Judge issues temporary injunction against Trump administration cancellation of humanities grants
US District Judge Michael H. Simon, an appointee of President Barack Obama, issued a temporary stay on action taken in April by the National Endowment for the Humanities, saying the claims made by plaintiffs in the case were 'likely to succeed on their claim that the withholding of the funds at issue in this case is unconstitutional.'
Defendants' conduct reflects a 'deliberate decision to flout Congressional command and refuse to spend appropriated funds,' the opinion said, noting, 'The United States Constitution exclusively grants the power of the purse to Congress, not the President.'
The Department of Government Efficiency and the National Endowment for the Humanities canceled dozens of grants to state and local humanities' councils in April as part of President Donald Trump's cost-cutting efforts.
The Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Oregon Council for the Humanities filed suit in May to reverse the local funding cuts.
Adam Davis, executive director of the Oregon council, called the decision 'heartening and motivating. This is one step — among many that are needed — in the large, ongoing endeavor to knit our communities and the country closer together.'
The National Endowment for the Humanities did not immediately answer a phone call or email for comment.
Simon said in issuing the stay that the record contained 'unrebutted evidence of irreparable harms,' noting that 'when these programs are cancelled, there can be no do over and no redress.'
The judge rejected a request by the NEH that the injunction be stayed. He said the government had not met the standards for such a stay.
Simon said the defendants were 'likely violating statutory obligations and principles of separation of powers that have existed for decades.'
The order also stopped the government from 'disbursing, encumbering, loaning, granting, or otherwise disposing of the funds committed to Plaintiffs.'

BJP to relaunch 'Gothan' as 'Gaudham' in Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh's BJP government is set to relaunch the 'Gothan' scheme. It will now be known as 'Gaudham'. The finance department has approved the scheme. The government aims to address stray cattle issues. It will provide support to cattle grazers. Gaudham centers will be established in rural areas. Remove Ads The BJP government in Chhattisgarh is set to relaunch the erstwhile Congress government's flagship 'Gothan' scheme under a new name - 'Gaudham'. The state finance department has approved a draft of the scheme and sent it to district collectors across the state, said erstwhile Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government had launched the scheme under which it started buying cow dung from farmers through more than 10,000 Gothan centres. However, after BJP came to power, the purchase of cow dung was stopped. With increasing accidents involving stray cattle on the roads and highways, state government has now prepared a revamped plan under the scheme. Just last week, more than 90 cows died in three separate Gaudham centres under the renamed scheme will be used to keep the stray cattle from roaming on the streets. The government will not buy cow dung and instead provide monetary support to cattle grazers. It will provide a monthly honorarium to cattle grazers and a daily fodder budget for the cattle at the centres. The cattle grazers will receive ₹10,916 each per month while for every animal the initial budget has been kept as ₹10 per day. In the first phase, Gaudham centres will be set up in rural areas alongside the National Highway (NH)-6 .

Congress's Thorat backs Pawar, hints at EVM tampering
Pune/Nashik: Supporting NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar 's claim that two individuals approached him guaranteeing 160 seats for the opposition alliance in the state assembly election, senior Congress member Balasaheb Thorat on Saturday said he believed the duo was indicating that EVMs could be hacked. Interacting with mediapersons, Thorat said, "There is enough proof to doubt the transparency and integrity of the ECI. " Thorat also accused ECI of playing mischief over the demands for electronic data of voters' lists, CCTV footage, and others.
