CSIR-IICT celebrates National Technology Day 2025 with ASTC annual convention
Hyderabad, May 11 (UNI) The CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), in collaboration with the Academy for Science, Technology and Communication (ASTC) and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Hyderabad Chapter, celebrated National Technology Day 2025 along with the ASTC Annual Convention at the CSIR-IICT campus on Sunday.
Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Dev Varma, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, he stated, 'This is the age of research, of technology, of finding ways to make the world a better place.'
He also lauded the efforts of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in democratizing access to science and research, expressing hope that CSIR institutions will continue to deliver transformative contributions to society.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr D Srinivasa Reddy, Director of CSIR-IICT, highlighted the importance of scientific innovation in tackling global challenges.
He said, 'The theme this year is very meaningful. It reminds us that science and technology must help solve the problems we face today.'
He also showcased CSIR-IICT's key contributions, including compostable plastics, affordable sanitary pads, and AGR technology that converts organic waste into biogas.
Dr Vinay Kumar Nandicoori, Director of CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), emphasised the central role of technology in CSIR's mission. He discussed CCMB's pioneering work in rare disease diagnostics, wildlife forensics, DNA fingerprinting, and the development of a low-cost screening test for sickle cell anaemia priced under Rs 100.
Dr Prakash Kumar, Director of CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), noted that "the courage to think differently creates impact." He outlined NGRI's initiatives to build an earthquake-resilient society through mega-projects assessing and mitigating seismic hazards in the Himalayas, Ganga Plains, and other vulnerable areas.
Delivering the ASTC Foundation Lecture on 'Gut Microbiome – The Science & Application,' Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, underlined the critical role of the gut microbiome in modern medicine. He explained its profound influence on immunity, metabolism, mental health, and its potential in managing a wide range of disorders.
In the Presidential Address, Dr Ch Mohan Rao, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council–ASTC and NASI Hyderabad Chapter, gave an overview of the inception of National Science Day and highlighted the ongoing activities of NASI.
The event also featured the release of the latest issue of ASTC Communications, the felicitation of contributing authors, and the presentation of ASTC Awards in categories including Science Popularization, Excellence in Science and Technology, and Lifetime Achievement.
Dr D Srinivasa Reddy and Dr S Venkata Mohan, Director of NEERI and former Chief Scientist at CSIR-IICT, were honoured with the Excellence in Science and Technology Award.

POWERGRID, PEC join hands to set up training & research centre
Chandigarh: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has partnered with Punjab Engineering College (deemed to be university), Chandigarh, to set up a state-of-the-art POWERGRID Centre of Excellence at PEC. It will provide students, researchers, and faculty hands-on experience in cutting-edge power sector technologies. Prof Bhatia thanked POWERGRID for supporting this initiative, which promises to boost research and learning opportunities at PEC. RK Tyagi, recalling his days as a PEC student, described the centre as POWERGRID's contribution to India's vision of a unified and modern power grid. Chief secretary Rajeev Verma said the centre will serve as a hub for innovation and contribute to India's goals for energy security and a sustainable, zero-emission future. POWERGRID, a Maharatna company under the ministry of power, operates a vast transmission network across northern India, including Punjab and Chandigarh, with a focus on technology-driven efficiency and reliability. The MoU is part of its CSR initiative.

Mukesh Ambani announces 151cr endowment to his alma mater ICT
Mumbai: When Mukesh Ambani — India's richest man and chairman of Reliance Industries — returned to his alma mater, the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), he didn't just bring memories and his speech. He brought a tribute. A Rs 151-crore endowment, the largest in the institute's history, was announced on Friday. The occasion was the launch of Anita Patil's 'The Divine Scientist', a biography of Padma Vibhushan professor Man Mohan Sharma, described by many as the towering intellect who shaped Indian chemical engineering talent. When speaking of Guru Dakshina, Ambani announced the grant of Rs 151 crore to ICT, as per Sharma's instructions. "When he tells us something, we just told me, 'Mukesh, you have to do something big for ICT', and I am pleased to announce that for Prof Sharma," Ambani said, referring to the grant. "Most respected Prof Sharma," he addressed everyone, "my fellow Udcitians, coming to UDCT campus, I still call it that, has always felt like coming to a sacred temple. Prof Sharma, my warm respects to you as my most respected guru, my mentor, and my enduring source of inspiration." Praising Patil, he said: "It is a Herculean task to chronicle the life of a legend like Sharma." "I chose UDCT over IIT-Bombay," Ambani said, recalling the conviction of youth. That conviction was sealed when he attended Sharma's very first lecture. "I realised he is an alchemist, not of metals, but minds: he has the power to transform curiosity into knowledge, knowledge into commercial value, and both knowledge and commercial value into everlasting wisdom." Crediting the rise of the Indian chemical industry to Sharma's efforts, Ambani referred to him as a 'Rashtra Guru — a Guru of Bharat'. "He is our Yugpurush," said prof J B Joshi, former head of ICT. Not with reverence alone, but with the clarity of someone who saw how Sharma's life was distilled into a single principle: "Be a good teacher, do research at the frontier of knowledge, and use that for industry and society." Prof G D Yadav, former head at ICT, offered a staggering number — 1,300 PhDs trace their academic lineage to Sharma, directly or through those he mentored. "He is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent," said Yadav, invoking a title rarely uttered outside epics: "Bhramarishi." Proposed extension centre of CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology to focus on core areas of research and product development
A satellite centre planned by the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) at the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park here at Thonnakkal will focus on core areas of research and product development, including solar-driven hydrogen production from wastewater. A State Cabinet meeting on Thursday (June 5) gave the nod for establishing the 'Extension Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship.' The Cabinet approval also included allocation of 10 acres of land on a 90-year lease at the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park. Collaborative hub 'The proposed CSIR-NIIST innovation centre will serve as a collaborative hub fostering interdisciplinary research, product development, and entrepreneurship,' NIIST officials said. Major initiatives planned under it include a pilot plant for the solar-driven production of hydrogen from wastewater, an AYUSH manufacturing and standardisation hub, a production line for biopolymer and bio-based products, a bio-enabler bio manufacturing unit and a regional resource development centre. It will also be the first satellite centre of NIIST, a laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). NIIST described the decision to establish the centre as a strategic move aligned with its mission to drive sustainable, inclusive innovation and reinforce Kerala's position as a hub for science-driven entrepreneurship. The Bio 360 Life Sciences Park is a flagship initiative of the State government's Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC).
