The 207th Royal St. John's Regatta is a go

Yahooa day ago
The 207th Royal St. John's Regatta is officially a go organizers who made the call early Wednesday morning while gathered along the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake.
The regatta is North America's oldest continuous sporting event, typically running on the first Wednesday each August.
Keith White, vice president of the Royal St. John's Regatta Committee, said the decision to proceed was unanimous.
"It was a quick decision. We looked at a number of factors, weather, wind of course, temperatures," he said.
"We look forward to seeing you lake-side throughout the day."
The annual event has only been moved a few times in its history — this year because of the Canada Summer Games, which begins on Aug. 6 and will make use of the historic lake over the event's two weeks.
This is the first year the rowing event will have an open category for all rowers, regardless of their gender.
The event draws thousands of people who line the shores of the lake for a full day of races, games of chance and food.
The regatta is unique in part because of its fixed-seat rowing and its status as a mid-week, weather-dependent municipal holiday.

Léon Marchand tries to break his own 200 IM world record at the swim worlds in Singapore

SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand of France is out to break his own world record in Thursday's 200-meter individual medley at the swimming world championships in Singapore. If you missed it, Marchand only set the record on Wednesday in the semifinals at the worlds — 1 minute, 52.69 seconds. That shattered the old mark of 1:54.00 held by American Ryan Lochte since 2011. Of course, Marchand's victory is almost assured. The only question is by how much. A four-time gold medalist a year ago in the Paris Olympics, Marchand will share the stage on Day 5 with Canada's Summer McIntosh. McIntosh will go for her third medal in Singapore, this time in the 200 freestyle. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia and American Regan Smith are the main rivals. She has already won gold in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle. McIntosh is bidding for five individual gold medals in Singapore after winning three individual Olympic gold medals in Paris. Yu Zidi, the 12-year-old Chinese swimmer, is the eighth-fastest qualifier in the field as she tries to reach the podium. She was fourth in the 200 IM. Three other finals are on the day's program and the Americans have shots. The United States has won only three gold medals in Singapore with the team battling a stomach bug picked up in training camp in Thailand. Head coach Greg Meehan has suggested team health is improving. In the men's 100 freestyle, American Jack Alexy and Romanian David Popovici were the quickest qualifiers. Popovici has already won the 200 free in Singapore. He was the gold medalist at 200 in Paris, and took bronze in the 100. American Regan Smith has the quickest time in the 50 backstroke followed very closely by Lauren Cox of Britain, American Katharine Berkoff, and Wan Letian of China. The last final of the day is the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay. __ AP sports:

Raducanu reaches third round in Montreal

Emma Raducanu continued to build momentum before next month's US Open with a straight-set win over American Peyton Stearns at the Canadian Open. British number one Raducanu, a shock champion at the New York slam in 2021, progressed to the third round 6-2 6-4. The 22-year-old has won five of her six matches during the North American summer hard-court swing, after reaching the Washington Open last week. She will next play Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova, after the American fifth seed defeated New Zealand's Lulu Sun 6-4 7-6 (7-5). World number 33 Raducanu proved too strong for 32nd seed Stearns and has now won all three meetings against her. An early break put her in control of the first set before she took her sixth set point on her opponent's serve. Raducanu trailed 4-2 after falling a break down in the second, but produced an impressive finish with a run of four consecutive games to clinch victory. "I'm really happy with how I came through in that match," Raducanu said. "I kind of lost my focus at some moments in the second set and she took advantage, but very happy that I came through against a top opponent and happy to extend my stay in Montreal. "I just want to say thank you [to supporters], I saw the Union Jack in clutch moments and I was actually born in Canada, so to me it means so much to do well here."
