Hassan: Forest minister Eshwar B Khandre on Sunday said that Veerashaiva Lingayat mutts have made remarkable contributions to the development of the state and the nation. The minister was addressing the gathering during the valedictory of a two-day workshop for Lingayat community members organised by Akhila Bharat Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Karnataka, and the Hassan district unit at Pushpairi Samsthana Mutt in Halebidu. He said Veerashaiva Lingayat mutts have made major contributions in establishing Nava Karnatak and Nava Bharat. The mutts have been offering education, accommodation, and serving all community people, Khandre said. A majority of the people were behind money and power. The family system changed. Crime rates and the number of age-old homes increased. Even the cases of divorce increased. There is a need for change in the system, he said. "We are planning for 'Anubhava Mantap' to bring change in society at the cost of Rs 750 crore," he said and added that Rs 350 crore is already invested. Even the previous govt made contributions by releasing funds, he said. Somashekara Shivacharya Swami of Pushpagiri Mutt was present. The 12th century's social reformer Basaveshwar fought against inequality to bring equality in society, MLA Channareddy Patil Tunnur said after inaugurating the 892th birth anniversary celebrations of Basaveshwar. He paid a floral tribute to the social reformer in Yadgir on April 30. Mr. Tunnur said that Basaveshwar has struggled against social inequality by gathering saints from different castes through 'Anubhava Mantap'. Because of his initiatives and awareness, many social evils were eradicated, he added. 'Basaveshwar wasn't only a philosopher and social reformer, but also a good administrator who protected the interests of the people under Bijjala's rule. His dedication and honesty as a Minister under King Bijjala was highly appreciable. His thoughts brought many changes to society. He wrote vachanas (expression of thoughts via short passages) to eradicate social evils and superstitions,' the MLA said. CMC Chairperson Lalita Anapur and Deputy Commissioner B. Susheela also addressed the gathering. Subhashchandra Koulagi, principal of government degree college, gaven a special lecture on Basaveshwar. YUDA Chairperson Vinayak Malipatil, Superintendent of Police Pruthvik Shankar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sharanabasappa Koteppagol, Assistant Commissioner of Yadgir sub-division Hampanna Sajjan, and district president of Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha were among those present
