Mother of Butler County girl who vanished 40 years ago gathers community to push for new information
A high-profile mystery in Butler County remains unsolved years after 8-year-old Cherrie Mahan vanished. Janice McKinney is still haunted by unanswered questions about what happened to her little girl 40 years ago Saturday.

'Nobody understands how much I would love to have my daughter back in my life,' McKinney said.
On February 22, 1985, Cherrie mysteriously disappeared near her home in rural Butler County after getting off the school bus. There's been no trace of the 8-year-old ever since.
After four decades of exhaustive searches, tips and leads turned up empty, Cherrie's mom has never given up hope.
'Never, ever,' McKinney said. 'Not until I have a bag of bones, not until I have that child standing in front of me. And I know that she's not a child but until I know for sure, I'm never giving up.'
Friends, family and even strangers packed the VFW in Saxonburg Saturday to try to breathe new life into a case that's gone cold.
Jean and Suzanne Vincent, known as the Psychic Vincent Sisters, are McKinney's close friends.
'It's good shining light on it and let's bring her home,' Jean Vincent said.
Suzanne Vincent agreed.
'All we want to do is bring closure to her,' she said.
Trooper Jim Long with Pennsylvania State Police said they're still actively investigating every lead they get.
'It's been decades, so the information that we have, a lot of it is the same information we've had before - misidentification of vehicles, things like that, so the more time passes the more difficult it gets.'
Bailey Gizienski and her sisters, who McKinney calls her Cherrie's angels, have launched a Facebook page to bring awareness to the case and the event that included fingerprinting children.
'One thing about fingerprints is they never change,' Gizienski said. 'From the time you're born until the time you die, they never change.'
As for McKinney, the hole in her heart from losing her daughter might never be filled but she still pushes on.
'Somebody out there knows something, and I do believe somebody is going to tell somebody and that is just my hope and my plea,' McKinney said.
State police said there is nothing new in the case. They are asking anyone with information on Cherrie's disappearance to call PSP Butler at 724-284-8100.

Stolen U-Haul Found 2000 Miles from Home Due to a Hand-Painted License Plate, Police Say
Two people have been arrested after authorities say they were spotted driving a U-Haul truck with a fake license plate — but this wasn't your typical fake. According to the Alhambra Police Department (APD) in California, the department's officers noticed the plate was hand-painted to look like a legitimate Arizona plate. Authorities say the U-Haul truck was spotted around Garvey Avenue and Montezuma Avenue, about six miles east of downtown Los Angeles; police saw the fake license plate and stopped the suspects for questioning. During the investigation, the police say they determined that the truck had been reported stolen in Chicago, leading to the arrest of Andrew Menas and Nicole Wetzel; they were both booked into the APD's jail. The APD, apparently, couldn't help but have a little fun with the whole event when they posted about it on their Facebook page: 'Remember, if your masterpiece is on a stolen vehicle, it's definitely not going in an art gallery; it's going straight to evidence.' It's easy to laugh at an attempt to pass off an art project as legitimate vehicle registration, but think about it this way: it's about 2000 miles from Chicago to the place where the APD ultimately stopped the truck. If the fake plate was on the truck the entire way, that means the U-Haul covered two-thirds of the country and crossed at least seven states before any authorities noticed. Under California law, a person that is caught with an altered or forged license plate can be charged with a felony. If convicted, the sentence can include a $10,000 fine and up to 3 years in jail. The irony of it all is that if these suspects are convicted and sent to state prison, they may end up... working in the license plate factory. Disqualified driver caught drunk behind wheel twice
A disqualified driver has received a ban after he was caught drink driving twice in a month. Kennedy Kipchirchir has to wear an alcohol monitoring tag for 120 days and has received a four year driving ban after being sentenced at Cheltenham Magistrates Court on Monday. Kipchirchir was previously banned from driving for almost a year when he was seen by members of the public hitting a cone and narrowly missing another car on 11 May 2024. PC Laurie Merchant from Gloucestershire Police said: "This case is one we are seeing more often unfortunately." A few weeks later he was filmed again by police driving erratically in the same car, and officers witnessed him swapping seats with the passenger. He was breathalysed and again found to be over the limit. Kipchirchir pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving whilst disqualified at Cheltenham Magistrates Court. He has also been ordered to pay £884 in court costs. Panama City Police: Woman, 20, charged with attempted murder after brick/gun ambush
PANAMA CITY — A Panama City woman was arrested on a charge of attempted murder after an ambush encounter that began at the intersection of 14th Street and Mercedes Avenue on June 15, according to an arrest affidavit filed by the Panama City Police Department. The defendant has been identified as 20-year old Krista Brashanti Moneymaker. The victim is a 19-year-old woman. According to the affidavit, which is on file with the Bay County court clerk, Moneymaker convinced the victim to meet her at midnight by contacting her through a fake Facebook account. The affidavit says the women have been engaged in an ongoing dispute. Moneymaker claimed to be unable to find the victim's house. She asked the victim to walk to the nearest intersection and drop a pin showing her location. Moneymaker jumped out of the bushes and threw a brick at the victim's face when she approached the intersection. As the victim was running back to her home, Moneymaker fired her gun at the victim three times, but missed all three times, according to the affidavit. The victim returned home uninjured and called law enforcement. Moneymaker has been arrested on charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public/residential property.
