Buckingham Palace snubs Zara Tindall's 44th birthday days after Prince Harry comments

Sky News AU15-05-2025

Zara Tindall has celebrated her birthday but Buckingham Palace has failed to mark the beloved royal family member's big day.
The only daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, she is not technically a working royal like her cousins and works as a pro horse rider, even winning a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics as an equestrian.
Tindall, who is consistently ranked as among the most popular royals with the public, celebrated her 44th birthday on Thursday.
However, none of the official palace social media accounts marked Tindall's big day following a policy change surrounding birthdays after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
In 2022, royal aides announced the palace will only mark the birthdays of 'working members' of the royal family on their official social media accounts.
Awkwardly, the snub came just days after Tindall appeared to break rank with the royal family after publicly commenting on the monarchy's feud with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Last week, Tindall attended the London Sporting Club lunch and candidly spoke about her feuding royal relatives.
"It is very hard to see from the outside, but 100 per cent, it is a family that is still going through the same struggles other people do,' the Olympian said, as reported by The Sun newspaper.
The down to earth Tindalls live on Princess Anne's Gatcombe Park estate and share daughters Mia Grace and Lena Elizabeth and son Lucas Philip, who are similar in age to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Tindall serves as godmother to future King George, while her brother Mark Phillips has increasingly become 'like a brother' to Prince William after the Sussex feud.
She was also recently spotted attending the Bahrain Grand Prix alongside her other cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, as well her aunt the Duchess of York.
Meanwhile, her husband Mike Tindall has publicly defended his in-laws amid Markle's claims about her struggles marrying into the royal family.
Reflecting on his own transition into royal life, the former English rugby star admitted it was "easier than it could have been".
"Believe it or not, marrying into the royal family was pretty easy for me," he wrote in his memoir, The Good, the Bad, and the Rugby: Unleashed, released in October.
In a passage many took to be a cheeky dig at Markle, he wrote: "They were always nice to me, and I was always nice to them. Simple really."

Little Simz has 'forgiven' her absent father

Little Simz has "forgiven" her dad for not being present in her life. The 31-year-old rapper has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years, and although she still doesn't have a relationship with her dad, Simz insists she doesn't harbour any bitterness towards him, either. Speaking to the Guardian newspaper, she shared: "It doesn't affect the memories I have growing up. "It just wasn't meant to be between them … but I think there's still a lot of love there, and I'm sure my dad respects my mum having raised his children, you know? "Now that I'm older, I definitely just understand that parents are flawed as well, and I get it. I've tried to not hold on to the anger, maybe that I once felt, or like this deep resentment … I'm just trying to let it go." Asked if it was tough to become so philosophical about his absence, Simz replied: "Definitely, 100 percent. Especially when you just internalise a lot of it. "Like, did you not love me? Like, did you not … I don't think it's any of that. I just think it is what it is, to be honest. But I've forgiven him." Simz was raised in London by her Nigerian mother, Tola, and their family home was always full of foster children. The Picture Perfect hitmaker - whose real name is Simbiatu Ajikawo - actually relished the experience of spending time with so many different types of people at an early age. She said: "I met so many different kids from all different walks of life who just became part of my family and who my mum nurtured and took care of. "It was really beautiful. I gained newfound respect and appreciation for my family, knowing that it's not given that everyone has loving support … I never went a day without love." Simz won the Brit Award for Best New Artist in 2022, and she took her mother on stage with her. The rapper recalled: "I thought, 'wow, you came to this country not knowing anyone, not knowing a word of English, and now your last born has just won a Brit' … it's kind of crazy."

Tom Daley reveals whether he and husband Dustin Lance Black are planning to expand their family

Tom Daley doesn't want any more children. The 31-year-old former Olympic diver and his husband Dustin Lance Black, 50, are parents to sons Robbie, seven, and two-year-old Phoenix and are very content with family life the way it is. Asked if he wants to have more children, Tom told Britain's HELLO! magazine: 'Family of four is good.' Tom's boys make regular appearances on his social media channels, and while Robbie in particular seems to enjoy being in the spotlight, the former Team GB athlete is keen to 'protect' him from the downsides of game, such as bullying. He said: 'Robbie's got a lot of personality, but there's also a part of me, with everything I went through as a kid, that wants to protect him as much as possible.' Tom – who retired after the Paris Olympics in August 2024 with a total haul of five Olympic medals, including one gold - began diving when he was just seven years old and he is keen for his children to find their own passions in life, which he pledged that he and Lance will support however they can. He said: 'I want to be led by what they want to do. 'The way you can be your happiest is finding something you're passionate about, that you love to do, and then making it something you do every day. 'That's my hope for them.' Tom has opened up about battling an eating disorder in his new documentary 'Tom Daley: 1.6 Seconds', and though he is 'fine' these days, he will always have a 'very different' relationship with food and is paying particular attention to managing his 'expectations' now he is no longer expected to be in peak fitness. He said: 'Once you've had an eating disorder, you always have a very different relationship with food; you question everything you eat, the amount of exercise you're doing, the calories you're burning… 'Rationally, when I look at myself, I know I'm fine, but that's not what the eating disorder sees. 'The irrational part of your brain makes you question everything you do, making yourself not eat and then binge-eating. 'Now that I'm retired, I have to get used to the fact that I'm not able to train six hours a day, six days a week, and alter my expectations of what I do to stay happy and healthy.'

Simone Biles calls Riley Gaines 'sick' following comments about high school team with trans player

Olympic champion Simone Biles has labelled former US swimmer and political activist Riley Gaines as "sick" and a "sore loser", following a social media post about a high school softball team. Biles, the winner of 11 Olympic medals in gymnastics, including seven gold, responded to a post from Gaines where the former college swimmer mocked moderators for turning comments off the social media platform X when announcing the champions of a high school softball competition. The account for the Minnesota State High School League posted a picture of the Chaplin Park girls' team celebrating their win of the Class AAAA state championship. Chaplin Park has a trans player on their team. "Comments off lol … To be expected when your star player is a boy," Gaines wrote on X. Gaines has been outspoken against trans athletes competing in women's and girls' sports, after she tied fifth with trans athlete Lia Thomas in the 200-metre freestyle at the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships. On Saturday, AEST, Biles responded to Gaines's comments on the high school picture and said the former college swimmer bullied people because she "lost a race". "You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles wrote. "You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports. "But instead … You bully them … One thing's for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around." Biles has been a strong advocate for the safety of athletes, especially around mental health. Gaines responded to Biles by accusing her of helping "men stealing championships in women's sports". "This is actually so disappointing. It's not my job or the job of any woman to figure out how to include men in our spaces," Gaines wrote. "You can uplift men stealing championships in women's sports with YOUR platform. "Men don't belong in women's sports and I say that with my full chest." Gaines has become a fierce advocate of trans athletes not being allowed to compete against women and girls. She was at the White House in February when US President Donald Trump signed an executive order excluding transgender girls and women from female sports. After the president's order, Gaines described herself as feeling "cheated, betrayed, and violated" for competing against Thomas during her college swimming career. "I wish I could've told the girl in this photo what was to come in 2025. She felt cheated, betrayed, and violated," she wrote on X with an image of her and Thomas on a podium. "I'm just glad that girl trusted God and took a leap of faith by stating the obvious when it wasn't popular. It was true then and it's true now. He's a man."
