New evidence in Tory Lanez case sparks fresh debate

The Tory Lanez saga has taken another dramatic turn. On Wednesday, 14 May, Lanez's legal team dropped a bombshell at a press conference in Los Angeles.
They claim new evidence proves Lanez did not shoot Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. Instead, they point at Megan's former best friend, Kelsey Harris.
The fresh twist comes from Bradley James, a former bodyguard for Kelsey Harris. James says he overheard Harris admit to firing the gun.
'She had the gun, she fired it three times. Mr Peterson (Tory Lanez) grabbed her arm and knocked it down. The gun then fired two more times,' James revealed at the press conference.
He says his conscience wouldn't let him stay silent while 'a man sits in prison for something he didn't do'.
James's claims line up with the testimony of Sean Kelly, the only neutral witness at the original trial, according to Hot 97.
Kelly said he saw two women fighting before two men intervened. Shots then rang out from the passenger side, where Harris was sitting.
Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year sentence. His legal team insists he never fired the gun.
'Mr Peterson never shot anybody. Never even touched the gun,' said attorney Walter Roberts.
He also criticised the investigation, noting that only Lanez's DNA was tested, even though unknown DNA was found on the weapon.
Gianno Caldwell, a journalist and Lanez supporter, was blunt. 'Mr Peterson was never given a fair trial, free from bias, political interference and media-driven pressure,' he said.
Caldwell also questioned why Harris pleaded the Fifth Amendment when she wasn't under investigation. 'Why plead the fifth? What also shocked me is the prosecution gave her immunity for what?' he asked.
Tory Lanez's father, Sonstar Peterson, made an emotional appeal. 'It was supposed to be a forum in which it would be decided based on all the circumstances.
But it had already been decided behind closed doors,' he said. Supporters argue that this is a 'travesty of justice' and are calling on California's governor to review the case.
Neither Megan Thee Stallion nor Kelsey Harris has responded to these new claims. The evidence has yet to be verified by a court, but the story is far from over.
For South Africans, the case is a reminder that justice must be fair, transparent, and free from bias, regardless of where it happens in the world.
As Diana London, CEO of the Secret Weapon Agency, put it: 'Tory Lanez doesn't want special treatment. He's demanding equal treatment. When we get it wrong, we erode trust in the rule of law itself'.

BackaBuddy campaign launched to repatriate body of Cape Town woman murdered in US

A BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign has been launched to assist the family of Kim White Towne, a 32-year-old Capetonian who was murdered by her American husband in Chantilly in the state of Virginia. The campaign aims to raise funds for the repatriation of her remains to South Africa so that she can be laid to rest among her loved ones. Towne's tragic death, reportedly at the hands of her husband during a domestic dispute, has left her family devastated and facing a financially overwhelming situation. The campaign, organised by Lauren Delcarme, is titled 'Bring Kim Home' and, at the time of publishing, has already raised R88 404 of its R108 000 target. 'Kim was a vibrant and cherished member of our family whose warmth, kindness and gentle spirit touched everyone she met,' said Delcarme on the campaign page. 'Her sudden and untimely death has left us in profound grief, and we are faced with the heartbreaking task of bringing her home to South Africa.' Delcarme noted that the costs of repatriation are substantial and include cremation, legal documentation, and international transport, among other formalities. The family is appealing to the public for any contributions to help reunite Kim with her family in Cape Town. Kim White Towne, originally from the Blouberg area, had moved to the US to build a life with her husband, with whom she shared a young son. The BackaBuddy page has been flooded with messages of support and heartfelt condolences from friends, family, and even strangers moved by the family's plight. Those wishing to contribute can visit the official BackaBuddy campaign via and search for 'Bring Kim Home' or donate directly to the listed banking details on the campaign page. Malawian national arrested in KZN over a series of robberies

Police have arrested a 26-year-old Malawian national in Verulam CBD, KwaZulu-Natal, in connection with a series of robberies. A victim allegedly recognised the suspect near Todd Street by the railway station on Monday 2 June and alerted others, who then assaulted him before officers arrived. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a group made up primarily of foreign nationals had already begun assaulting the suspect by the time officers arrived. The confrontation began when one of the robbery victims spotted the man and confronted him with the help of bystanders. Two weeks ago, the suspect allegedly forced his way into a home in Southridge, brandished a firearm, and robbed a man of his cellphone in front of the victim's minor daughter. Since the incident, the victim had been searching for the suspect and recognised him in the Verulam CBD. During questioning, the suspect admitted to selling the stolen phone to a foreign national in Durban. RUSA officers confirmed his involvement in at least three other robberies in Temple Valley. Officers recovered the firearm used in the crimes, later identified as a replica blank gun. RUSA officers restrained the suspect and handed him over to SAPS Verulam, where he remains in custody pending further investigation.
