Master plan in works for development of Durga temple
Vijayawada: Minister for endowments Anam Ramanarayana Reddy announced that a comprehensive development plan is being prepared for the development of Sri Kanaka Durga temple to meet the future needs of devotees over the next 50 years. This initiative is being taken as part of the Swarnandhra Vision 2047 to ensure world-class infrastructure and amenities at one of the most revered temples in Andhra Pradesh, said the endowments minister.
Ramanarayana Reddy along with the Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath conducted a review with the Durga temple administration officials on Monday. The minister along with MP discussed the proposed development works. He said the Master Plan works include construction of ghat road connecting Kummaripalem Centre to the temple, modernisation of queue lines, creation of vehicle parking facilities, establishment of Prasadam counters, Annadanam halls and tonsure centres, construction of waiting halls, restrooms and installation of escalators, and lifts for the convenience of devotees.
He said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is regularly reviewing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and giving suggestions for the development of the temple. He informed that a review meeting is scheduled for June 28 in the presence of Vijayawada West MLA Sujana Chowdary to finalise the master plan. .
MP Kesineni Sivanath said the development works are being planned to serve devotees for the next 50 years. He said facilities for the devotees are very important in the master plan.
He highlighted that efforts will be taken to enhance the spiritual ambiance around the temple while also focusing on environmental conservation. Durga temple executive engineers Koteswara Rao and Rambabu, director of Siddhartha College B Panduranga Rao, retired engineer Narayana Murthy and other officials were present.

Corporation plans to take up restoration of Virugambakkam Canal
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to take up a ₹30-crore project to restore the Virugambakkam Canal amid complaints about garbage disposal and unchecked illegal sewer connections. 'In the 70s, water never entered our houses. Now, there are floods every year,' said Venkat, a long-time resident of Virugambakkam, recalling the times when the canal water was clean, and homes remained free from nundation even during heavy rain. The Virugambakkam-Arumbakkam Canal runs for 6.36 km from Bhuvaneshwari Nagar to the Cooum River, and has a total catchment area of 30.63 sq. km., according to the GCC. 'These days, there are weeds, plastic, sewage, and garbage all over,' Mr. Venkat said, pointing to thick hyacinth choking the waterway, and garbage being dumped regularly. 'In the last two years, Chinmaya Nagar and Sai Nagar were severely affected by inundation,' he further said. He blamed the deterioration of the canal on illegal sewer connections and unregulated encroachments. 'Last year, the Chennai Corporation cleared debris from the canal after the local residents filed complaints. But the overall situation has not improved,' he added. According to the Corporation's Detailed Project Report (DPR), the 39 storm-water/sewer outlets were filled to their capacity during the Northeast monsoon, leading to the overflow. To address this, a rejuvenation project of the canal has been planned in Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, and Valasaravakkam Zones (VIII, IX, X and XI). It includes sludge removal, bored piling, and canal fencing. The project has been tendered out, and is expected to be finalised by the first week of July, an official at the Storm Water Drain Department said. A total of ₹5.20 crore is allocated for the removal of sludge, silt, debris, and water weeds using high-capacity dredging machinery, and ₹3.13 crore for concrete bored piling works. Other key allocations include ₹3.25 crore for reinforcement steel works, ₹3.97 crore for reinforced cement concrete works, and ₹5.53 crore for iron chain-link fencing along the canal stretch, the GCC said.

Station Service Road in Velachery set for a major revamp
The pockmarked Station Service Road in Velachery which has turned into a nightmare for motorists will soon undergo repairs, as the Chennai Corporation is all set set to take up improvement work on the stretch. The service road which was originally constructed by the Southern Railway and runs parallel to the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Velachery to Taramani railway station is a boon for motorists to escape the heavily-congested Taramani Link Road to reach Rajiv Gandhi Salai at Taramani. The service road was paved to create access road to Perungudi and Taramani railway stations for the residents of East Velachery. Southern Railway handed over the 3.20-kilometre service road to the Chennai Corporation last year after it faced difficulties in maintaining the road. The civic body had, in the initial stages, installed the street lights for the road more than two years ago. The Station Service road had become unmotorable after it was dug up a few years ago for installing high tension underground power cable from the Taramani substation to Guindy substation for improving the electricity network by Tantransco. S. Harshvardhan, a resident of Madipakkam, said the road has become busy during morning and evening peak hours as hundreds of motorists bound to Rajiv Gandhi Salai use this stretch. However the condition of the road is bad with the concrete poured over the gravel to patch up the dug-up portion of the road having worn out. Half the two-lane road cannot be used. The road becomes slushy with water stagnating in puddles whenever there is even a drizzle as the storm water drain network constructed on both sides of the road has been damaged in several places. Social activist S. Kumararaja said the road was also once used by pedestrians who are now avoiding the uneven stretch riddled with potholes. The macro canal constructed to prevent flooding of residential colonies and help drain into the Pallikaranai marshland has been clogged with construction debris. A senior official of the Chennai Corporation said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was in the final stages of preparation as the entire upgradation and improvement works are to be executed at a total cost of Rs. 26 crore excluding the road relaying work. For the road repavement component, which is to be executed by Bus Route Road division, the cost comes to Rs. 8.09 crores. While the tender has been opened the work order for identifying the contractor was yet to be finalised. The senior civic official pointing out the road improvement project to be carried out under 'MRTS Sammoga Cholai cum healthwalk' similar to pedestrian plaza would have the following components of well paved footpath, dedicated cycling track, road markings with walkway and kerb paintings, open gym, toilet block and waiting shelters, would completely transform the road. New street lights along with high mast lamps at all the junctions have been proposed. Both the macro and micro drains running along the road would be fully renovated, tge official added.
