Former mayor dies trying to save town from wildfires sweeping southern Europe

Officials said Carlos Damaso, the former mayor of Vila Franca do Deão in northeast Portugal, was reported missing while helping fight a blaze. His body was found on Friday. Nearly 4,000 firefighters are now deployed across the country, and the government in Lisbon has joined Spain in requesting assistance from the European Union's civil protection mechanism. However, authorities in Portugal have warned they lack enough resources, while strong winds were causing blazes to spread across the country faster than firefighters could contain them. Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, offered 'heartfelt condolences' to former mayor Damaso, and cut short a holiday to join emergency meetings this weekend. Wildfires have burned across much of Europe in the last week. In Spain, blazes have burned 610 square miles so far this year – an area roughly the size of London. There were 14 major fires burning in the country this weekend, with firefighters deployed on a public holiday on Friday as persistent heat and dry conditions made the spread ever more likely. Spain's national weather agency Aemet said temperatures had risen above 44C in several places on Saturday, warning of a very high risk of fires across 'practically the entire country'. France, Bulgaria, Albania and Montenegro have also suffered devastating fires so far amid heatwaves in August. More Trending While wildfires happen frequently across Europe over the summer, meteorologists say extreme weather which makes them more likely is becoming more frequent as a result of climate change. Noticed a fuzzy looking moon recently?Smoke from wildfires in Iberia and Canada have given widely hazy skies across Europe and may result in some vivid sunsets and sunrises. — Met Office (@metoffice) August 15, 2025 According to EU data, about 6,290 square km (2,429 square miles) of land has burnt across the bloc since the beginning of the year. And the Met Office said that even the UK is currently being affected as smoke carried over from the fires in Europe creates hazy conditions in parts of the country. The weather agency said the conditions will lead to brighter sunsets, combining with Saharan dust that has blown towards the country this weekend. Rain and storms forecast for much of Australia's east coast for every day next week

For Australia's east coast, the wet weeks are dragging on with no immediate reprieve in sight. 'I know people in Sydney and other parts of New South Wales will be sick of hearing this,' the Bureau of Meteorology's Angus Hines told the ABC on Saturday. 'But it will be another wet week across the eastern coastline, all the way from the Illawarra through New South Wales, through Sydney, Newcastle, through Brisbane up to the Wide Bay in Queensland'. The senior BoM meteorologist said 'a couple of wet days' were forecast across eastern regions. 'Tuesday through Thursday is when we're eyeing up some persistent showers and and possible storms.' Hines said that there would be 'slightly cool, slightly showery, maybe hail-like weather' over the weekend along the east coast. Sign up: AU Breaking News email On the other side of the country, he said there was yet another cold front, with strong winds and rain expected to arrive in Perth around about Tuesday. Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said there was potential for hazardous and severe weather along the east coast next week, though there was some 'forecast uncertainty' surrounding the weather system. 'The pool of cold air associated with next week's wet weather will cause rain, hail and snow to spread over parts of south-eastern Australia on Friday and over the weekend. This wintry mix of precipitation will then become more focused on NSW and Queensland from Monday onwards,' he said. 'It's important to point out that there is currently quite a lot of disagreement between computer models regarding where and how much rain will fall next week. However, there is general consensus between major models that rain will occur over parts of eastern Australia every day next week. 'Some models also suggest that heavy rain will occur on several days next week, possibly enough to cause flooding.'

Terrified homeowners jump into the sea to escape approaching wildfires by boat

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Greek Red Cross volunteers rescued families trapped in the sea after they waded into deep water to escape wildfires this week. The blaze broke out at noon in Vrachnaiika, western Greece, on Tuesday and raged on until late on Wednesday. Footage shows the rescuers approaching the shore in a lifeboat in the dark while flames rage in the background. They are seen hauling terrified families and their pets into the boat amid thick smoke and glowing embers falling around them. The fires were so fierce that the sky was almost completely blackened by ash, with no visible moonlight or starlight. Fire crews around the country have been battling a wave of severe wildfires triggered by hot and dry conditions across southern Europe. A major blaze just outside the southern port city of Patras nearly began buurning through residential areas before firefighters stopped it just in time. Local authorities believe it may have been caused by arsonists and have arrested three people. Tourists have also fled parts of the Greek isles of Zakynthos and kefalonia due to fires. Meanwhile a third person died in wildfires in central Spain, where officials have declared a 'serious' threat to life. The 37-year-old volunteer firefighter suffered fatal burns north of Madrid. Bulgaria, Montenegro and Albania have also been battling wildfires, joining Spain and Greece in requesting firefighting planes and helicopter assistance from the EU's emergency response agency. The agency's assistance scheme has been activated more times this year so far than in the entirety of 2024.
