Hazy conditions return to Ottawa

A special air quality statement is in effect for the city, saying smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. Environment Canada's air quality health index (AQHI) for Ottawa was 6, or a moderate risk, as of 4 p.m. 'You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance,' the air quality statement says. Environment Canada lifted the heat warning for Ottawa after five days with temperatures above 30 C in a six-day period. The temperature reached 27 C Wednesday afternoon with a humidex of 34. The forecast for this evening is partly cloudy and hazy. Low 16 C. Thursday will see a mix of sun and cloud, along with hazy conditions in the morning. High 25 C. Friday will be sunny. High 24 C. The outlook for Saturday calls for sunshine. High 28 C. Sunday will be mainly sunny. High 30 C. The normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of 26 C and a low of 16 C. Wildfire smoke The AQHI is forecast to rise to 7 – High Risk tonight, before dropping to 2 - Low Risk by Thursday night. According to smoke will drift over Ottawa through the day and into tonight.

Smoke from Prairie fires prompts special weather statement in Ottawa
Social Sharing Ottawa and area are experiencing poor air quality due to smoke from forest fires burning in the Prairies, Environment Canada says. The special weather statement, issued at 4:48 p.m. Wednesday, also covers areas of the province located south of the capital city as well as a large swath of western Ontario. For the latest conditions and the map of affected areas, click here. The air quality is expected to improve Thursday morning into Thursday afternoon, according to the weather agency. The smoke may pose health risks, Environment Canada said, advising people in affected areas to limit time outdoors and to consider rescheduling outdoor activities.

Thompson renewing state of emergency as wildfires continue to burn

A post on the city's website says council plans to vote on a resolution to extend the state of emergency, which has been in effect since July 7. The city's most recent update following infrared scanning shows three fires near the community, with multiple hot spots of concern being identified near one fire, identified as NO061, by Manitoba. As of Tuesday, the fire is 14 kilometres from Thompson, 18,365 hectares in size, and out of control. 'With clear skies, relative humidity will drop through the rest of the week and increased fire behaviour is expected,' the city said in its post, noting the temperature is expected to hit 30 C by Friday. The city said crews from Quebec have been helping address hot spots, and another crew will be joining the wildfire fight on Wednesday.
