Vaughan, Ont., resident fires gun to stop Lamborghini theft, charged alongside 4 suspects: police
Police say as many as six suspects are in custody following a number of break-and-enters in Vaughan on June 12, 2025. A Vaughan, Ont., resident who fired a gun at five suspects who were attempting to steal a white Lamborghini has been charged, police say. York Regional Police were called to Pine Heights Drive, near Major MacKenzie Drive West and Highway 400, at approximately 4 a.m. Thursday for a report of a vehicle theft in progress. While an emergency dispatcher was on the phone with the caller, police said, the sound of gunshots was heard. It's unclear who made the 911 call. Police previously stated that the resident successfully 'interrupted' the attempted auto theft and when officers arrived at the scene, they took four suspects (three adults and one youth) into custody. One other suspect is outstanding. No injuries were reported. Const. James Dickson told CP24 that the suspects were also charged with possession of property obtained by crime as the vehicle they drove to the scene was stolen. Initially, police said that the suspects were attempting to break into homes in the area. However, Dickson clarified that while police don't believe a break-and-enter took place, the suspects were on the resident's property at the time of the incident. Images from the scene showed that a Lamborghini remains parked in the driveway. Dickson said one of the adult suspects was on probation and the youth suspect was on a release order for unrelated charges. The resident, who rents the property and was identified by police only as a 35-year-old male, was charged with discharging a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Use of firearm not 'appropriate' in this case: police Dickson spoke about the resident's choice to discharge his firearm, described by police as a long gun, and said it was 'not the appropriate one' in this case. 'Proportionality and reasonability is entirely determined by the courts,' he said. 'Every case is distinct and different. And the biggest thing we want to hammer home is that there's always a very considerable danger to other people that are around (when a gun is discharged). A car can be replaced but a human life cannot.' Police are still trying to determine if the suspects were armed.

Police still trying to locate family of elderly woman found ‘disoriented' at Vaughan bus stop
Wai Lai Wong, 82, is shown in this photo provided by York Regional Police. Police in York Region are continuing to look for the family of an elderly woman who was found 'disoriented' at a Vaughan bus stop earlier this week and has been unable to provide her home address to investigators since then. Police were contacted by transit officers at around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday after the senior was found waiting at a bus stop in the area of Highway 7 West and Millway Avenue. Police say the woman has identified herself as Wai Lai Wong, 82. However, they say investigators have been 'unable to confirm her identity, determine her place of residence or locate any family members.' Police first issued a public appeal for information on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, York Regional Police said they have reached out to neighbouring police services but are not aware of any missing persons reports involving the woman. Wong is current receiving care at a local hospital, police say. She is described as Asian, with a thin build and short hair. Police have released several images of Wong as they continue to appeal for information. 'We are asking anyone who recognizes Ms. Wong or has information about her family or place of residence to contact the #4 District CIB as soon as possible,' a news release issued by police on Wednesday states.

Police say as many as six suspects are in custody following a number of break-and-enters in Vaughan on June 12, 2025. Police say a Vaughan homeowner who fired a gun to stop an auto theft that was taking place Thursday morning has been charged along with four suspects. York Regional Police previously told CP24 that a group of suspects was allegedly trying to break into homes and steal vehicles northwest of Major MacKenzie Drive and Highway 400 at approximately 4 a.m. before they were 'interrupted' by a homeowner. In an update, police said the homeowner discharged a firearm in the course of an attempted vehicle theft. No injuries were reported. 'He has been charged, as well as the four suspects we arrested – three adults and one youth,' a police spokesperson said. Nothing was stolen over the course of the alleged break-and-enter or auto theft attempts. Police have not identified the homeowner or the suspects and it's not clear which charges either party is facing. Police said there is no threat to public safety.
