
New auto fare rates in Bengaluru from tomorrow, govt sets October 31 deadline to update meters
According to the new rates, the minimum fare for the first two kilometres has been increased from Rs 30 to Rs 36. For every subsequent kilometre, passengers will now have to pay Rs 18, up from the earlier Rs 15. The night fare – applicable between 10 pm and 5 am – will be charged at 1.5 times the regular rate.
Waiting charges, too, have been revised, with the first five minutes remaining free. Beyond that, a fee of Rs 10 will be charged for every 15 minutes of waiting. In terms of baggage, up to 20 kg is allowed free of cost. An additional Rs 10 will be charged for every 20 kg or part thereof, with the maximum baggage limit capped at 50 kg.
Additionally, Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner, Bengaluru (Traffic), also issued a directive on Wednesday, directing all traffic police officials to book cases against errant auto drivers who charge exorbitant fares in violation of the government-fixed rates.
The RTA order would also mean that aggregator apps like Rapido, Namma Yatri, Uber, and Ola are also set to embrace the new fare structure. As per the Karnataka High Court's October 2022 order, app-based auto aggregators are allowed to charge only 10 per cent above the government-notified fare, plus 5 per cent goods and services tax.
The RTA has instructed that auto rickshaw meters must be recalibrated to reflect the revised fares and certified by the Legal Metrology Department within the given timeline. To streamline the process, all Legal Metrology inspectors working within the city –excluding those from the Investigation Wing – have been directed to focus solely on verifying and stamping auto rickshaws in Bengaluru city limits, irrespective of their usual jurisdiction. 'This special arrangement will remain in effect until the October-end deadline. Post October 31, the Legal Metrology Department will revert to its regular jurisdiction-based operations, as per existing norms,' the notification said.
This is the first fare revision since November 2021, when the base fare was increased from Rs 25 to Rs 30 and the per-kilometre charge from Rs 13 to Rs 15. Before that, fares were last changed in 2013. The latest revision follows repeated appeals from auto unions, which have cited rising fuel prices, higher maintenance costs, and inflation as reasons why the earlier fares were no longer sustainable. However, many drivers have expressed disappointment with the RTA's decision, saying their demand for a Rs 40 base fare and Rs 20 per kilometre was not met.
Michelle Khiangte, a regular auto user, told The Indian Express, 'With the current pricing mechanisms coupled with tipping, the auto fares are… very high and unjustified. Now with the new revision, it will pinch my pocket even more. For a Rs 100 journey, I am paying Rs 150. With the new rates I would be shelling out around Rs 170-Rs 180. The bulk of my expenditure is channelled towards commuting, and this has eventually made transport in Bengaluru very costly.'
Satya Arikutharam, mobility expert and a regular auto user, said, 'The fare revision for autos was long overdue. That said, hardly any autos were operating the fare meter. Commuters must be vigilant about fares from tomorrow, if not aggregators are likely to increase them even further. The best way to ensure this is for commuters to insist that the drivers operate the fare meter for their trips. The Transport Department must put more monitoring efforts than now to ensure autos operate the fare meter, which is a permit condition, on all their trips. Aggregators must also follow the fare notification as the High Court has upheld the state's right to notify and enforce fares.'

5 Arrested in Tamil Nadu For Selling Newborn Boy For Rs 1.5 Lakh
In a disturbing case of child trafficking, five people, including the father of a newborn, have been arrested in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur district for allegedly selling the infant for Rs 1.5 lakh. The male baby has been rescued and is currently under the care of a government-run children's home. The case came to light after a widow, Santoshkumari, alerted police that Dinesh, a local man with whom she had been in a relationship, along with his mother and others, forcibly took away her newborn baby on July 25 while she was returning home from the Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital, where she had delivered the baby on July 13. Dinesh, who is married and has a child of his own, allegedly conspired with his mother Vasugi and a broker named Vinoth to sell the baby to a childless couple, Radhakrishnan, a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) employee, and his wife Vimala, from Adichapuram village in Mannargudi taluk. Following the complaint, police registered a case and arrested all five accused: Dinesh, his mother Vasugi, broker Vinoth, and the couple who bought the baby. The infant was successfully traced and rescued by authorities. "We do not want to endanger the newborn by returning him to the mother immediately," a senior police officer told NDTV. "He will be handed over only after proper counselling and evaluation." Tamil Nadu has had a Cradle Baby Scheme since the 1990s, an initiative that allows parents to safely and anonymously surrender unwanted newborns at designated government hospitals and child welfare centers. The scheme was introduced to combat female infanticide and ensure the safety of abandoned children.

ED Issues Look Out Notice Against Anil Ambani: Report
A SEBI report allegedly found that R‑Infra, a Reliance Group company, had moved around Rs. 10,000 crore to other group companies through an undisclosed private entity without declaring it as a related party. New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout circular against businessman Anil Ambani, managing director of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The agency is investigating allegations of loan fraud worth thousands of crores by his companies, sources told HT on August 1. The issuance of a lookout circular, or LOC, means that Ambani can no longer leave India without the permission of courts. As per the HT report, Ambani has also been summoned for questioning under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on August 5. 'We have issued a LOC against Anil Ambani and issued summons to him on August 5 asking him to appear in Delhi for recording his statement under the PMLA in the loan fraud probe,' HT quoted an officer in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as saying. The unnamed source also said that Ambani would likely be asked about various loans based on findings by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), a statutory body under the government of India that regulates securities and the commodity market in the country. The HT report said that the ED searched the premises of 50 companies and 25 people, including senior executives, associated with the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group companies, last week. According to officials, the ED is looking into alleged financial irregularities and collective loan diversion amounting to more than Rs. 17,000 crore by multiple companies under the Group including Reliance Infrastructure (R Infra). According to The New Indian Express, a report by SEBI allegedly disclosed via ED sources accused R‑Infra of moving approximately Rs. 10,000 crore to group companies through an undisclosed private entity named CLE Pvt Ltd – without declaring it as a related party, possibly to avoid approvals from shareholders and audit panels – under the guise of inter‑corporate deposits, equity investments and corporate guarantees. According to the report, these transactions allegedly span across the financial years of 2013 to 2023, with total exposure to CLE reported at Rs. 8,302 crore by SEBI, and write‑offs reaching Rs 10,110 crore during the financial years (FY) 2017–21. Reliance ADA Group rejects allegations The Reliance ADA Group has, however, rejected these allegations, according to the TNIE report. A spokesperson of the Reliance Group said in a statement that the allegation regarding the diversion of ₹10,000 crore to an undisclosed party was a 10-year-old matter and that the company had stated in its financial statements that its exposure was only around Rs. 6,500 crore, the HT report said. As per the statement, R Infra had already publicly disclosed this matter on February 9 this year. 'Through mandatory mediation proceedings conducted by a retired Supreme Court judge and the mediation award filed before the Hon'ble Bombay High Court, Reliance Infrastructure arrived at a settlement to recover its 100 per cent exposure of ₹6,500 crore,' HT quoted the statement as saying. Per the report, the company also claimed that Anil Ambani had not been on the Board of Reliance Infrastructure for more than three years, since March 2022. The ED is also looking into allegations of illegal loan diversion of approximately Rs. 3,000 crore provided by Yes Bank to companies under the Reliance Group, Reliance Home Finance Limited and Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd, between 2017 and 2019. According to the HT report, ED officials had stated last week that Yes Bank promoters received money in their accounts just before the loan was granted to these companies. Special Judge A K Lahoti, in the over 1,000-page judgment, noted that the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in its investigation claimed that the accused persons were all members of Abhinav Bharat, which was an organised crime syndicate. Mumbai, Aug 2 (PTI) A special court that acquitted seven persons in the 2008 Malegaon blast case debunked the prosecution's claims that right-wing extremist group Abhinav Bharat had carried out the blast, noting that the government has not banned the organisation as a terror outfit. The court noted that the term Abhinav Bharat was consistently used by the prosecuting agencies, from the stage of remand through the final hearing, as a common reference or in common parlance. 'It is necessary to mention that Abhinav Bharat is not a banned organisation. Till today, it is not a banned organisation under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act,' the judgment said. If the Central government is of the opinion that any association is or has become an unlawful association, it may be declared so by way of notification, it added. 'But nothing is brought on record till date to show that Abhinav Bharat Trust or Abhinav Bharat or Abhinav Bharat organisation is banned or declared unlawful by the Central government by way of any notification,' the court observed. It further noted that when the Abhinav Bharat Trust was constituted in 2007, it was registered with the Pune Charity Office, and on perusal, the trust deed did not mention anything wrong or illegal in its objectives. As per the trust deed, the objectives of the Abhinav Bharat Trust were to create patriotism and religious activities. 'The objectives mentioned in it (trust deed) are legal. Moreover, there is no evidence to show that the accused, Pragya Singh Thakur, Sameer Kulkarni and Sudhakar Chaturvedi were members of the Abhinav Bharat Trust,' the court said. The prosecution had claimed that Purohit had floated Abhinav Bharat in 2007 with the intention to propagate a separate Hindu Rashtra, with its own constitution, as the members of the outfit were dissatisfied with the Indian Constitution. It also alleged that the accused persons, who were all members of the group, had entered into a criminal conspiracy between January and September 2008 to carry out a blast in Malegaon to strike terror in the minds of people, cause communal rift and to overawe the government. The objective of the accused persons was to turn India into a Hindu Rashtra called 'Aryawrat', the prosecution had claimed. The court, in its judgment, however, noted that the prosecution had failed to prove that the Abhinav Bharat Trust was constituted for Hindu Rashtra and to change the Constitution of India. The prosecution also could not prove that funds amounting to Rs 21 lakh collected by Abhinav Bharat were used by the accused to purchase arms, ammunition and for other activities to carry out terrorist acts or illegal activities.
