sourced components can reduce aircraft-on-ground (AOG) time, improving fleet utilization and revenue potential. Priyadarshini added that this investment could ensure a steady, lower-cost supply of critical spares, especially for the airline's large Airbus A320neo fleet, and mitigate supply chain disruptions.
