Union Cabinet approves 4 semiconductor projects Rs 4,600 crore to boost domestic chip making

The approvals take the total India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) portfolio to 10 projects across six states with cumulative investments of Rs 1.6 lakh crore. The government said the move is in line with its vision of building a robust and self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem to support sectors ranging from defence to consumer electronics. 'Four new semiconductor projects have been approved. You know that six projects are already approved and four new ones have been added to it today. These are in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, at an investment of Rs 4,594 Crore,' Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference in New Delhi today. New Delhi: In a significant push to India's chip-making ambitions, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved four new semiconductor manufacturing projects with a total investment of Rs 4,600 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The projects will boost domestic production of chips, packaging and advanced materials, generating over 2,000 skilled jobs directly. Out of the four projects that have been approved, two are in Odisha, one in Punjab, and one in Andhra Pradesh. Two of the approved projects will come up in Odisha's Info Valley, Bhubaneswar, making the state an emerging hub for the sector. SiCSem Private Limited will set up the country's first commercial compound semiconductor fabrication facility, capable of producing 60,000 wafers annually and packaging 96 million units. The plant's products will cater to applications in electric vehicles, railways, fast chargers, data centres, solar inverters, consumer appliances and missile systems. The second Odisha project, by 3D Glass Solutions Inc. (3DGS), will establish an advanced packaging and embedded glass substrate facility. It will introduce the world's most advanced semiconductor packaging technology to India, with an annual capacity of 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units and 13,200 3D Heterogeneous Integration (3DHI) modules. The technology will be used in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, defence electronics, radio frequency and photonics applications. In Andhra Pradesh, Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies, in collaboration with South Korea's APACT Co. Ltd., will set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit with a capacity of 96 million units a year. The plant will serve markets for mobile devices, set-top boxes, automotive electronics and other applications. The fourth project that was approved by the Union Cabinet is for Continental Device India Ltd. (CDIL) in Mohali, Punjab, it will expand the company's discrete semiconductor manufacturing capacity. The upgraded facility will produce 158.38 million units of high-power devices annually, including MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky diodes and transistors in both silicon and silicon carbide. These components are used in EV electronics, renewable energy systems, power conversion, industrial automation and communication infrastructure. The approvals mark a decisive step in positioning India as a global semiconductor hub. 'These projects will accelerate our journey towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in electronics manufacturing and create a talent pool that will serve global industry,' the government said in a statement. The ISM has already attracted major investments and fostered a growing design ecosystem, with 72 startups and 278 academic institutions engaged in semiconductor R&D and training. Over 60,000 students are benefitting from semiconductor talent development programmes across the country. (ANI) This report is auto-generated from ANI news service. Withdrawn land-pool policy leaves huge trust deficit for AAP

Jalandhar: Though the Aam Aadmi Party govt has withdrawn the land pooling policy, it has left a huge trust deficit. The state govt has been facing criticism on other issues, but the move of the land pooling policy caused unprecedented damage so far. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The negativity for the ruling party, especially for its top leadership, generated in rural areas will become a big challenge for the AAP to overcome. What promises of 300 units of free power and Rs 1,000 per month for women delivered positively for the AAP then, the land pooling policy appears to have done in inverse proportion now. In 24 hours after the state govt announced the withdrawal, there was an expression of relief and victory, but at the same time, apprehensions about the state govt were clearly visible, reflecting the extent of the trust deficit. There have been calls by farm leaders and activists to keep a watch on the state govt's moves. The anger, contempt, and distrust could be easily seen from the comments on AAP's Facebook page, especially under the posts pertaining to the announcement of the withdrawal of the policy. There were scores of comments by rural folks and Punjabi netizens that despite this withdrawal, whenever the AAP MLAs or other leaders come to the villages, they must be questioned as to who actually prepared and pushed the policy. As the opposition parties, farm groups, and several Punjabi activists and netizens repeatedly mentioned in the last two months that AAP's central leadership was the architect of the move, 'Dilli-walas' are finding maximum mention, loaded with negative adjectives, in the Punjabi social media space. Ahead of the 2022 assembly election, the farm movement played a very significant role in fuelling the sentiment of 'badlav' (change), and now this appears to have become one of the most ridiculed references, as the rural folks have been using strong epithets in video interviews or social media posts. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Questions about other promises, especially about significantly improving financial health of the state, have now started emerging with greater vigour. Pro-farm groups are also questioning failure of the state govt to release its agriculture policy. The trust deficit visible now, despite the ruling party focusing a lot on pushing its narrative through its strong social media network, is in complete contrast to the expression of great trust, almost blind faith, in AAP ahead of the 2022 assembly election. The only solace for the AAP so far is that opposition parties, especially Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal, are battling with their own issues. Neither of the two has been able to encash upon the anti-govt sentiment in the way AAP capitalised on the negativity for the old parties ahead of the 2022 election.

Naidu urges agencies to complete Amaravati projects six months ahead of deadline

Vijayawada: Without waiting until the deadline, contract agencies should focus on completing works in the capital, Amaravati, as expeditiously as possible without compromising on quality, said chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu . He held a review with officials of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), Amaravati Development Corporation (ADC), and representatives of various agencies executing works in Amaravati on Tuesday. Every agency should execute works with proper planning, adhering to timelines. He said that the works should proceed in autopilot mode without any hindrances. He suggested finishing the work six months ahead of the deadline to complete the city's development. Naidu inquired about the present status of various works like LPS layouts, residences for ministers, MLAs, officials, employees, judges, roads, ducts, trunk infrastructure, and flood control work in the capital. CRDA officials informed the chief minister that tenders were called for works worth Rs 50,552 crore, and 74 projects have been launched so far. Naidu stressed that the progress of construction in the capital should be visible to the public. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo He said he wanted to see visible progress in works in the review to be conducted every month from now. He warned that contract firms and concerned officials would be held accountable for any delay in execution. Addressing concerns raised by some farmers regarding the transfer of returnable plots, Naidu directed officials to ensure farmers do not face any difficulties in getting their plots. The minister for municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) informed the Chief Minister that issues pertaining to returnable plots would be resolved within a week. When representatives of contractors mentioned theft of sand stockpiles and rusting of iron material over the last five years, Naidu instructed mining department officials to replenish the sand. Besides focusing on infrastructure development, the chief minister directed officials to ensure approvals are given to firms establishing offices expeditiously. He said land should be allocated to institutions like XLRI and BITS Pilani immediately so that they can start operations in Amaravati. Officials should track the progress in the establishment of offices by all 72 organisations given land in the capital region. Stressing the need for significant economic activity in the capital, Naidu said investment flow will start once essential infrastructure is in place. As investments, job creation, and development are interrelated, priority should be given to essential infrastructure first.
