Man to appear in court for allegedly setting two women ablaze
A 35-year-old man IN Mpumalanga will face two charges of attempted murder when he appears at the Emalahleni Magistrate's Court on Tuesday following his arrest for allegedly setting two women on fire.
The suspect was arrested by police in connection with a brutal attack that took place on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, at approximately 6pm.
The incident has left two women fighting for their lives in the hospital with severe burn injuries.
Victims include mother of suspect's children
Police reports indicate the accused allegedly set fire to two women.
The first victim is a 21-year-old woman who is the mother of his children.
The second victim is a 23-year-old woman who is said to be related to the suspect, who reportedly became a casualty while attempting to intervene in the attack.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the severity of the victims' conditions.
'After the incident, the two female victims sustained serious burn wounds and were taken to hospital by a community member,' Mdhluli said.
Both women remain in critical condition. 'The two women are currently fighting for their lives in hospital,' Mdhluli stated.

Swift police response leads to arrest
Following the attack, community members reported the matter to the Vosman Police Station. Investigators moved quickly to track down the perpetrator.
'The matter was then reported to the police in Vosman and after an investigation was done, the suspect was traced and apprehended on the same night around 9pm, hence his court appearance,' Mdhluli explained.
The suspect was arrested just three hours after the incident occurred, demonstrating rapid police response to the crime.

Provincial commissioner condemns attack
The South African Police Service's acting provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the incident.
He emphasised the commitment of law enforcement to ensure justice for the victims.
Mkhwanazi vowed that police investigators will collaborate closely with prosecutors throughout the legal proceedings.
The swift arrest of the suspect reflects this commitment to pursuing justice.
We wish a speedy recovery to the two victims. We hereby make a clarion call to Faith-Based Organisations, Community leaders, and Civil Society Groups to continue to work with us as public servants, in fighting GBVF within the society,' the General said.

He is expected to appear in court on Thursday, August 7. Anti-gender-based violence organisation Ilitha Labantu expressed concern over the horrific incident. Speaking to IOL, the organisation's spokesperson, Siyabulela Monakali, said this tragedy is yet another painful reminder of the brutal and relentless violence that women continue to face in South Africa. 'It is made even more devastating by the fact that such atrocities appear to escalate during Women's Month, a time intended to honour the struggles and triumphs of women. Instead, we are confronted by acts of extreme cruelty that highlight the persistent crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in our country,' Monakali said. He said South Africa's femicide rate remains five times higher than the global average. 'These are not abstract statistics. They represent real lives lost, mothers, daughters and sisters, whose deaths often occur at the hands of those closest to them. What makes this moment particularly sad is not only the frequency of these killings but the sheer brutality with which they are carried out,' he said. Monakali said these acts of violence cannot be normalised. 'We cannot normalise this. It is not acceptable. And yet it continues, sustained by systemic failures that have allowed GBVF to thrive in a society where women's lives are consistently devalued. From inadequate policing to weak prosecutorial outcomes and the lack of safe alternatives for women at risk, these murders reflect a broader collapse in the structures meant to protect. 'The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory' are words that are ringing true for author Jackie Phamotse. This is after her book, The Tea Merchant, was nominated at this year's Sunday Times Literary Awards in the Fiction Prize category. 'The recognition means a lot to me, especially considering the book's release coincided with a challenging time in my life,' Phamotse told The Citizen. The Tea Merchant was released a year ago in August, following Phamotse's sentencing to two years of correctional supervision (house arrest) and ordered to perform community service by the Randburg Magistrate's Court. The judgment came after a six-year-long legal battle for defaming media moguls Romeo and Basetsana Kumalo over a tweet alleging that Romeo had engaged in a sexual encounter with another man. 'Being sentenced to two years of correctional supervision certainly adds a layer of sweetness to this nomination. It's a testament to the book's impact and resonance with readers,' shared Phamotse. Mpumalanga churchgoers robbed at gunpoint, shots fired inside
A group of women are left traumatised after two armed men stormed their church in Mkhuhlu near Hazyview yesterday and robbed them of cash and valuables. Mpumalanga News reports that members of the Pentecost Church were about to pray at 12:40 when the suspects, wearing balaclavas, entered the church. 'The robbers were armed and fired shots into the church ceiling. They demanded cellphones and collected wallets, handbags and vehicle keys. They also took the cash collection, amounting to R1 220, contributed by the church members,' says provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. The suspects fled in a white Toyota Fortuner belonging to a 61-year-old congregant. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Marite Trust, near the Carlton fuel station. Mdhluli says police recovered handbags and car keys from the vehicle, but the stolen cellphones and cash were missing. Several spent cartridges were also found inside the church. No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
