Virginia Tech students helping in Hurricane Helene clean-up during Spring Break
AUGUSTA (WJBF) – The Ryan Clark Scholarship is pleased to announce that students from Virginia Tech will be in Augusta the week of March 8 – 15 helping with residentsclean up debris after Hurricane Helene.
The students are on Spring Break and have graciously given up their time to help those in need.
This effort directly aligns with The Ryan Clark Scholarship's mission to honor the legacy of RyanClark through community service based scholarships.
The Ryan Clark Scholarship was founded in 2008 after the Virginia Tech Massacre on April 16, 2007, where Ryan Clark, a Lakeside High School Graduate and Graduating Senior at Virginia Tech, was killed amongst 31 other heroes.
Ms. Letitie Clark, the mother of Ryan Clark and the Founder of The Ryan Clark Scholarship andCommunity Service Award, will be visiting the worksites on Tuesday March 11th, at 9:30 amto address the student volunteers.
This volunteering also correlates with The 5th Annual Run for Ryan 5K Run/Walk at LakesideHigh School on Saturday March 15th.

Spartanburg Co. shares new Helene recovery data
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Spartanburg County Emergency Management is asking residents what the community needs to recover from Hurricane Helene. Emergency Management shared in a media release that newly updated Helene data revealed many members of the community still have a lot of unmet needs. Data from the agency revealed that, as of June 2025, more than 500 properties in Spartanburg County have still not recovered from Helene. These unmet needs can range from tree damage to shorted HVAC systems, but data further shows that a majority of community needs focus on debris assistance and home damage. A majority of people seeking aid are also over the age of 65. 'At this time, there are more unmet needs than resources,' said Emergency Management. To help address community needs, Emergency Management established a new Long Term Recovery Group that is dedicated to Helene Recovery. The group has officially partnered with the Spartanburg County Foundation, United Way and others. For anyone still requiring assistance from Hurricane Helene, Emergency Management asked that they provide information regarding their needs. Spartanburg residents can find the link to share their needs here. Emergency Management asks county members to donate or volunteer with a local non-profit, such as Rebuilding Together, Eight Days of Hope, Team Rubicon and more, if in a well enough position to assist their community. Ladybugs, you should be after this lucky charm
AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – A day for good luck charms, what do you like? 'My little girl, she loves horses, I prefer the horseshoes,' said Heather Lanier. 'Yes, if it lands on you,' Heather said. At Ladybugs Flowers and Gifts, there's no concerns about things going bad on this day. 'Absolutely, I feel lucky. I'm not afraid of Friday the 13th, I'm a ladybug,' said Shannon Pollard. Yes, lots have been written about ladybugs being a good luck symbol. Richmond County's Extension Agent understands and says they're good for the garden. 'Just really good on pests, especially aphids, because aphids will eat succulents on plants and stuff. You really like them in your garden your home gardens.' At Ladybugs they like them in the store…at least in gift versions, and the store is famous for placing one on the flowers they send out. 'The ladybug where we put the flower arrangements, it's very important to our customers. They will call back and ask for their little ladybug,' said Shannon. Ladybugs mean good luck. What would happen if you found a ladybug on a four-leaf clover under a horseshoe? 'That's super lucky. I would say that's double lucky,' said Shannon. Vandalism at Langley Pond Park causes limited availability for bathroom facilities
AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Aiken County Parks and Recreation announced the Langley Pond Park bathroom facilities will now operate under limited hours due to 'continued vandalism.' In a statement posted to the county government Facebook page on Friday, officials state the bathrooms will only be open when park staff are on site. According to the department, staff are typically on site Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and seven days a week from the Memorial Day to Labor Day season.
