Beautiful family detail as Dragons confirm signing of Maroons Origin player
Queensland State of Origin representative Josh Kerr has had a week to savour after welcoming his first child with fiancee Dijana, and signing a two-year deal to rejoin the Dragons in 2026. The Dolphins star admits he was keen to stay at his boyhood club, but a salary cap squeeze ultimately forced him out of Redcliffe, paving the way for Kerr to return to the club where his NRL career began. Kerr spent four seasons at the Dragons and played 68 games after making his NRL debut with the club in 2019. But he's been playing some of the best footy of his career after realising a dream to return to Redcliffe and play for the Dolphins, where he's learnt under master coach Wayne Bennett and current mentor, Kristian Woolf. The 29-year-old enforcer's barnstorming displays and off-loading prowess has helped the Dolphins surge to eighth on the ladder and earned him selection in Billy Slater's Maroons Origin squad this year. And while he would have loved to remain in Queensland with his fiancee and baby boy Atlas - who was born last Tuesday - the move was ultimately best for Kerr and his young family. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Josh Kerr (@joshmkerr) "It has been a fairytale to play for my home-town team in the NRL," Kerr told AAP. "I grew up thinking Queensland Cup was the pinnacle. Then I got to be coached by the super coach Wayne Bennett at Redcliffe in the NRL. I was so grateful. "I love the Dragons. They gave me my first opportunity and allowed me to live out my NRL dream. I am really excited at the prospect of going back. The Dolphins had no cap space for me. I was gutted and heartbroken because I'd done everything they wanted me to, but they put the club first. "CEO Terry Reader and Woolfy (coach Kristian Woolf) did everything they could to keep me, but they said I had to look after my family. A few clubs were interested, which I won't name out of respect, but the Dragons came in late." Josh Kerr set for reunion with Shane Flanagan at the Dragons Kerr is set to reunite with Dragons coach Shane Flanagan, who was an assistant at the Red V the last time Kerr was there, and a man he often turned to for support. Wollongong is also close to his heart and it's where his fiancee and her family grew up. "When I was struggling I leant on Shane a lot for coaching advice. He helped me a lot. He is a tough coach and I need that in my life," Kerr added. "Since I've come home to Queensland I have bought my first house, got engaged, had my first kid and I'm playing the best football of my career. I left the Dragons as a boy. I have become a man and I get the opportunity to go back and be a better man and player." The Dragons' Wollongong home holds a special place for Kerr and his financee, who are excited to return to the area and plan on expanding their family. And after welcoming baby Atlas into the world last week, the Dragons recruit explained the mythical significance behind his son's name. "Atlas was a Titan in Greek mythology tasked with holding up the heavens on his shoulders. I want to have a big family and I wanted my firstborn son to have a name like Atlas with that responsibility of being the big brother. "My first thought is to make sure he has a roof over his head and a bellyful of food, as does Dijana. Dijana was born in Belgrade in Serbia. There was a civil war and her hard-working parents came here as refugees and built a life and raised a family in Wollongong." Kerr's new deal means he has a chance to do the same. with AAP

Hammer blow for Cronulla Sharks as star suspended for rest of NRL regular season
Things have gone from bad to worse for the Cronulla Sharks after their shock loss to the Dragons on Saturday, with Briton Nikora copping a three-game ban that means his regular season is over. The Kiwi second-rower was sin-binned in the dying stages of the Sharks' 22-14 loss on Saturday after racing out of the line and hitting Dragons winger Corey Allan high. On Sunday, the NRL match review committee hit Nikora with a grade-two careless high tackle charge. Because it's his third offence it carries a four-week suspension (three with an early guilty plea). The Sharks have a bye in Round 25, meaning they only have three games remaining in the regular season. Even if Nikora pleads guilty and accepts the three-game ban, he won't play again this year until the NRL finals. But considering the Sharks are seventh and haven't been setting the world on fire, there's no guarantee they'll even make it. Craig Fitzgibbon's side are on 28 points after their loss to the Dragons, just two points ahead of the Dolphins in eighth and Roosters in ninth. The Sea Eagles are lurking on 24 points in 10th, and even the Dragons are a mathematical chance to make the finals on 22 points. Cronulla had won four in a row before their loss to the Dragons, but their form hasn't been spectacular. They only narrowly beat the last-placed Rabbitohs 14-12 in Round 21, despite Souths having a plethora of players out injured. The Sharks could opt to challenge Nikora's charge at the NRL judiciary, but he'd cop a four-game ban if unsuccessful. That would mean he misses the first week of the finals - but only if the Sharks make it. Briton Nikora's regular season is now over. — The SuperCoach Whisperer (@SCWhisperer) August 10, 2025 Sharks rue missed chance to shake-up NRL top-four On Saturday night, Fitzgibbon lamented a spurned opportunity for his team's top-four ambitions after they failed to fire against the 11th-placed Dragons. Cronulla only play one top-eight team in the final five rounds of the regular season, and were expected to charge into the top-four. But they'll now need to rely on Penrith losing twice and the New Zealand Warriors to also drop points if they are to book a qualifying final spot. Fitzgibbon admitted Cronulla missed a chance to shake up the top four, as the Dragons scored their first win over the Sharks in five years. "We had an opportunity today and we didn't take it," Fitzgibbon said. "I thought the game had no rhythm to it at all ... it was a poor discipline performance from us. We opened the door and showed we were susceptible, and they took it." RELATED: Raiders rocked as young Canberra star signs with Penrith Panthers Jett Cleary could be handed NRL debut in stunning development Eight charges handed down after Roosters and Dolphins clash Meanwhile, the match review committee has handed down eight charges after the Roosters' fiery win over the Dolphins. Spencer Leniu, Kurt Donoghoe and Francis Molo all copped two charges each, with Molo facing a two-game ban for a grade-two carless high tackle on Naufahu Whyte. Leniu copped two fines for his role in an ugly melee that erupted in the first half, while Whyte and Aublix Tawha were also fined for the same incident. And Donoghoe copped two separate fines for a high tackle on Billy Smith and shoulder charge on Leniu.

'Officially lost the plot': Premiership winners level damning accusation against NRL
Jamie Soward has led a chorus of criticism against the state of some of the modern rules in the NRL, taking exception to incidents in two games on Saturday. Controversy erupted in both the Dragons v Sharks and Roosters v Dolphins games over refereeing decisions that had fans and commentators shaking their heads. The first occurred when Cronulla were awarded a penalty try when the Bunker official ruled that Tyrell Sloan tackled Teig Wilton in the air and prevented him from scoring. Sloan leapt to try and catch the ball, and ended up holding Wilton up over the line when the Sharks winger came down with it. But the Bunker official ruled the Dragons winger deliberately switched from trying to catch the ball to tackling Wilton in the air, which would have been extremely difficult in a split-second. The call to award a penalty try went against the precedent set all year, in which similar incidents have drawn penalties or sin-bins but never a penalty try. Taking to social media, Dragons premiership winner Soward declared the NRL and it's officials have "officially lost the plot". He wrote: "WHAT A JOKE. No contact on kickers. No contest in the air. What are we doing?" In commentary for Fox League, legendary premiership winners Kevin Walters and Steve Roach were both dumbfounded. "Come on. That is breaking new ground now," Walters said in relation to the ruling. Roach added: "That is a ridiculous try being awarded there. That is terrible. It wasn't dangerous. One of the great things about our game is not only those who score the tries, but the blokes who can stop them." Dragons coach Shane Flanagan was exasperated despite his team scoring a 22-14 victory. "I'll have a busy day on Monday (speaking to the NRL) because it's making it so hard on us," he said after the game. "I won't say any more on it, but I was really disappointed with a lot of decisions." Sin-binnings cause controversy in Roosters-Dolphins game Unfortunately for the NRL it wasn't the only drama to come out of Saturday's games. There was also controversy when two players from each team were sin-binned early in the Roosters' 64-12 thrashing of the Dolphins. Roosters prop Spencer Leniu sparked a melee when he squared up as if to fight Aublix Tawha after his side's second try. Leniu and Tawha were sent to the bin for 10 minutes, as were Naufahu Whyte of the Roosters and Francis Molo of the Dolphins. RELATED: Raiders rocked as young Canberra star signs with Penrith Panthers Jett Cleary could be handed NRL debut in stunning development Speaking after the game, Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf questioned why any of his players were binned. 'A couple of minutes before that we had a very slightly high tackle and blokes run in everywhere to get a penalty," he said. 'I don't get how we're allowed to do that. And the opposition score, two of their players come over with pushing, we're standing in the dead-ball area, two guys come over pushing and shoving and shaping up. I don't know what our blokes are supposed to do, so I just can't understand those sin-binnings at all.' Referee Gerard Sutton had warned both captains just before the incident that players would be binned for running in. Roosters coach Trent Robinson agreed that "four off was a lot" of players to bin. 'It seemed like possibly one from each side would have been enough because nothing really happened," he added. Soward was once again left fuming, declaring the four sin-binnings changed the complexion of what had been a brilliant start to the game. "Not one punch thrown," he wrote. "2 desperate teams with the season on the line. Surely we have to expect some intensity in the game. That is a joke. 4 players in the bin. Seriously we have lost the plot." We have officially lost the plot on the tackled in the air.
