Malaysia face do-or-die Davis Cup battle against Qatar

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will take on Qatar in a do-or-die battle in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group IV playoff tomorrow — with promotion to Group III on the line.
Malaysia, led by captain Adam Jaya, booked their spot in the playoff as Pool A champions with a 3-0 win over Kyrgyzstan at the National Tennis Centre today.
Koay Hao Sheng battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 5-2 victory over Mirgiiaz Mirdzhaliev, clinching Malaysia's first point after his opponent retired in the deciding set.
Leroy Yong then clinched the tie with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 win against Ilgiz Kamchibekov.
The doubles pairing of Darrshan Suresh Kumar-Daniel Prickett completed the sweep, defeating Kirill Kistanov-Erbol Eldiyar Uulu 6-2, 6-0.
A play-off win against Pool B runners-up Qatar will earn Malaysia promotion to Group III next year.
Adam said he was pleased with the team's performance against Kyrgyzstan, but expects Qatar to give a tough challenge.
"These past three days have been satisfying. As you saw, my first singles players over these three days were three different players. In the group, we won all our matches but nothing is more important than tomorrow's D-Day," said the non-playing team skipper.
"Qatar is a very good team. Like Malaysia, they have experience in Group II and Group III, and are now in Group IV. Their players are consistent and fit."
In the other Pool A match played today, Iraq beat Nepal 3-0. In Pool B, the Philippines cruised to a 3-0 win over Qatar to finish top and will meet Pool A runners-up Kyrgyzstan.

Barca cancel Japan pre-season friendly citing contractual breaches

BARCELONA have cancelled their pre-season friendly match against Vissel Kobe in Japan, citing contractual breaches by the promoter, while their two scheduled friendlies in South Korea are also at risk of suspension, the club said. The LaLiga champions were scheduled to play Japanese side Vissel Kobe on Sunday, and to play South Korea's FC Seoul on July 31 and Daegu FC on August 4. "Barcelona announces that it has been obliged to suspend its participation in the game scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter," Barca said in a statement on Wednesday. "Nevertheless, the club will consider readjusting the leg of the summer tour in South Korea," it said, "if certain conditions are met by the promoter. "If these conditions are met, then the club will travel to South Korea in the coming days. Barcelona regrets this incident and the impact it will have on the many, many Barca fans in Japan." In a statement on Thursday, Vissel Kobe apologised to fans. "We sincerely apologise for any concern this may cause to the many fans and related parties who were looking forward to this match," the J1 League club said. "Our club is working in collaboration with relevant parties to gather necessary information and take appropriate measures." Barcelona did not identify the promoter in its statement, but when the tour was first announced it had named them as the YASUDA Group. Reuters has contacted YASUDA for comment. The promoter for matches in South Korea, D-DRIVE, said on Thursday they wanted to make the remainder of the tour a success. "To our fans in Korea: please rest assured — D-DRIVE remain fully committed to making the rest of the tour a success. We will continue to do our utmost to deliver unforgettable matches," D-DRIVE CEO Seul Ham said in a statement. — REUTERS

Barcelona's Asian tour on ropes after Japan game cancelled

BARCELONA, July 24 — Barcelona have cancelled their Asian tour pre-season friendly against Japan's Vissel Kobe, citing unspecified 'serious contractual breaches', warning matches in South Korea could also be scrapped. The Spanish giants were due to play J-League side Vissel Kobe on Sunday before traveling to South Korea to face FC Seoul on July 31 and Daegu FC on August 4. 'Barcelona announces that it has been obliged to suspend its participation in the game scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter,' said a Barcelona statement late Wednesday. 'Barcelona regrets this incident and the impact it will have on the many, many Barca fans in Japan.' Vissel Kobe, for whom Barcelona and Spain great Andres Iniesta played at the end of his career, said in a statement Thursday that they were 'currently investigating the situation'. 'We sincerely apologise for any concern this may cause to the many fans and stakeholders who were looking forward to this match,' Kobe added. The tour promoters, Seoul-based company D-Drive, said that they were confident the matches in South Korea would be unaffected. 'All scheduled activities in South Korea will take place as planned, without any disruptions,' said a D-Drive statement, which blamed organisers in Japan for the Kobe cancellation. 'This is an issue that stems solely from the Japanese side and has no connection whatsoever with the Korea tour.' — AFP
