A.P. well-positioned to supply skilled workforce to global market, says German official

Germany is facing a major demographic challenge as an aging society, resulting in an urgent need for skilled workforce. On the other hand, India, with its youthful population and emphasis on education, holds a strategic demographic advantage, said Balasubramanian Ramani, Head of Talent Acquisition for Skilled Workforce in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Government of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany. Speaking to The Hindu during his recent visit to Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) to explore collaboration between Andhra Pradesh and Lower Saxony in skilling and employment, Mr. Ramani said a partnership between the two can be mutually beneficial. Mr. Ramani, who met Secretary (Skill Development and Education department) Kona Sasidhar and Advisor to the A.P. government for International Skilling Seeta Sharma said, with institutions such as ITIs, universities and vocational training centres, A.P. is well-positioned to train and supply skilled workers for global markets. The State's commitment to becoming a hub of renewable energy and quantum technologies further enhances its relevance, he said. He said that though the current focus was on the healthcare, partnership in renewable energy will also be explored actively, given that Lower Saxony leads Germany in renewable energy (offshore and onshore wind and solar). 'The idea is to attract, train and retain skilled professionals,' he said, adding that to take this forward, an invitation will be sent to A.P. government to send its delegation to Lower Saxony for a first-hand experience of its industries, training centres and political engagement. 'A concrete agreement should happen in six months,' he said. Technical sectors, metal industry and higher education and research segments will also be discussed in the days to come, he said. Language training As proficiency in German is crucial for workforce integration in Germany, he said A.P. government has expressed readiness to set up joint language academies, sending 15 trainers to Germany for language training and hosting German language interns from Germany to train local teachers. Referring to A.P.'s vision to become a quantum technology hub, Mr. Ramani said Lower Saxony has strong physics and quantum research universities and suggested cooperation in higher education mobility, research and student exchange. Speaking about broader economic cooperation, he said besides skilling, the collaboration can extend to investment and joint ventures, food processing (Lower Saxony is a major agricultural state) and ports and shipbuilding, suggesting links between Visakhapatnam and German ports.

T.N. only State in India to achieve double-digit economic growth: CM Stalin

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) said Tamil Nadu stands tall as the only State in India to achieve double-digit economic growth rate in real terms during 2024-25 at 11.19%. In a post on X, Mr. Stalin referred to a report published in The Hindu and said: 'Tamil Nadu's Dravidian model government stands tall as the only State in India to achieve double-digit economic growth. We proudly declared that Tamil Nadu led the nation with a growth rate of 9.69%. Now, that too has been surpassed. As per the revised estimates of the Union government, Tamil Nadu has recorded a staggering growth rate of 11.19% — the highest in the country,' he said. 'The last time we touched double-digit growth was in 2010-11, under the leadership of Kalaignar [M. Karunanidhi]. Today, the Dravidian model government, walking the path shown by Thalaivar Kalaignar, has repeated that feat. When we set the target of becoming a one trillion dollar economy by 2030, many raised their eyebrows. 'It's too ambitious,' they said. But with growth like this, what once seemed distant is now well within reach,' he said quoting a couplet from Tirukkural.

‘Modern sports infrastructure projects boost real estate growth in T.N.'

With land prices increasing in neighbourhoods where sports infrastructure projects are taken up by the State government, the real estate sector is looking at lasting and sustainable sports infrastructure as a catalyst to growth, said J. Meghanatha Reddy, Member Secretary and CEO, Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority. During a fireside chat with K.C. Vijaya Kumar, Sports Editor of The Hindu, on 'Building Champions, Building Cities: The Role of Sports Infrastructure in Tamil Nadu's Growth', Mr. Meghanatha Reddy, said: 'A silent sports revolution is happening in the State. A budget of ₹1945 crore has been allocated for sports in the last five years, cumulatively. In the first year, the budget was ₹166 crore.' 'I was in Tenkasi a few days ago. A new sports complex has been announced for the district. The value of land in the area shot up ten times thanks to a stadium that has come up in Tenkasi,' he said. He added that the global sports city proposed to be developed in Semmenchery by the Tamil Nadu government had drawn a lot of attention. 'We are about to start the work in two or three months,' he said. Pointing to the synergy between real estate and sports, he said a total of 100 mini-stadiums would be created in the State by the end of the year, and that the development of sports infrastructure was demand-driven. 'The sports infrastructure facilities are identities of a particular place. In Nagercoil, we have created a centre for martial arts. In a survey of constituencies, one of the major demands was a stadium,' he said. Pointing to the development of the first Olympic Water Sports Academy in Ramanathapuram, Mr. Meghanatha Reddy said the hospitality industry was equally growing in the area. 'Sports infrastructure is changing the landscape,' he said. Mini-stadium A total of 200 civil infrastructure projects are being undertaken in Tamil Nadu for the development of sports infrastructure, including high performance centres. The Kolathur mini-stadium, developed on a dump yard, will be inaugurated next week, he said. Urging sportspersons to apply online for financial support from the Tamil Nadu Champions' Foundation, Mr. Meghanatha Reddy said: 'In the last two-and-a-half years, 4000 sportspersons have been supported. We gave everything they asked for. Talent is found everywhere. We have to tap local talent for global sports events,' he said.
