A viral video showing individuals spraying water at police officers was recorded during the Songkran Festival in Pengkalan Hulu, Perak, and was not an act of protest.
This annual celebration, known as the Water Festival, is part of the traditional Thai New Year festivities observed by the Siamese community in Malaysia.
The video, which circulated widely on Facebook, initially led viewers to believe that the public was using water pistols on the police to express dissatisfaction.
However, an investigation by Bernama's MyCheck.my revealed that the event took place during the National Level Songkran Festival, officiated by the National Unity Minister in collaboration with the Siamese Association of Malaysia.
The police confirmed that the "incident" was actually part of the festivities held at the event and posed no threat or disrespect to the officers, who were on duty escorting the minister.
Pengkalan Hulu OCPD Supt Zulkepli Ibrahim stated that the incident was part of the celebrations and not intended to be a hostile act.
The Songkran Festival has been celebrated at Kampung Tasek in Pengkalan Hulu for the past 50 years.
It involves the playful splashing of water to symbolise purification and the washing away of bad luck.
The police urged the public to avoid making speculative or discordant comments regarding the video.
The festival is a symbol of unity, prosperity, and peace, with participation from leaders and communities of various ethnic backgrounds in Malaysia.

ALOR SETAR, June 5 (Bernama) -- Three students from the Jitra National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) were killed in an accident involving two motorcycles and a car at Kilometre 49.4 on the North-South Expressway (southbound) near here today. Kota Setar police chief ACP Siti Nor Salawati Saad said they received information about the accident at 2.10 pm, involving two motorcycles – a Yamaha 135LC and a Yamaha Y16ZR – and a Naza Citra car. She said the dead were identified as Muhamad Habil Mohd Sobri from Gurun, Muhammad Fahmi Jamel from Jeniang, Sik, and Muhamad Arif Aifan Derani from Bukit Selambau, Sungai Petani. "The accident is believed to have occurred when the Yamaha 135LC motorcyclist lost control and crashed into the rear of a car that had stopped in the emergency lane. "In the crash, two motorcyclists and one pillion rider died at the scene, while another individual was injured. The car's driver and passengers were unharmed," she said. Negeri Sembilan Commercial Crime Cases Rise, Losses Hit RM47.74 Million
SEREMBAN, June 5 (Bernama) -- Commercial crime cases in Negeri Sembilan have increased, with losses reaching RM47.74 million from January to May this year, compared to RM33.84 million in the same period last year. During this period, 1,351 commercial crime cases were reported in Negeri Sembilan, compared to 1,033 cases reported the previous year, said state deputy police chief SAC Muhammad Idzam Jaafar. He said this reflected an increase of 318 cases, or 30.8 per cent, while the total losses also rose by RM13.9 million, or 41.1 per cent, compared to the same period last year. "Online scams were the main type of commercial crime reported in the state, constituting 82 per cent of all commercial crime cases. "These scams, involving telecommunications fraud (480 cases), online purchase scams (248), non-existent investment schemes (208), fake loan scams (151), and love or parcel scams (22), have resulted in losses exceeding RM42 million," he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, he said police had detected a new phone scam, where perpetrators pose as Touch' n Go card agents and police officers. Muhammad Idzam said the scammers would claim that the victim's Touch 'n Go card had been misused by a third party and that the victim was allegedly involved in money laundering and drug-related crimes. "To resolve the issue, the victim is asked to provide details of their assets, including cash and jewellery. They are then instructed to transfer money to a specified bank account and hand over their jewellery to a runner for investigation purposes. "Following investigations, police traced and seized jewellery that had been pawned by the runner at gold shops and pawnshops around Selangor," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
