Penang To Host Unity Week With Focus On Grassroots Integration
Penang has been selected to host the 2025 National Unity Week, featuring a wide range of programmes designed to promote harmony through sports, cultural and artistic activities.
Running from this Thursday until July 20, the event will include the Rumah Kami exhibition showcasing 24 ethnic communities, replicas of Kadazandusun and Orang Asli longhouses, as well as exhibitions by government agencies, private sector organisations, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGO).
'Other highlights include MADANI sales, FoodUnites, traffic summons discounts, museum showcases and the cultural concert Malam Irama Sama-Sama Kita featuring top Malaysian artistes,' Rohai said in a radio interview with MutiaraFM today.
He said the event encourages cross-cultural interaction and shared experiences across ethnic and generational lines, key to bridging social divides, building empathy and strengthening national identity.
'More importantly, it promotes the core values of 'Understand, Respect and Accept', encouraging Malaysians to not only appreciate each other's backgrounds, but to embrace diversity as a national strength,' he said.
Rohai added that the initiative contributes to a sustainable unity ecosystem and positions national cohesion as a shared responsibility, not just a government mandate.
To further boost public engagement, the National Unity Ministry is organising a Jelajah Kembara Perpaduan roadshow, which began in Melaka on April 4–5 and has since reached Kedah, Kelantan, Johor, Perlis, Terengganu and Sabah.
Rohai called on Malaysians of all backgrounds to treat unity as a collective duty and a valuable legacy to be preserved with sincerity and awareness.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has proposed three new key collaborative initiatives under its ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 to strengthen regional cooperation in the creative sector, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. The initiatives are the ASEAN Co-Production Roundtable, a Green Filming and Sustainability Framework, and Youth Story Labs, aimed at promoting inclusive and forward-thinking narratives among the ASEAN youth generation. 'As part of our ASEAN Chairmanship, we hope to initiate three key areas of collaboration,' she said in her opening address at the ASEAN Film and TV Summit 2025, held in conjunction with the 8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest), here today. Teo said these efforts reflect Malaysia's commitment to making the region's creative industry more dynamic, future-ready and people-centred. She also highlighted the country's achievements in attracting global productions through the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI), which has supported 128 projects since 2013 with RM 419 million in rebates. The incentive has resulted in RM2.71 billion in direct investments into the local creative industry. Notable international productions include Sony Pictures and BBC's Lord of the Flies series filmed in Langkawi, while local animation Ejen Ali: The Movie 2 grossed RM 59 million across several markets, and Upin & Ipin expanded into gaming with a global release this month. Organised by National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), in collaboration with the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) and the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN), the summit provides a platform for policymakers, creators and investors to explore policy alignment and co-production opportunities. 'As the world faces new challenges, it is our shared stories that will connect us, inspire us, and carry ASEAN forward,' Teo said. Running until July 25, the summit will end with the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) on July 26, recognising excellence in ASEAN and international filmmaking.

Photo: Bernama At the recent launch of Melukis Dengan Hati: Biografi Perjalanan Seni 50 Tahun Karya Zunar at Pustaka Raja Tun Uda, Shah Alam, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim praised cartoonist Zunar for his steadfast efforts to revitalise the local art scene through politically charged works, despite many challenges. The Prime Minister noted that while Zunar's cartoons may be sharp and uncompromising, they offer deep insights into current issues that society must understand - and often carry significant political impact. "An artist's sketches are the outpouring of the heart, driven by conviction. When a work is created freely and sincerely, the risks it carries are equally great," said Anwar. "He (Zunar) grew up in a country where free artistic expression was restricted, and he too was affected by that atmosphere. "Young people should understand that the situation has now changed - we provide space for expression. We may not always agree with the works produced, nor do they necessarily align with our tastes or the interests of those in power, but that is the essence of a democratic environment." Describing Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, as a close friend, Anwar also said the public should show appreciation for the artist's contributions by supporting his newly launched book, as many of his earlier works were reproduced without permission. "There is no denying that his cartoons were popular, but previously there was no copyright protection. They were distributed and reprinted freely. So, we should repay him by purchasing the book, because for decades he contributed during the reform era, yet people did not buy his works - they simply reprinted them,' he said. K-Pop Star G-Dragon Appointed Honorary Ambassador For APEC Summit
SEOUL, July 23 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- K-pop star G-Dragon has been appointed honorary ambassador for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju in October, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said Wednesday. Yonhap News reported Kim announced the appointment on his Facebook page, describing G-Dragon as South Korea's "leading artist" who has "continuously demonstrated creativity and innovation," including by transmitting his music into space. "With 100 days to go until the summit, please watch the synergy between G-Dragon and the APEC summit!" he wrote.
