Love in times of uncertainty
Materialists is understandably getting mixed, polarising reactions from the audience — so real and savage it slaps the romance out of our senses before offering a warm shoulder.
My editor was irritated by the script, which she declared too sappy and stereotypical for this age of cynicism where bank balances trump moody romance. But, isn't the fantasy the reason we go to the movies?
Yes — except this very story has been done before, and better. By a 22-year-old screenwriter named Helen Childress, whose script Reality Bites convinced her friend Winona Ryder to hire her friends — two guys named Ben Stiller and Ethan Hawke — to direct and act in the movie.
Thirty years later, it still holds up — and how! As a sharper articulation of the ideas behind Materialists, with tighter writing filled with genuine ache and longing in 'the winter of our discontent', Ethan Hawke channelling Jesse even before he became the Jesse from Linklater's Before trilogy.
Materialists does have its merits. The cast is easy on the eyes: Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal. Occasionally, there's a good line: 'When you are lost, just go where love is.'
Cute. But try topping this one from Reality Bites: 'All I want is a couch, a couple smokes, a cup of coffee, and a little bit of conversation. You and me and five bucks.'
So here's the math: Reality Bites: 100 > Materialists: 1
Ghost stories
Santhanam's follow-up to DD Returns, Devil's Double: Next Level (streaming on Zee5), has such a fun premise. YouTube film critics are targeted by the ghost of a dead producer in a movie hall that traps them in a film. Though full of potential jokes, the movie settles for the bare minimum.
Yet, it cracks you up every now and then, saving the punchline for the end.
How do you get out of a bad franchise? Don't kill the villain. Kill the hero. Kill the star. Five stars for the messaging, three for the movie.
In Subham, the laughs come from men trying to shoot an alternate version of the never-ending soap — one with an ending that can finally provide closure to the dead grannies who've possessed their brides to catch up on their favourite show.
While figuring out what ending would make them happy, the men also become better humans. The film is less of a horror flick and more of a smart ode to the power of movies — like Be Kind, Rewind, where the guys running the video store shoot their own versions of their favourite films.
Subham is now streaming on Disney.

‘Lucia' director Pawan Kumar is lead actor for web series ‘Shodha'
Bengaluru: Filmmaker and producer Pawan Kumar, best known for his cult Kannada film 'Lucia', will be seen in a full-fledged lead role in ZEE5's upcoming original web series 'Shodha'. 'I was drawn to the script mostly. It has a good plot and a lot of room for performance. I thought, why not,' Kumar told PTI. Kumar made his directorial debut with 'Lifeu Ishtene' (2011), a dark comedy that won both critical and popular acclaim. He followed it up with the psychological thriller 'Lucia' (2013), which marked a turning point in Kannada independent cinema. His 2016 film 'U-Turn' was also a critical and commercial success. After the success of 'U-Turn' in Kannada, the film was remade in Tamil and Telugu in 2018 with Samantha Ruth Prabhu playing the lead. Pawan Kumar directed both versions. It was later remade in Hindi with Alaya F, with the rights sold to Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms. In 2023, he directed the Malayalam film 'Dhoomam', starring Fahadh Faasil, which, however, failed to make a lasting impact. Kumar said he has been acting 'here and there' over the years, though he still prefers directing. He was last seen in a cameo in the 2023 Kannada comedy 'Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare'. 'I also acted in a Telugu web series I directed in 2021, 'Kudi Yedamaithe'. But in 'Shodha', I am playing the lead,' he said. 'Kudi Yedamaithe', a science fiction thriller conceived during the Covid-induced lockdown, starred Amala Paul and Rahul Vijay. Kumar expressed appreciation for platforms like ZEE5 supporting original Kannada content. ZEE5 recently premiered its first Kannada web series, 'Ayyane Mane', in April. 'It's not easy to convince major streaming platforms to back Kannada content. So, it becomes our responsibility as Kannada creators to keep the momentum going. That's partly why I agreed to act when director Sunil Mysuru approached me,' he said. Sunil, who directs 'Shodha', previously worked as an assistant on 'Lucia', Kumar added. 'Even the cast—they're all people I really vibe with. So we had fun putting this series together. Hopefully, it will be well received by the audience, too,' said Kumar. The seven-episode web series 'Shodha' will premiere on ZEE5 on August 22.

Mothevari Love Story's Anil Geela credits Vijay Deverakonda for ‘push' towards cinema: ‘Played huge role in my career'
Almost a decade ago, when the people of Lambadipally, Telangana, decided to share bits of their lives on the YouTube channel My Village Show, little did they know their world was about to change. Staggering views, love from celebrities and fans alike, and a lot of exposure later, Anil Geela is playing the lead actor in the Zee5 web series Mothevari Love Story. Incidentally, it's directed by Burra Shiva Krishna, who is also an alum of the channel. In a candid interview with Hindustan Times, Anil talks about playing the lead, his love for acting, how the Deverakonda brothers supported his career and more. Anil Geela acted with Vijay Deverakonda in the 2020 film World Famous Lover. My Village Show alum goes places Anil says the spark for acting began even before he could've dreamt of seeing himself on the big screen. 'Whenever I would act on YouTube, it would spark a deep interest in me. Soon, people approached me for cameos in star-driven films. And when I saw myself on the big screen, I knew I could move beyond playing small roles and maybe even play the lead some day,' says Anil. Some of his co-stars from the YouTube channel – Gangavva, Raju, Chandru, Anji Maama and others – have also forayed into films, bringing visibility to the whole team. 'Our work brought us recognition, and it's all the more special because people from our region rarely get a chance to act in films. All this was only possible because we believed in creating quality entertainment which brought us closer to the audience,' he says. The making of Mothevari Love Story Mothevari Love Story sticks to Anil's roots by telling the story of two youngsters from rural Telangana who decide to elope, only to find themselves in odd circumstances. 'This web series was created with today's audience in mind – people who are caught up in stressful jobs and busy lives. We wanted to bring them some fun, laughter, and a break from daily stress. The series uses pure Telangana slang and reflects real village life,' explains the actor. It helped that the series' story is based on real-life drama that Anil says happens in many rural households. He also says that all the actors who acted in it are from Telangana and fluent in the dialect, making it all the more authentic. 'We're proud to represent our region with honesty,' he says, adding, 'Right now, films and series rooted in Telangana culture are getting a lot of appreciation, and we feel lucky to be a part of that. We've been creating Telangana-based rural content for a decade, so this comes very naturally to us.' Anil also cannot believe that the channel evolved from something simple to producing content like Mothevari Love Story today. 'Many of our team members acted in it, our writer is now the director, our production manager is the producer. What more could I ask for?' he says. The Deverakonda brothers' support Anil and the rest of the My Village Show crew might all be self-made, but the actor says acting in Vijay Deverakonda's 2020 film World Famous Lover boosted his confidence. It also made him decide that he is looking to play strong characters that support the story, be it as a lead or otherwise. 'My focus is not just on being the lead, but on acting in roles that suit me and allow me to grow. I want to continue acting and take on meaningful projects,' he says. His YouTube channel has hosted numerous stars promoting their films over the years, and Anil believes that 'goodwill' is now helping him. 'I want to give a big thanks to Anand Deverakonda, Tarun Bhascker, Priyadarshi, and many others who supported us by sharing posts and stories of the series on social media,' he says, adding, 'But the biggest push came from Vijay Deverakonda anna. He gave me my first big opportunity in cinema. It played a huge role in my career. Later, when we approached Anand Deverakonda to release our series' poster, he agreed to do so. Their support has made a major impact on my journey, and I'm truly thankful to both of them.'

Sheeba Chaddha's upcoming work Sheeba Chaddha will soon be seen as Manthara in Nitesh Tiwari's much-awaited epic Ramayana, which will be released in two parts—Part 1 on Diwali 2026 and Part 2 in 2027. The epic will star Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as goddess Sita. Meanwhile, she stars in the comedy-drama web series Bakaiti, which premiered on ZEE5 on 1 August. Directed by Ameet Guptha, the show is a slice-of-life portrayal of a middle-class family in Ghaziabad, with Sheeba playing a key role in the heartwarming, humorous narrative.
