Anwar urges pondok teachers to embrace AI, digital skills to meet new era's challenges

Malay Mail2 days ago
MACHANG, Aug 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged pondok school teachers in the country to master information technology and AI to meet the challenges of the digital era.
He said failure to grasp the latest technologies could cause the traditional religious institution to be overwhelmed by 'a new wave of attacks' of the mind that have replaced past forms of colonisation.
'If we do not master it, others will, and our children will adopt AI based on the frameworks of the United States or France. So, how do we change the approach to this AI framework? It is by ensuring our children have resilience, an understanding of Islam, intelligence and wisdom in knowing what they want to achieve,' he said.
He made this statement while delivering a speech at the opening of the Madani Ijtimak (Assembly) of Kelantan Islamic Scholars and Pondok Teachers 2025 at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang campus, here today.
Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.
Anwar also said it was time to rebuild the pondok institution as a stronghold of Islamic history to counter secular influences.
'Last month, I called in officials from the Finance Ministry to find a way to rebuild pondok (schools) as strongholds. Only then will Madani be realised in its true sense,' he added.
Earlier, Anwar presented a contribution totalling RM1.03 million to representatives of pondok schools attending the National Umara'-Ulama Pondok Dialogue (UMRAN) 2025.
Previously, Anwar was quoted as saying that the government would restore and elevate the country's pondok institution so that it can remain a bulwark for safeguarding the faith, morals, and character of the Muslim ummah in line with current needs.
He stated that this initiative involves collaboration between the Finance Ministry and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to ensure that religious and pondok schools can be upgraded with new facilities and technology. — Bernama

In a landmark deal, Nvidia and AMD set to pay US 15pc of AI chip revenue from Chinese sales

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 — US semiconductor giants Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices have agreed to pay the United States government 15 per cent of their revenue from selling artificial intelligence chips to China, according to media reports Sunday. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday and agreed to give the federal government the cut from its revenues, a highly unusual arrangement in the international tech trade, according to reports in the Financial Times, Bloomberg and New York Times. AFP was not able to immediately verify the reports. Investors are betting that AI will transform the global economy, and last month Nvidia — the world's leading semiconductor producer — became the first company ever to hit US$4 trillion (RM16.95 trillion) in market value. The California-based firm has, however, become entangled in trade tensions between China and the United States, which are waging a heated battle for dominance to produce the chips that power AI. The US has been restricting which chips Nvidia can export to China on national security grounds. Nvidia said last month that Washington had pledged to let the company sell its 'H20' chips to China, which are a less powerful version the tech giant specifically developed for the Chinese market. The Trump administration had not issued licenses to allow Nvidia to sell the chips before the reported White House meeting. On Friday, however, the Commerce Department started granting the licenses for chip sales, the reports said. Silicon Valley-based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will also pay 15 per cent of revenue on Chinese sales of its MI308 chips, which it was previously barred from exporting to the country. The deal could earn the US government more than US$2 billion, according to the New York Times report. The move comes as the Trump administration has been imposing stiff tariffs, with goals varying from addressing US trade imbalances, wanting to reshore manufacturing and pressuring foreign governments to change policies. A 100 per cent tariff on many semiconductor imports came into effect last week, with exceptions for tech companies that announce major investments in the United States. — AFP

STR phase 3 payments for 8.6 million recipients start tomorrow

PUTRAJAYA: The government will begin disbursing Phase Three of the Rahmah Cash Assistance (STR) payments tomorrow, allocating RM2 billion to ease the cost of living for low-income households. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister, stated that 8.6 million recipients will receive up to RM650 in aid under STR Phase Three. This marks an increase of 300,000 recipients compared to the 8.3 million beneficiaries in Phase One last January. Anwar attributed the rise in STR recipients to the MADANI government's initiative to accept new applications and appeals year-round. 'The continuous application and appeal process reflects the MADANI government's commitment to ensuring no eligible individual is left out,' he said. 'Beyond cash aid, STR empowers recipients to achieve financial independence, aligning with the MADANI Economy's goal of equitable prosperity.' Payments will be credited directly to bank accounts or distributed via Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) for eligible recipients. The Finance Ministry advised those not listed in the STR database to submit applications for verification. Eligibility status and frequently asked questions (FAQ) can be checked on the official STR portal at - Bernama

Next payout of STR aid starts tomorrow, now helping 8.6 million Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The third phase of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) will reach 8.6 million Malaysians starting tomorrow, the Finance Ministry said today. It added that the number of recipients is now 300,000 higher than the first phase in January. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, attributed the increase to opening up applications indefinitely. 'The year-round application and appeal process reflects the Madani government's commitment to the trust it holds in improving the welfare of the people, ensuring that no one is left behind from sharing in the nation's prosperity,' he said in a statement. 'More than just cash assistance, STR provides a boost for recipients to achieve financial independence, so that we may realise the equity envisioned in the Madani Economy.' Payments for this phase will total RM2 billion, with up to RM650 per household. Distribution will be through bank transfers or cash payments at Bank Simpanan Nasional. Categories of recipients include low-income households, senior citizens without partners, and single individuals. The ministry also reminded the public to use the official STR portal to avoid scams.
