Content: Happy new season one and all – except for our teams today, the last one never really ended, and for the best possible reasons.
Chelsea finished its domestic aspect in form that was just good enough, qualifying for the Champions League and perhaps saving Enzo Maresca's job in the process. After that, though, things really got going.
It's easy to say that Chelsea were fitting winners of the first Club World Cup, bringing together, as it did, geopolitics posing as sport, Saudi money, US imperialism, far-right dictatorship, and ersatz, artificial prestige. But it's unlikely the players are giving this any thought, instead captured by their growing sense of mission: an entity that once looked atomised, incoherent and disconnected has since fused into a definitive whole, the team secure in the knowledge that they can out-think, out-play and out-fight the best team in the world in a big final. They will feel invincible.
But so too will Palace, their players and manager already legends and the two greatest games in their history the last two they've played. It is not just that they beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup, their first trophy, then Liverpool to win the Community Shield, their second, though they did. It is also that they did both in dramatic, affirming, inspirational manner, delivering a buzz to sustain all involved for the rest of their lives. They will feel invincible.
Life being life, though, with triumphs comes pitfalls. By the time Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain in mid-July, their rivals had had a month or so off and already started pre-season, an unhealthy and borderline barbaric state of affairs that will surely exact a toll at some point. The mental and physical stress of elite-level sport is real, not something that can or should be overridden with money, glory and team-spirt. There is a debt to pleasure and in their case it will be fatigue – the only question is when it hits and how they manage it.
Palace, meanwhile, are victims of their own success. Eberechi Eze, their best player, looks likely to leave for Spurs, while Marc Guêhi, their captain, could well be off to Liverpool. With under two weeks left in the transfer window, simply replacing them will be difficult, never mind replacing them with players of equivalent ability, and even if that happens, those players will need nurturing and moulding – or, in other words, rather than build on their achievements to get better, it is more likely they are poised get worse. There is a debt to pleasure and in their case it will be pillaging – the only question is how they mitigate it.
All of which makes this an absolute banger of an opening-weekend fixture. Bring it on!

United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, with Patrick Dorgu hitting a post with a lasered first-half effort. Arsenal keeper David Raya produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay, with his man of the match of the display helping Arteta's side to victory. The atmosphere was as intense as United's start as they flew out the blocks in the summer sun, with Mbeumo getting an early attempt on goal as the hosts bossed play and the early possession. But Arsenal would take the sting out of proceedings with just 13 minutes on the clock. Bayindir flapped at Rice's inswinging corner under pressure from Saliba, with the Turkey international meekly palming on for Calafiori to head over the line. United's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears as Arsenal scored their 31st Premier League goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 campaign – 11 more than any other team. That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached. Arsenal were solid but unspectacular when the second half got under way, with Arteta replacing ineffective debutant Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark. The Sweden international had shone under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and had previously been linked with a move to United, whose fans cheered his substitution. United's new frontman Benjamin Sesko was introduced to a huge roar shortly after, offering a tantalising first look at their rebuilt front three. Cunha continued confidently and Mbeumo was a handful, with an acrobatic attempt soon followed by a header that forced a full stretch save from Raya. Sesko nodded across the face of goal as the home side continued to knock on the door, but Arsenal dug deep and Rice saw a whipped free-kick deflect narrowly wide at the other end. United pushed until the end and Cunha saw a penalty claim ignored, but there was no leveller as Arteta's side started the season with a win as '1-0 to the Arsenal' echoed around the ground.

'Invisible' - Liverpool legend criticises Chelsea duo after Crystal Palace draw
Steve Nicol criticised two 'invisible' Chelsea players after the Club World Cup winners were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace. Chelsea's involvement in the Club World Cup pushed their pre-season schedule back and the Blues looked perhaps understandably off the pace against FA Cup holders Palace. Their best chances in the Premier League opener at Stamford Bridge fell to substitute debutants Estevao Willian, Liam Delap and Andrey Santos, who all came close after the break. Crystal Palace did have the ball in the back of the net but Eberechi Eze's powerful free-kick was disallowed following a VAR check. I feel for them a bit. 'But they didn't create much, Cole Palmer was invisible, as was most of the Chelsea players. Enzo Maresca insisted his Chelsea team could have played better at Stamford Bridge but was reluctant to be too critical of his side. 'Tough game, we expected a tough game,' he told BBC's Match of the Day. 'Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances but they are a very good team. 'We could have counter attacked better, we could have defended better but it is only the first game of the season. 'They [Palace] played about eight games, we played just two so we tried our best. We didn't lose a clean sheet.' Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards, meanwhile, was proud of the Eagles' performance in west London and said it was a 'good way to start the season'. 'We've seen Chelsea throughout the last season and in pre-season, also at the Club World Cup, they have a very dangerous attack. 'So we knew that if we could alleviate them scoring goals, we would have a good chance. You know a draw is still a good point regardless. 'It's a good way to start the season and I think we can move forward with this performance in the second half. 'One thing we talked about before the game was embracing the toughness that Chelsea are going to bring. Newcastle hail signing of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa as ‘fantastic addition'
The 24-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the Magpies, who are understood to have paid an initial £39million for his services, with a further £4m due in add-ons. The Villa academy graduate, who made 167 appearances for the club, 10 of them in last season's Champions League, is head coach Eddie Howe's fourth acquisition of a difficult summer. The Magpies launched their Premier League campaign with a 0-0 draw at Villa on Saturday and Ramsey will join the squad on the training pitch as they begin preparations for champions Liverpool's visit to Tyneside a week on Monday. Howe said: 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt. 'Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he'll be a major asset for us.' Ramsey was part of England's European Under-21 Championship-winning squad in 2023 alongside new team-mate Anthony Gordon. He joins Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw in heading for St James' this summer, although much of the focus has been on the future of wantaway striker Alexander Isak, who was not involved at Villa Park.
